섬을 근거지로 연매출 1억 달러에 달하는 조선기업을 일궈낸 한국인이 있다. ‘트리카랴 알람’ 그룹
회장 박동희. 그는 가난한 집안에서 태어나 가족의 생계를 책임지기 위해 인도네시아에 정착했다.
처음 무허가 판자촌에서 거주한 그는 농사와 택시 임대업, 자동차 정비소를 운영하며 온갖
어려움을 극복하면서 기업을 일으켰다. 정착하는 것도 힘든 먼 타국에서 연매출 1억 달러의 조선
신화를 쓸 수 있게 한 그의 힘은 무엇일까. 2012년 한국언론인연합회가 선정한 제12회
자랑스런한국인대상(글로벌경영부문)을 수상한 그만이 가지고 있는 근원은 어떤 것일지 궁금했다.
인터뷰를 통해 필자가 박동희 회장에게서 발견한 넘보기 어려운 불굴의 의지와 도전정신을
싣는다.

There is a Korean who developed a shipbuilding company recording annual sales of $100
million with its base on Batam Island, which is emerging as the growth engine of Indonesia
and being called as the second Singapore. He is David Dong Huei Bak, CEO and Chairman
of Trikarya Alam Group. Born into a poor family, he settled in Indonesia to make a living for
his family. Having first lived in an unlicensed shack, he had farmed, ran a taxi leasing
service, and managed an auto repair shop, overcoming all kinds of difficulties until finally
founding the company. This was all possible due to his endless, challenging spirit. Let us
meet CEO and Chairman David Dong Huei Bak, who proudly achieved great success in the
shipbuilding industry in a foreign land by recording annual sales of $100 million or more and
the proud recipient of the 12th Annual Proud Korean Awards (Global Business Sector)
selected by the Journalists Federation of Korea in 2012.

지난해 12월 4일 오전 서울 63빌딩에서 한국언론인연합회가 주최한 제12회

‘자랑스런한국인대상’ 시상식이 있었다. 시상식에는 총 13명의 수상자들과 내외빈이 참석했다.
수상자들은 각 부문별로 한 해 동안 대한민국을 빛낸 인물들이다. 이름만 봐도 잘 아는 이들이
눈에 띄었다. 매경미디어그룹 장대환 회장, 아시아 최초 한국계 세계은행 김용 총재, 전 세계에
‘말춤’ 열풍을 일으킨 가수 싸이, 전 런던올림픽 축구대표팀 홍명보 감독 등.
생소한 이름도 눈에 띄었다. ‘트리카랴 알람’ 그룹의 박동희 회장. 트리카랴 알람? 무슨 뜻일까.
글로벌경영부문 수상자인 그가 사업가라는 정도만 알아챌 수 있었다. 그리고 자그마한 체구지만
다부진 눈매에 시상대에 오르는 그를 보고 한순간 궁금증이 일었다.

In the morning of December 4th, there was the ‘Proud Korean Awards’ ceremony held by
the Journalists Federation of Korea at the 63 Building in Seoul. Thirteen honorees
participated in the ceremony. They are people who enhanced national prestige of Korea for
a year in each sector. Many of their names were of people who can easily be recognized:
Chang Dae-hwan, president of the Maeil Business Newspaper; Kim Yong, Korean-
American and Asia’s first president of the World Bank; Psy, singer who created the craze
of the Gangnam Style horseplay all over the world; and Hong Myung-bo, former national
soccer team coach in the 2012 London Olympics.
There was a name unfamiliar to us as well: David Dong Huei Bak, CEO and Chairman of
Trikarya Alam Group. Trikarya Alam Group? What do they do? Being a winner in the Global
Business Sector, it could only be assumed that he was a businessman. As I saw him
approaching the podium with his slender build offset with tough eyes, my curiosity was
aroused instantly.

