Direction: Answer the following questions based on the movie “Coach Carter”

1. Did you learn anything from this movie? If you did, what was it?
Yes, what I’ve learned from this movie, is first I saw Coach Carter’s passion to change the lives of his
players that no matter what happened, even he is persecuted the way he handled them what he thinks and goals
are it’s not just about winning the game in the court but also winning the battle outside the game. His
perseverance teaches us to become a better educator, to be disciplined so you will successfully discipline your
students, respect is the most significant to have unity in a group, and he always ask his player “what is your
greatest fear” meaning we have to face our fear in order to win and most especially always think that whenever
we are already in the court the victory is ours.

2. What is the message of this movie? Do you agree or disagree with it?
I strongly agree. Whatever how worst our lives right now it can be change because there’s no permanent
situation. In the movie Coach Carter willingness to help his players to have a victory life through discipline, to be
hard working and by building their character from a boy to a man.

3. What do you think motivates Coach Carter to take the low-paying coaching job?
It is because he came from Richmond 30 years ago and he is also a basketball player but he saw his fellow
basketball player got prisoned, killed and he wanted to change the mistake from the past, he wanted to change the
lives of every player to shine like as children do.

4. What does Coach Carter say is one way to demonstrate respect to an adult? When using these terms, which
type of growth is demonstrated (physical, social, emotional, intellectual?)
For me social and intellectual, because of how they respect their coach it means they uses their
intellectual and through that they learned how to socialized other people well even their opponents they learned
not to trash talk and taunt them anymore and show respect on them and act like a champion.

5. Do you think that the contract is fair? What does your opinion say about your values?
Yes, because it is how Coach Carter taught his players to follow simple rule and law. His contract are all for
the athletes benefits not just in basketball, he also preparing his players for the near future, when they go to
college they are bold enough and disciplined.

6. How does Coach Carter’s son Damien demonstrate perseverance in achieving his goals?
By being disciplined, obeying to his father, straight to the goal and especially respecting other people. His
son is a reflection of how Coach Carter being excellent in coaching.
7. After the first basketball game, what does Cruz do to try to boost his self-esteem? Does he succeed in raising
his self-esteem?
After the first game he always did self-proclaimed to boost his confident but ended up conflict with his team and
failed to raise his self- esteem because he knows himself that he is scared of something, something powerful out of
his limit.
8. Once Cruz asks Coach Carter if he can return to the team, how does he demonstrate self-discipline?
When he first came back to the team he shows that he is serious in turning back, his perseverance and
willingness to be with the team have showed even though it’s impossible to do 2,500 push and 1,000 suicide he
still keep on doing and then he start changing his behavior by obeying Coach Carter.

9. What value does the team show by helping Cruz do push-ups and suicides?
Team work and unity, every big challenges in life you are not alone, the team showed what a true team is. Helping
each other’s up.

10. The team worked hard to win the tournament. What helped them win? What do they value?
They win because they apply and acquire of what Coach Carter taught to them, being focus, disciplined and
respect to others. They value to win basketball

11. What does Coach Carter value more, winning basketball games or an education? Which do you value more
and why?
Coach Carter value both winning and education, he didn’t agree that his player are just good in playing
and get trophies, he also ensuring that his athlete are also academically inclined and they will not be left behind in
the classroom. For me I value more education because I’ve learned in the movie the value of education of child’s
life in order to change the way they live.

12. How does the coach demonstrate compassion towards Cruz?

When Cruz brother shot and killed by man then he approaches Coach Carter that he wanted to be back in
the team and then Mr. Kenny Carter did not show that time as a coach he showed the love of a father, hug him
when he is down and called him “Son” and said I got you.

13. How did the boys grow intellectually from the lock-out? What was available to them in their environment to
help them grow intellectually?
From the lock – out they improved their academic performance because they are focused and they
realized the value of education and going to college. There are three volunteer teachers to help them out and they
allow to meet coach only in the library not in the gym.
15. Identify a part of the movie that shows how the coach/ athlete trainer emphasizes the value of exercise
physiology.
 When they do the first base line with Coach Carter, he said to them that none of them had problem in
shooting ball but they are all had a problem getting up and down.
 When their first game they only practice run and no defense and then they won the game.
 Every time they jog and exercise or trainings because it helped them in sports

16. What life lessons can be learned from the choices made by the characters in this story? [This question can
be limited to one particular character.]
I’ve learned a lot of lesson it Timo Cruz life because he portraits a character that are strong outside but
weak inside and never had a feeling of having a father. Timo was the black sheep of the team, he always back out
when things are not good but suddenly when his cousin shot and killed he came back on the team and changed.
Life lesson is everyone who did wrong or mistake has chances to change, don’t judge on what they did rather
believed on what they can do.

17. How does the basketball team show that they are loyal to Coach Carter after the school board has called off
the lock-out?
They stayed on the court and didn’t play basketball but they are all studying. They wanted to continue of what
Coach Carter started and thanks him for what he did for them.

18. Relate the quote “Mens sana in corpore sano” in the Movie.
“A healthy mind and a healthy body” like what Coach Carter did to them in lock-out they focused on study
and they are more capable and improved in basketball. It is important in athlete to have a peach of mind in order
to focus on the game and healthy body to execute the game well.

19. Relate the movie on the importance of the role of a coach/ athlete trainer in the physiological aspect of a
student athlete.
The importance of the role of a coach is they are the one guiding the athlete, maintain their exercise and
trainings enable to improve and a coach is the one who encourages athlete to be a winner and to not give up. Like
for what Coach Carter did he always punish when they broke the rules a push and suicide but that punishment can
help them to improve physically and win the game.

20. If you were Coach Carter, will you stand up for what you believed in? Explain your answer.
If I were him I think I couldn’t make it because it’s hard to discipline teenagers like them and one of the
worst part in the movie is when he is being persecuted for how he made a step to change the life of the athletes or
his strategy being bashed by the parents and students and if I am in Coach Carter position I’d rather run and step
back but this movie taught me to believed that you can whatever you wanted and noting is impossible as long as
you believe.
