Lesson Plan Title: Countries of Our World Research Project

Grade Level: 5th


Teaching Objective:
Teach students about the plentiful and diverse cultures that thrive within our world.

Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes:


• Increase students’ knowledge of certain computer software. I.E. PowerPoint, Search
Engines, etc.
• Strengthen students’ ability to research own information and share findings with teacher
and classmates.
• Strengthen students’ ability to give an oral report in front of a group of people
• Expand their knowledge on our world and the people of it

Required Materials:
• Computer
• Microsoft Office PowerPoint
• Google Docs
• Google Chrome or other search engines

In-Class Gameplan:
1. Present lesson plan to students and give a refresher lesson on PowerPoint software.
2. All students to pick a country out of a bowl. Students will complete the project based on
the country they randomly chose.
3. Give students sanctioned time to use the computer lab in designated groups for more
efficient use of time.
4. Students will then be directed to open Google Chrome and begin researching the state
they were assigned. Students should find a minimum of 2 sources.
5. Students will then fill out the Countries of Our World Activity Worksheet
6. Once the student has read and selected trustworthy sources, they are to open a Google
Doc and title it “Notes on ______” The blank is where students will input their country
name.
7. Students will re-read their sources and copy down any information they feel is important
into their Google Doc.
1. Please note: The information in this Google Doc should be appropriate
information that the student is comfortable sharing with the class.
8. Once the student has created 20 bullet points of information on their Google Doc, they
will be required to choose a PowerPoint template and input their information into the
PowerPoint.
9. After the student has input all information into the PowerPoint, they can then read
through the PowerPoint again and ensure they are pleased with the outcome, whether it
be format, look, etc.

Independent Instructions:
1. Students will be given 1 week to practice presenting their PowerPoint at home
1. Get creative with your presentations! Students are encouraged to bring food from
their country or wear clothes common to that country. While these things are not
mandatory, they are encouraged as means to make the project more fun.
2. After one week, students will bring their PowerPoints back to school and present them to
their classmates
3. Students can use notecards as a script for their PowerPoint, but all bullet points on the
PowerPoint are to be used as reference points

PowerPoint Requirements:
• A minimum of 20 bullet points and 5 slides
• Use a minimum of 2 sources
• All information should be in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font
• Section titles can be in any font
• A minimum of 2 pictures that are related to their country
• Bullet Points should be in incomplete sentences; they are only to be used as a reference point for
the presenter, not a script
• Presentation should be at least 3 minutes

Assessment Plan:
• Students will present their PowerPoint while the teacher grades based on the
requirements previously given along with the rubric. Points will be given or taken based
on what the rubric describes.
• Students will be timed as they present, so please practice accordingly
• The Activity Worksheet will not be for a grade, it is just to help students organize their
notes

Special Needs Accommodation:


• For students with clinical anxiety, motor disabilities, etc. only the submission of a
PowerPoint will be required. Students with these special circumstances will not be
required to present in front of the class.
