Activity No. 9

PREPARING A CHEMICAL SOLUTION

I. INTRODUCTION:
Most regents in laboratory are in a solution form and need to be prepared
beforehand. The appropriate methods of preparation of concentration must be as
accurate as possible. Molarity (M) is a common unit of solution concentration and is
also known as the moles of a solute per liters of a solution.
II. OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this activity is to perform the appropriate technique in preparing a
chemical solution.
III. MATERIALS:
The material used in this activity are sodium chloride, water, balance, and scoop.
IV. PROCEDURE:
1. Observe laboratory safety measures.
2. Wear a laboratory attire.
3. Compute for the amount of the needed powder of sodium chloride.
4. Prepare 500 mL of 0.25 M sodium chloride solution.
5. Measure the mass of the solid.
6. Transfer to the volumetric flask.
7. Add the exact amount of water until it fills the 500 mL container.
8. Dissolve.
V. DATA/OBSERVATIONS
The 500 mL solution of sodium chloride was prepared with pure solid and place
in a flask. It has a known mass of 58.43 g/mole and 0.25 M per liter. The water was
added until the solution is 500 mL. Since the molarity is 0.25M per liter it was multiple
to .500 L and the product is 0.125 mole of sodium chloride (NaCI). In computing the
molar mass, the mass and mole of the concentration is multiplied.
M= 0.125 mole x 58.43 g/mole= 7.304 g NaCI
VI. DISCUSSION:
The activity was all about preparing a chemical solution which is sodium chloride
in this lab, especially on computing for amount of the powder which is in gram. The
concentration needed for the sodium chloride powder to a 500 mL solution is 0.125
mole of sodium. At first the molar mass of NaCl was calculated first then it was
computed on to how much it is needed in a 500 mL solution. Preparing chemical
solution is a major aspect to lean for it affects a lot the whole study and if not taking
seriously might alter the result. The technique is that concentration should be known
well for it state for the whole study. The result is significant for it explains well how it
was done and how well it is useful in such activity. Aside from the preparation of
chemicals this as activity also tackles on the safety upon conducting the activity. In
getting the exact amount of the powder it was rest assured that even a little was
poured and was not spilled out as well as the water, if ever there were errors it was just
human errors such as looking at the meniscus but above all it was assured exact and
well done.
VII. CONCLUSION:
From this activity the goal was to know the technique in preparing chemical
solutions and the students can say that they had successfully learn the said technique
upon watching and conducting the activity. Therefore the activity is essential for a
larger experiment for the reason that the preparation is a major step to consider. From
this we had concluded that the concentration of a 500 mL solution it requires a 0.125
mole of sodium chloride.
