INTRODUCTION
• The term folded structure defines a folded form of construction,
including structures made of plates and structures made of
sticks which make a folded form by their mutual relationship in
space.
• The basic idea of creating this type of construction is striving to
achieve more constructive height and greater rigidity and
reduce the net weight of the structural element.
• The strength and stiffness of folded construction is achieved
primarily by proper design of the structure, and to a lesser
extent, by thickness and dimension of the elements that form it.
• Engineer Eudene Freyssinet performed the first roof with the
folded structure in 1923as an aircraft hangar at Orly Airport in
Paris.
• Folded structures are spatial structures formed by the elements
in the plane, different in form and materialization.

INTRODUCTION
• Folded structures differ in geometric form, the form of a base over which they are performed, the manner of
performance, methods of forming stiffness, function and position in the building, and the material they are
made of.
• By using folded structures different spatial forms can be made.
• The straight elements forming a folded construction can be of various shapes: rectangular, trapezoidal or
triangular.
• By combining these elements, we get different forms resulting in a variety of shapes and remarkable
architectural expression.

STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR FOLDED PLATE STRUCTURE
• The folded structures are aligned in a uniform zig zag form. The loads that are
coming on the structure is transferred to the shorter side of the single
element. The resulted axial force is divided between the adjacent elements.
Traverse Bending in Folded Plates - Slab
• This is then transferred to the bearings. Hence, the traverse loads coming on Action
the structure is resisted using plate and slab action.
• Here, the load results in traverse bending of the folded plate elements, and
bending moment is maximum at the centre of the folded plate slab.
• The loads that acts normal to each plate results in traverse bending between
Longitudinal Bending of Plates- Plate
the junction of the plates. This is called as slab action. The longitudinal Action

bending of the plates in their own plane is called as "Plate Action".

• Bending in folded plate structures cause the top portion to be in
compression and bottom in tension.
• The folded plates can get flattened under gravity load, which can be
prevented using frames or walls. There are chances for end buckling which
can be resisted using edge beams.

BASIC ELEMENTS OF FOLDED PLATES
Basic Elements of Folded Plates:
• The Inclined Plates.
• Edge plates which must be used to stiffen the wide plates.
• Stiffeners to carry the loads to the supports and to hold the plates in line.
• Columns to support the structure in the air.

The Principle of Folding

The structural characteristics of folding structures depend on:
• The pattern of the folding.
• Their geometrical basic shape and Its material.
• The connection of the different folding planes.
• The design of the bearings.
• Movable form work can be employed.
• Form work required is relatively simpler.
• Design involves simpler calculations.
• The Concept of Stiffness Generation.

BASED ON GEOMETRIC SHAPE FOLDED
STRUCTURES CAN BE
It is divided into
1. Folded plate surfaces:
Folded structures in the plane are the structures in which all the
highest points of the elements and all the elements of the
lowest points of the folded structure belong to two parallel
planes.
2. Folded plate frames:
Frame folded structures represent constructional set in which
the elements of each segment of the folds mutually occupies a
frame spatial form. This type of folded structure is spatial
organization of two or more folds in the plane.
3. Spatial folded plate structures:
Spatial folded structures are the type of a structure in which a
spatial constructive set is formed by combining.

BASED ON GEOMETRIC SHAPE FOLDED
STRUCTURES CAN BE
• The shape of folded structures affects the transmission of load
and direction of relying of folded structures.
• Based on these parameters we can do the division in:
➢ Linear folded plate structure.
➢ Radial folded plate structure.
➢ Spatial folded plate structure.
• Combined folded constructions are carried out over the
complex geometric basis, formed by the combination of simple
geometric figures, rectangles and semicircles on one side or
both sides.
• This type of folded structure can be derived in the plane or as a
frame (cylindrical) structure, and represents a combination of
folded structure above the rectangular base and ½ of the
radial construction.

APPLICATIONS
• Folded structures have found the application in architectural buildings and engineering structures.
• Based on the position in the architectural structure, this type of construction can be divided into Roof, Floor &
Wall folded constructions. In engineering structures, bridges and retaining walls, various structural elements can
be constructed on the principle of folded structures.
• The principle of greater stiffness of individual constructive element, by the introduction of folded form, has found
application in many consumer products. The largest number of examples of folded structures are roof structures.
The need for acquiring the larger range and more cost-effective structure led to the emergence of this type of
structure.

ADVANTAGES OF FOLDED PLATE STRUCTURES

Folded plate structures very light form of construction up to span 30 m, shell thickness required is 60 mm only.
1. These types of structures reduce both materials and construction costs.
2. It has a longer span that can be provided.
3. Also, has flat shapes by choosing certain arched shapes.
4. It provides better esthetical as compare to other forms of construction.