말라카 해협의 조선산업 왕

박동희 회장은 일찌감치 해외로 눈을 돌려 사업에 열정을 바친 이른바 ‘성공한 사업가’이다.
그는 경남 김해 빈농 가정의 7남매 중 장남으로 태어났다. 가난하여 공부도 제대로 할 수 없어
야간 고등학교를 졸업한 그는 일찍이 생활전선에 뛰어들었다. 고등학교를 졸업한 후 가난을
극복하기 위해 한국 원양어업 직업훈련소에서 통신 전문과정을 마치고 외양선을 탄 것이 계기가
되어 인도네시아로 떠났다.
그는 27세부터 전 세계를 누비며 선박 통신 책임자로 근무했다.
독일•프랑스•앙골라•남아공•호주•필리핀 등 안 가본 곳이 없을 정도다. 돈을 벌어 한국에서
철공소를 차리겠다는 꿈도 있었지만 가족들을 돌보느라 돈을 모을 여유조차 없었다. 결국 그는
34세가 되던 해에 인도네시아에 정착하여 꿈을 키웠다.
싱가포르와 마주 보는 경제특구인 인도네시아 바탐 섬에서 박 회장은 바탐의 가능성을 보고
여기저기서 종잣돈을 모아 1993년 선박수리 조선소를 세웠다. 그는 현지인들에게 용접기술을
일일이 가르치며 조선소를 운영했고 철저한 시간약속과 품질을 목숨처럼 지켜 선주들의 인정을
받았다.
그곳에서 현지인 아내를 만나 가정을 꾸리고 5남매를 키웠다. 어려서부터 가난하게 성장했지만
돈을 벌었다고 해서 함부로 낭비하는 법은 없었다. 검소하게 살면서도 지난날 자신이 겪었던
가난의 상처를 생각하며 현지 아이들을 위해서 학교를 세우고, 지역주민을 위한 문화센터도
설립하였다. 그리고 현장 근로자의 목소리에 귀를 기울이고 그들의 애로가 무엇인지 알려고
하였고 또 해결하였다. 빈손으로 인도네시아에 정착해 연매출 1억 달러를 달성하기까지 그는
그야말로 정글 같은 삶을 살아왔다.

farmer in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do. He was so poor that he could not afford to pursue
higher avenues of education, forcing him to only graduate from high school and entering
the battle of life early to earn a living.
To overcome poverty after graduating from high school, he completed a communications
course at Korea Deep Sea Fisheries vocational training center, after which, he headed to
Indonesia by way of an ocean liner.
He worked as chief wireless operator of ships all over the world since he was 27 years old.
There’s not a place in the world he hasn’t been, as his position required him to travel to
many locations such as Germany, France, Angola, South Africa, Australia and the
Philippines. He had a dream of earning money to establish an iron works in Korea, but he
could not afford to even save money as he had to take care of his family. Finally, the year
he turned 34, he settled in Indonesia to develop his dream.
In Batam Island of Indonesia, which is a special economic zone facing Singapore, Bak saw
the potential for Batam; he gathered seed money from various places and established a
shipyard for the purpose of repairing vessels in 1993. In operating the shipyard, he taught
welding techniques to local employees one by one, and made himself as a person of great
note to shipowners due to his constant punctuality and quality of work.
There he met and married a native woman, creating a family of his own raising five sons
and daughters. He had grown up poor since childhood, but he never wasted his money
even if he earned it. As he lived frugally, he reflected on the wounds of poverty he had felt
before, which led him to establish a school for local children and a cultural center for local
residents. Also, he always tried to listen to the voices of the workers on site, and helped
resolve any problems or difficulties they faced.
From the day he settled in Indonesia with empty hands to the day he achieved the annual
sales of $100 million, his lifestyle still reflects that of a poor farmer’s child living in the
country; humble and modest.. (I think this is a better comparison seeing as it goes back to
his childhood of growing up poor in the countryside).

주기 위해 지금 이 시간에도 갖은 노력을 다하고 있는 트리카랴 알람 그룹 임직원들. 트리카랴
알람은 현재 한국인 임원 3명을 제외한 1000여 명 전원이 인도네시아인일 정도로 현지화가 잘
되어 있다. 박 회장은 “어려운 환경을 이겨내고 지금의 자리까지 올라왔다. 절대 좌절하지 않고
도전하며, 자신감과 확신으로 위기를 극복해나갈 것이다”라고 말했다. 호랑이 밑에 고양이
새끼가 나올 수는 없는 법이다. 트리카랴 알람 그룹은 글로벌 조선소로 도약하기 위해 오늘도
멀리 뛰고 있다.
트리카랴 알람 그룹은 선박건조 및 수리 전문 종합 전문기업으로 세계시장에서 고른 수주
분포도를 보이고 있다. 선박건조 기술과 수리기술 만큼은 까다롭기로 유명한 선박 전문가들조차
한목소리로 인정하고 있다. 박 회장은 지금의 세계 경제위기를 더 좋은 투자기회로 활용하여
금명간 대형 도크가 달린 제3조선소 건설에 박차를 가해 향후 군용선 건조, LNG선, 초대형
컨테이너선, 초호화 유람선(크루즈선), 오프쇼어(offshore)라 불리는 고정식 해양플랫폼, FPSO,
TLP, 부유식 해상구조물 등 해양개발 설비에도 진출할 것으로 알려지고 있다.

