Internal Electrical Test

Size 3 LV / HV

L1, L2 & L3 In order to carry out the next set of tests

the test leads must be placed on the +/-
DC Bus in the following steps. Set the
Multimeter to read/test a diode.

Rectifier check (L1, L2 & L3)

Visually check around the rectifier. If OK
place the black lead on the + DC Bus
point as shown and measure with the red
lead for short or open circuit connections
on L1, L2 & L3 input phases. Value
should read between 0.4 to 0.7V.

Repeat the process by putting the red

-DC lead on to the - DC Bus point and meas-
+DC ure with the black lead repeating the
above steps. Value should read between
0.4 to 0.6V.
U, V & W
Output Circuit check (U,V, & W)
Visually check the area around power
module, gate drives, etc. If OK place the
black lead on the + DC Bus point as
shown and measure with the red lead for
short or open circuit connections on U,V
and W output phases. Value should read
between 0.4 to 0.6V.

Repeat the process by putting the red

lead on to the - DC Bus point and meas-
ure with the black lead repeating the
above steps. Value should read between
-DC 0.4 to 0.6V.
+DC
Because the DC Caps are in-accessible
to measure, be aware when short-circuit
measurements are detected that the DC
caps themselves may be the causing the
fault.

SMPS Check
Look for visible signs of damage around
the SMPS where possible. Due to over
components on the board this may not be
possible.

Brake circuit Test
Size 3 LV / HV

Brake Chopper

The brake chopper circuit is a means

of dumping excess voltage on the DC
Bus.

This excess voltage can be created

when an AC motor is decelerated at
too fast a deceleration ramp time. The
motor will effectively turn into a gen-
erator and will feed a voltage back
into the drive causing the DC Bus
voltage to rise beyond its nominal
value.

To remove excess voltage the drive

can be fitted with a brake resistor and
the voltage can be dissipated in the
form of heat.

Test

As per the diagram above the brake

chopper circuit can be tested using
the following multimeter checks.

Ohms test

Set your multimeter to read Ohms and

carry out the following tests:

Black lead on + terminal/red lead on

BR terminal = 1.75M +/- 10%
BR (Brake)
Red lead on + terminal/Black lead on
BR terminal = 1.99M +/- 10%

Diode test

Set your multimeter to read diode and

carry out the following tests:

Red lead on + terminal/Black lead

on BR terminal = 0V +/- 10%

Black lead on + terminal/Red lead

+DC on BR terminal = 0.437M +/- 10%
