LEARNING TASK/ACTIVITIES 2.1

Look around you. Observe any physical or chemical changes that are happening. List out as many as you
can and see if they can be identified as either endothermic or exothermic.

1.
PHYSICAL CHANGE OR ENDOTHERMIC OR
CHEMICAL CHANGE EXOTHERMIC
1. Burning wood Chemical change Exothermic

2. Metabolism Chemical change Exothermic

3. Molding banana Chemical change Endothermic

4. Cooking an egg Chemical change Endothermic

5. Boiling water Physical change Endothermic

6. Chopping wood Physical change Exothermic

7. Shredding paper Physical change Exothermic

8. Melting an ice cube Physical change Endothermic

9. Mixing green and blue marbles Physical change Exothermic

10. Fireworks Chemical change Exothermic

Vision: A globally competitive university for science, technology, and environmental conservation.
Mission: Development of a highly competitive human resource, cutting-edge scientific knowledge
and innovative technologies for sustainable communities and environment.
ASSESSMENT 2.1

Solve the following problems below. Provide your solutions. Printed or handwritten outputs are accepted as
long as it is in a short bond paper. Additional instructions are provided below.

1. A sample of liquid acetone weighing 0.700g was burned in a bomb calorimeter for which the heat
capacity (including the sample) is 6937 JK-1. The observed temperature rise was from 25.00°C to 26.69°C.
Calculate ∆E for the combustion of 1 mol of acetone.

2. The bacterium Acetobacter suboxydans obtains energy for growth by oxidizing ethanol in two stages, as
follows:
a. C2H5OH(l) + ½ O2(g) CH3CHO(l) + H2O(l)
b. CH3CHO(l) + ½ O2(g) CH3COOH(l)

The enthalpy increases in the complete combustion of the three compounds are:

Ethanol (C2H5OH) = -1370.7 kJ/mol

Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) = -1167.3 kJ/mol
Acetic acid (CH3COOH) = -876.1kJ/mol
Calculate the ∆Hrxn ° of the reactions a and b.