Toward a Global Shipyard

Trikarya Alam Group. It is a unique name. It means convergence of the Trinity in the local
language. “It refers to ‘owner, employee, and customer.’ The top priority in operating the
shipyard is to create an impression on customers. Trikarya Alam Group is the name I
thought up to remind myself of that,” said Bak. He emphasizes the need to be an
employee who always creates an impression. Trikarya Alam Group employees are putting
forth their best efforts to provide satisfaction and to create an impression. Trikarya Alam
Group is localized with all 1000 or so employees, with an exception of three Korean
executives, being Indonesians. “I overcame a great deal of difficulty to come up to this
point. I will never be frustrated and will keep on challenging myself, overcoming crises with
confidence and assurance,” said Bak. A tiger can never give birth to a kitten. The Trikarya
Alam Group is currently leaping to become a global shipyard.
Trikarya Alam Group is an integrated corporation specialized in shipbuilding and repair,
showing even distribution of orders in the global market. Specialists notorious for being
particular all approve the shipbuilding and repairing technologies of the Trikarya Alam
Group. Bak is using the current global economic crisis as a good investment opportunity,
accelerating the construction of Shipyard 3 with a large dock. In the future, the company
will enter the market of ocean development facilities such as building ships for military
purposes, LNG carriers, large container ships, luxury cruise ships, stationary ocean
platforms called offshore platforms, FPSO, TLP, and floating structures.

삶의 버팀목이 되어준 가족
부모님, 삼촌, 형제, 친구들의 반대를 무릅쓰고 떠나온 박 회장은 앞만 보고 혼자 달렸다. 하지만
언제까지나 혼자일 수는 없었다. 현지에서 만난 그의 아내는 그에게 안식처가 되어주었다. 아내
나오미는 정글에서 농사로 생계를 꾸려가며 원시적 생활을 하고 있던 12세 연하의 여인이었다.
박 회장은 정글에서 신발도 없이 지붕도 없는 집에서 살던 여인에게 한국인의 얼을 심어주려
교육시키고 영혼을 다듬듯이 해서 자신의 충족한 아내로 만들려고 애를 썼다.
속 모르는 남들은 농촌 청년이 여자가 없어서 저런 여자와 사는 거라고 색안경을 쓰고 봐도 그는
아랑곳하지 않았다. 어쨌든 그의 자식을 낳고 살아온 소중한 아내였기 때문이다.
아내와의 슬하에 1남4녀를 두었다. 큰딸 지영이, 아들 지호, 둘째 딸 소정이, 소영이, 지은이
다섯 명이다. 인도네시아 혼혈인 아이들은 엄마와 말이 더 잘 통할 수밖에 없었다. 박 회장은
때로는 외톨이처럼 외로움을 느낄 때도 있을 정도로 그들의 대화 속에서 분리된 기분이 들었다.
그래서 아이들에게 한국말을 가르치기 시작했다. 통신장을 오래 한 박 회장은 고막이 약해져서
보청기 신세를 져야 할 정도이다. 그에게는 아내 나오미와 아이들, 일꾼들조차도 모두 온통
교육의 대상이었다.
사람을 만들어야겠다고 생각하고 ‘알아야 한다!’ ‘하면 된다!’를 심어주었다. 자연히 그는
냉철하고 교육하고 꾸지람하는 엄격한 사람으로 각인되어 호랑이 아빠로 평이 나 있다. 그러나
여자보다도 마음이 여리고 정이 많고 감성적인 박 회장의 마음을 따뜻하게 어루만져줄 이는
아무도 존재하지 않았다. 아내가 있어도 속내를 알아주지 못했고 벌어진 현실에서 강인한
정글의 사나이가 된 것이다. 또 한국 사람으로서의 자부심과 애국심이 남다르게 강했다. 30년이
지난 지금도 대한민국 국적을 포기하지 않은 채 아이들을 모두 한국 국적에 올려놓았다.

