2.5) Data gathering

Illustration 5-20

Data gathering dialog is for users to collect map data automatically by the communication
between the teslameter and the Laptop computer. Please refer to Illustration 5-20.

There are totally 135 points in 13 planes should be measured for one map. In plane 2~ plane 12,
each plane has 12 angles (0 degree to 330 degree, 30 degree for each step); There is only 1
point to be measured for each of the Plane 1 and plane 13. B0 field at the ISO center (plane7)
should be measured twice, firstly in the beginning of taking the map and secondly in the end of
the map data gathering. Please refer to illustration 5-21 for the arrangement of the planes. The
angles are marked on the shimholders of the magnet. Also, please refer to Profile Service CD

NOTE: THE ORIENTATION SYSTEM OF GEHC MAGNET IS DIFFERENT FROM SUMITOMO

OR SHINETSU MAGNET. PLEASE REFER TO ILLUSTRATION 4-1 FOR DETAILS.

One can also change the current position of the space point manually during data gathering by

click on the right side.

There are 2 modes of auto data gathering: "auto-measure" and "auto-accept".

a. In "auto-measure" mode, the button at right-low side shows "Auto Measure".

The program will read data through COM port automatically. After every data read, it will
compare the most recent 5 data acquired, if the peak-peak value of them (in Hz) is less than
what specified in "Max" edit box, the "Accept" button is enabled. And after clicking on the
"Accept" button, the average data(of the recent 5) will be recorded down to the current map file
automatically. And the recording line will go down to the next line.
Hint: Operation Procedures:
"Auto Measure" mode usually needs 2 field engineers' cooperation. One( named A) is moving
the position of the probe, another (B) is operating the computer.

24
GE HEALTHCARE GEHC 0.2T Profile Magnet Advanced Shimming Instruction
REV 1 DIRECTION 5121592

In each point field value gathering:

A changes the position of the probe and then gives a sign to B --> B waits for read-number valid
and decide (by himself) to accept (save) the data and then gives a sign to A to change the
position of probe.

b. In "auto-accept" mode, the button at right-low side shows "Auto Accept". By click the “Auto-
measure” and “Auto-accept” bottom, you can switch between the two data recording methods.

Illustration 5-23

In this mode, after you click on the "Measure" button, the button itself will be disabled. And then
the program will compare the recent 5 data acquired from the tesla meter. A new data is
accepted and recorded automatically, once the peak-peak difference of these 5 continuous data
is less then what specified in "Max" edit box. After data is recorded to the map file, "Measure"
button is enabled again. The default value of Max is 10Hz.
Hint: Operation Procedures:
"Auto Accept" mode could be accomplished by at least 1 field engineer (named A).
In each point field value gathering:
A changes the position of the probe and click on "Measure" button --> A Waits the computer
accept the data (after valid) and then gives a beep (last for 2 seconds) to A to change the
position of probe.

2.6) Manual Data gathering

Illustration 5-24

Manual Data gathering dialog is used for recording the field value manually on the specified
points to generate a map. The field value is combined by Prefix and suffix. For example, if the
read value for teslameter is 8.5012345MHz, the prefix 8.5 could be specified as default value,
and 012345 is the only digits to be typed in. After typing, please click "Accept" key or type
“Enter” key on the keyboard to accept the data.

"Overall Warning Bound (PPM +/-)" edit box let you set the overall warning boundary for the
whole map, if field value typed in is outside of the range, a warning will alert you attention that

abnormal data is inputted. And you can click right side to change the current point and
recollect the data if you made a mistake.

"Short Term Warning Bound (PPM +/-)" edit box is similar with the above edit box, which focus
on the difference between the current field value and last, theoretically there should be no big
difference consequent data.

3.1) Mechanical Shimming

After run “mechanical shimming” command to an existing map, the program will bring out the
mechanical shimming plan in the output Window similar as the following Illustration 5-26. If the
software gives the result that either |Z1| or |Z2| is larger than 7, one should use the shimming
plan and perform the mechanical shimming physically.

Illustration 5-26
One can watch teslameter’s display value and tune the Top B0 plug and then Bottom B0 plug
until it is as same as what is in the output window, respectively.

3.2) Decompose Field

This function allows you to read the axial harmonic of the magnetic field. Only harmonics from
(0,1)~(0,12) are listed. The most important items are (0,1) and (0,2), or say Z1 and Z2.

3.3) Set Scan Shim Param...

Illustration 5-27
The dialog shown in Illustration 5-27 is used to set the parameters for the “ Scan Shim”. “ Scan
Shim” function is used to assisting service engineer to find the best Passive Shimming “ target “.
Please refer to 3.5) Passive shimming.

With Only ONE time setting here, one can execute passive shimming analysis and get a series
of simulation results simply and easily (Please refer to Illustration 5-28). The target PPM can be
from 0.01 to 100. “Shims limit” stands for the shimming chips number limitation in each socket,
and it should be less than or equal to 4. The default values are suitable to most cases. You can
also change them before run “scan passive shimming” in 3.4) to see if better result could be
generated (The better result comes from the comprehensive consideration of the
“Anticipated PPM” value and “Shims Number”. Both this two parameter should be as
small as possible).

Target PPM from 12 to 36, with delta of 0.2 and Shims Limit from 4 to 4 with delta of 1 is set as
the default value. When the best analysis results occur at the boundary, the Target PPM value
scanning range could be extended in have more analysis result around the target PPM value.
For Example: If the target is set as from 12ppm to 36ppm, while the best analysis result is just
near 12ppm, you could change the Target PPM range as from 5PPM to 14PPM and run
scanning again to see if there is an even better result could be found.

3.4) Scan passive shimming

“ Scan Shim” function is used to assisting you to find the best Passive Shimming “ target “. To
execute scanning of passive shimming with the specified target ppm and shims number limit in
each pocket, which is described in 3.4), to get the simulated shimming. A dialog, as shown in
Illustration 5-28, will appear after clicking the “scan passive shimming” command. If this is the

are the same as the introduction in 3.3)

Please specify the “Target PPM” value and “Shim Limit” value you choose from the “Scan
passive shimming” results (section 3.4). Click on “OK” button, and then the program will start to
calculate, generate the result and open the calculation results by the notepad. (For detail
information, please refer to section 4).

The string in the “Output Shim File” edit box is the name of the output shim file, which is
consistent with the name of the base map file as default ( Specified by user or assigned by the
software). The program will automatically add the anticipated inhomogeneity ppm value, target
ppm value to the file name, which has an extension of “.psm”. For example, if you type
“afterMech1” in this edit box as the file name, the target ppm is 13.6, the anticipated ppm is 22.5
after calculation, then the actually output shim file will be saved as the name
“afterMech1_22.5(13.6).psm” automatically. If one accept the result of the psm file and perform
shimming with it, please specify this name for the next iteration of passive shimming if needed.
(Please put this name in the “Shim File of Last Time”, as shown in Illustration 5-32.)
