The culture that this work was created in was Spanish Colonial. One way that the Angel
with Arquebus demonstrates continuity visually with local European tradition is that it
was created with oil paint, specifically on a canvas, which was extremely common and
increasingly popular at this time in Europe. The work was also likely based off of other
European works with secular military images, and this shows continuity because the
Arquebus had been previously shown to the indigenous people by the European
people. The contextual reasoning for this continuity is due to the Spanish conquering
the indigenous regions, which caused the Spanish images, symbols, and religion to
influence the indigenous culture.
This work also shows change in its visual and contextual elements. Visually, the angel
is wearing clothes of a noble from South America, from the Andes, rather than clothes
typically worn by Europeans. By wearing clothes that related more to the indigenous
style, the piece felt more familiar and common to the indigenous people and helped
make the religion of Christianity more appealing to them. Contextually, before the
Europeans arrived in the indigenous regions, the indigenous people typically used
anthropomorphism in their symbols and images, so this change was added to this
European work as a way to again make Christianity more accepted and familiar to the
indigenous people.