forever. His wife, whom he met in Indonesia, has always been a haven for him. Twelve
years younger, Naomi was a woman who had been living a primitive life of farming in a
jungle. Bak had lived in the jungle without shoes in a roofless house, educating her to
impart the Korean spirit and to refine a soul to turn her into his wife.
Some would look at him with judging eyes, criticizing his choice for a companion and
explaining that the only reason he was living with her was because he couldn’t meet
anyone else. Despite all of the harsh criticism and judgment, he didn’t care because she
was his wife and they would start a family together.
Bak had a son and four daughters with his wife: the eldest daughter Ji-young, son Ji-ho,
second daughter So-jyung, and So-young and Ji-eun. Being of mixed ethnicity, the
children communicated more comfortably with their mother. Bak sometimes felt left out
from their conversations. That was why he began to teach them Korean. Having been a
longtime chief wireless operator, Bak’s eardrums became weak, forcing him to wear a
hearing aid. For him, his wife Naomi, his children, and even his workers were all targets for
education.
Bak thought he should make new people of them, instilling them with ideas that they must
know and a ‘can do’ attitude. Naturally he was imprinted as a level-headed, strict educator
and father. He was actually more tenderhearted, warm and emotional than a woman, but
no one could soothe him. Even his wife did not fully understand what he had in his heart;
thus, he has become a tough man of the jungle in reality. Also, he had a strong sense of
pride and patriotism as a Korean. He did not give up his Korean nationality even after 30
years, and registered all his children as Koreans as well.

대한민국 조선산업에
신화처럼 내려오는 일대기가 있다. 고 정주영 회장이 1972년 현대중공업을 창업할 당시
이야기다. 거북선이 그려진 지폐와 조선소를 지을 모래사장 사진 한 장만으로 26만 톤급 초대형
유조선 2척을 수주했고 1억 달러의 자금을 만들어냈다. 조선소를 건설하기도 전의 일이었다.
박동희 회장은 ‘인도네시아의 정주영’이라 말할 수 있다. 박 회장은 세상에 안 되는 것은 없다고
생각한다. 골프 또한 배운 적이 없으나 독학으로 싱글까지 치고 있는 그는 유달리 승부욕이 강한
사람이다. 해외 조선업의 거인이 되기까지 역경을 이겨낼 수 있었던 그의 신조는 바로 ‘끊임없는
도전과 오기’이다. “고통에서도 이겨낼 수 있는 한국인 특유의 불굴의 도전정신이 오늘의
성공신화를 이룩했다고 말하고 싶다.”
조선소 창업 당시 그는 온갖 어려움을 겪어야 했다. 기계 작동을 잘 못한 직원이 다리가
잘려나가 수습하던 과정들, 짧은 시간에 배 수리를 완성해야 하는데 일꾼이 없었을 때의 난감함
속에서도 몸이 부서질 정도로 잠 못 자고 완성했던 일, 기름 투성이에 온갖 쓰레기 더미인
열대지방의 케케묵은 배 지하실에서 플래시를 밝히면서 일꾼도 제대로 없이 수리하던 때가
있었다.
어려서부터 잘 먹고 튼튼히 자라온 체격도 아니어서 정신력과 깡다구로 모든 걸 이겨냈다. 늘
잠이 모자란 탓에 허다한 S자 졸음운전으로 죽을 수밖에 없는 순간들도 많았고 떼강도를 만나
목에 칼이 들어온 순간들도 겪었으나 모두 하나님이 지켜주신 덕이라고 말한다. 늘 자신보다
남을 배려하는 습관이 몸에 밴 박동희 회장은 희생을 그의 행복으로 여기고 지금도 늘 바쁘게
무언가 생각하고 도전하느라 하루 한 끼로 때울 때가 많다.
그는 세계인에게 메이드 인 코리아 제품을 판다는 각오로 일했다고 말한다. 바탐에서
조선산업으로 성공한 박 회장은 이제 바탐을 넘어 까리문 섬에 4억 달러를 투자해 10만 톤급
이상의 배를 건조할 수 있는 인도네시아 최대 규모의 조선소를 건립하고 있다. 항상 현재에
머물지 않고 새로운 도전을 하고 있는 박 회장은 이 세 번째 조선소가 완공되면 인도네시아 최대
조선소가 되는 것이라고 말했다.
박 회장은 인도네시아 현지에서 봉사활동하며 솔선수범하는 걸로도 잘 알려져 있다. 바탐 섬
현지는 아직 그리 잘사는 곳은 아니어서 우리가 흔히 말하는 불우이웃도 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다.
그들을 위한 이웃돕기 활동을 우선적으로 하고 있으며, 심장병 어린이 돕기, 나환자 돕기, 각종
재해 이재민 돕기 및 현지인 장학사업도 정기적으로 이어오고 있다.
박 회장은 뿐만 아니라 인도네시아 중앙한인회 부회장, 월드 옥타 인도네시아 부회장,
한국자유총연맹 인도네시아지부 회장을 역임하며, 교민사회 협력과 발전에 이바지하고 있다.
최근에는 전국체전 인도네시아 선수단장으로 100명의 선수단을 이끌고 한국을 방문하여 좋은
성적을 올린 바도 있다.
그의 마지막 완성의 꿈이 이루어질 때까지 그는 끊임없는 도전을 하고 있다. 인생 60부터의
새로운 계획은 젊은 날에 못 다 이룬 꿈을 조국에서 멋지게 펼쳐보이는 것이다. 박동희 회장은
“앞으로도 열심히 한다면 2013년 새해에는 한국•인도네시아 수교 40주년을 맞아 양국 간
민간외교 역할도 톡톡히 해낼 것으로 기대해봐도 되지 않을까 싶다”라고 말했다. 노후 인생을
자신이 태어난 대한민국에서 마무리하겠다는 신념 하나로 그는 오늘도 끊임없는 도전을
계속하며 남다른 애국자로 귀감이 되고 있다.

