WHAT IS GYMNASTICS?

Gymnastics includes physical exercises requiring physical fitness components such as strength,

balance, agility, flexibility, endurance, and coordination. The movements involved in gymnastics
contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups.
Alertness, precision, daring, self-confidence, and self-discipline are mental traits that can also be
developed through gymnastics evolved from exercises used by the ancient Greeks that included skills for
mounting and dismounting a horse and from circus performance skills. Learning the basic gymnastics
may also contribute to your physical well-being when applied with discipline and consistency, such as
having a good posture and healthy bones and muscles that you will be needing in your future career.

THE PHASES OF THE GYMNASTICS PROGRAM

1. Conditioning Program

This exercise aims to prepare the body for more complicated movements and skills. This phase is also
considered as “Calisthenics” wherein routines can also be made out of the exercises in the conditioning
program.

2. Rhythmic Gymnastics

These are routines or exercises accompanied with music .They are performed in a rhythmical manner
and included free hand exercise or with the use of light apparatuses such as wands, rings, hoops,
dumbbells, ropes, or ribbons. Gymnastics skills such as, stunts and tumbling skills are combined with
dance skills to form a routine on the floor. This is where the performer can create and develop her own
routine according to her abilities.
3. Stunts

These are activities in form of play to test one’s strength, flexibility, balance, agility, endurance and
coordination. These may be considered also as conditioning exercises, because some of the stunts may
be used as preparations to tumbling skills.

4. Tumbling

Considered to be most important phase of the gymnastics, wherein the performer’s ability is tested as
he/she rolls, twists, turns, and springs on the floor, and in the air.

5. Apparatus Exercise (Heavy)

Exercises that were done with the use Heavy apparatuses such as, the vaulting horse, balance beam,
uneven bars, parallel bars, trampolines and rings.

6. Pyramid Building

This phase is about making a properly arranged pyramid-like shapes or mural out of body static
positions.

Johann Guts Muths- was called the “great grandfather of gymnastics”. He authored a book entitled
Gymnastics for the Youth. He invented the apparatuses for outdoor gymnastics such as the climbing
rope, balancing beam, the vault apparatus, and the rope ladder in 1759.

Freidrich Jahn- was considered the “Father of Gymnastics”. He introduced the horizontal bar, the
parallel bar, the side horse, and the vaulting buck in 1778.

Adolf Spiess- He introduced the use of music during march and free hand exercise in 1810.

Perh Ling- a Swedish enthusiast, who invented stall bars and the vaulting box or Swedish box in 1776.
