History of Camping
The history of recreational camping is often traced back to Thomas Hiram Holding, a British
travelling tailor, but it was actually first popularized in the UK on the river Thames. By the 1880s large
numbers of visitors took part in the pastime, which was connected to the late Victorian craze for
pleasure boating. The early camping equipment was very heavy, so it was convenient to transport it by
boat or to use craft that converted into tents. Although Thomas Hiram Holding is often seen as the father
of modern camping in the UK, he was responsible for popularizing a different type of camping in the
early twentieth century. He experienced the activity in the wild from his youth, when he had spent much
time with his parents traveling across the American prairies. Later he embarked on a cycling and
camping tour with some friends across Ireland. His book on his Ireland experience, Cycle and Camp in
Connemara led to the formation of the first camping group in 1901, the Association of Cycle Campers,
later to become the Camping and Caravanning Club. He wrote The Campers Handbook in 1908, so that
he could share his enthusiasm for the great outdoors with the world.

Form of Camping
1. Tent Camping- The most basic and popular type of camping is of course tent camping. It involves
heading to a park, pitching a tent, and sleeping there for a few nights. You can choose to stay on a
campsite, in the woods, a beach, or anywhere else you desire.Tent camping is a great option for
those new to camping, and that want to get started without spending a lot of money. It's also good
for families with children as it creates time for bonding and learning how to work together.

2. RV or Van Camping- Camping in an RV or van combines the pleasures of getting outside and
getting close to nature, along with the accommodations of a small hotel. As many call them their
"house on wheels", they also provide a means of transport during your travels.

3. Backpacking- involves spending the day carrying all your gear and equipment on your back,
traveling through nature. Then, you sleep outside in a tent or hammock. These kinds of trips can last
anywhere from one night, to several months. This type of camping allows for a level of self-
sufficiency and the ability to spend time away from the stresses of day to day life and instead closer
to nature.

4. Survival Camping- This is the most extreme form of camping and to only be attempted by skilled
and experienced campers. Think of this as the "Bear Grylls" type of camping. The aim of this
activity is to become self-sufficient or a period of time and return alive.

5. Car Camping- is the perfect solution as you can use whatever you already have at home. Many
hatchback cars work perfect for this by folding down the seats for more room inside. Lay down a
sleeping pad or some blankets for cushioning, and you've got yourself an area to sleep.

6. Primitive Camping- Similar to backpacking, primitive camping or backcountry camping opts to

ditch standard camping reservations for remote areas without amenities such as bathrooms, running
water, or electricity. Instead you hike out to a secluded area of a state park in the opposite direction
of the traditional campground.
7. Glamping- is a glamorous kind of travel. A global trend has gained popularity quite fast. It provides
outdoor enthusiasts with an opportunity to upgrade on recreation and rest. You experience the
positive elements of camping, without sacrificing on your comfort. When glamping, you don’t have
to pitch tents, unroll sleeping bags or build fires. It can be done on villas, yachts, pods, airstreams
and tree house, among other luxurious settings.

8. Canoe camping- combines long distance travel, camping and canoeing. It is done using kayaks or
canoes. Similar to backpackers, canoe campers have to carry enough supplies to last them
throughout the duration of the camp. If you love spending time in water, water sports and nature,
then canoe camping is suitable for you. North America is one of the most popular canoe camping
destinations.

9. Reenactment Camping- utilizes the equipment and methods specific to a certain historic era. For
example, they might seek to replicate the technologies and conditions of the American Civil War,
Medieval times and the Wild West. Most reenactment campers organize these events in various
places around the world. The camping also provides a bonding opportunity.

10. Bicycle Camping- is gaining popularity quite fast. People choose bicycle camping for various
reasons. There are those who love the idea of travelling around in a bicycle while others use it for
convenience. In bicycle camping, you have the ability to camp in a hostel or a hotel, which means
that you can go wherever you want. You are not tied to a certain destination or mileage while the
economic benefits are quite appealing.

11. Winter Camping- provides you with an opportunity to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of a
pristine winter wonderland. In winter camping, you will not encounter the crowds or the bugs. With
proper planning, you will also enjoy the outdoors. You can also combine your camping with
snowboarding and backcountry skiing, giving you unlimited access to untouched snow. The most
important thing during winter camping is staying warm.

12. Work Camping- This involves blending work and camping. It involves families, singles or
couples, who work full-time or part time, mostly in related fields. Most work campers volunteer
their services to campsites in different areas. They are then rewarded or compensated with free
campsites, including utilities like water, electricity and sewer hook ups. These opportunities also
come with additional wages for maintenance. Most work camping positions are seasonal.

13. Overlanding- This is an independent adventure where you travel to remote destinations. The
journey forms the main part of the adventure. It consists of mechanized capable transport, such as
bicycles and trucks, while you spend the night camping. The journey lasts for a long period, which
can be months to years, cutting across different international boundaries.