There is a story that is passed down in the Korean shipbuilding industry. It is the story of
the late Chung Ju-yung and his founding of Hyundai Heavy Industries in 1972. He had
obtained orders of 2,000 supertankers with 260,000 ton capacity with only 500 KRW at that
time and a single photo of the plot of shoreline on which to build the shipyard, and raised
funds of $100 million. That was even before he began to build the shipyard.
David Dong Huei Bak can be referred to as the ‘Chung Ju-yung of Indonesia’. He thinks
there is nothing impossible in this world. He particularly has a high competitive spirit,
teaching himself golf when he had never learned it before and is now at the level of a
scratch golfer or better. (.There is such thing as singles in golf and there is no way to hit
singles as there are 18 holes, which means he would hole in one every shot, which is
impossible, haha. A scratch golfer is a player who can hit par on every hole so I went with
that as it’s something that most people can’t achieve even after years of practice.)
His motto, which helped him overcome adversity to become a giant of the overseas
shipbuilding industry, is ‘endless challenge and tenacity’. “Korean’s typical indomitable,
challenging spirit that can overcome all pains led me to achieve today’s success.”
He had all kinds of trouble when establishing the shipyard. There was a time when an
employee who made a mistake in operating a machine had his leg severed; when he had
to complete a ship repair within a short period of time, unable to sleep and working
frantically under the obstinate issue of the shortage of workers; and when he had to work
in the basement of an ancient ship in a tropical region, repairing it without properly trained
workers and dealing with all kinds of trash heaps to dispose of equipped with just a
flashlight.
As Bak had not been well fed and strongly built since childhood, he had to endure lack of
sleep with willpower and tenacity, which almost got him killed many times for dozing off
while driving. He also faced groups of robbers who held a knife to his throat and almost
killed him. But he said he was protected by God. With a habit of being considerate to
others, he considers the act of sacrifice as his happiness. He is still busy, always thinking
and challenging the present to the point that he barely has time to eat one meal a day.
Bak says he has worked with determination to sell Korean made products to the world.
Having succeeded in the shipbuilding business in Batam, he is now investing $400 million
in Karimun to establish the largest shipyard in Indonesia, which will be capable of building
ships with over 100,00 ton load capacities. Bak, always having new challenges and not
settling for the present, stated that this third shipyard will be the biggest shipyard in
Indonesia.
Bak is also well known for volunteer work in Indonesia. Batam Island is still not an

Bak is conducting activities to help them, and is also regularly organizing campaigns to
help children with heart disease, lepresy, and victims of various disasters as well as
providing funding for education for local residents.
Moreover, Bak is successively holding various posts such as Vice President of Indonesia’s
Central Association of Korean Residents, Vice President of World-OKTA Indonesia, and
President of Korea Freedom Federation’s Indonesian branch, contributing to the
cooperation and development of Korean residents in Indonesia. Recently, he visited Korea
with a team of 100 athletes as the head of the Indonesian team for the National Sports
Festival and achieved good results.
David Dong Huei Bak is constantly challenging himself until his ultimate dream comes to
fruition. His new plan after turning 60 is to pursue the unrealized dream of his youth in his
homeland. “If I work hard, I think I can play the role of the non-governmental diplomat
between the two countries in 2013, in celebration of the 40 year anniversary of Korea-
Indonesia amity,” said Bak. With a strong conviction to spend the later years of his life in
his home country of South Korea, he is endlessly challenging himself as a paragon of
extraordinary patriotism.
