INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Schools, colleges and universities have no worth without students. Students are
most essential asset for any educational institute. The social and economic
development of the country is directly linked with students’ performance. The students’
performance (academic achievement) plays an important role in producing the best
quality graduates who will become great leader and manpower for the country thus
responsible for the country’s economic and social development (Ali et al, 2009).

The importance of English language for enhancing educational attainment

through improved communication ability can never be over emphasized. Students who
have so much difficulties with their communication skill in English language may not
function effectively, not only in English language but in their academic and this is no
reason than the fact that English language in Philippines today is the language of text-
books and the language of instruction in schools. When Students’ Proficiency in English
Language is high, it will definitely affect and improve the academic performance of such
students. Nevertheless, where the proficiency in English is lacking in any academic
setting, it will definitely lower the academic performance of such students.

Judging someone can have similar effects to other forms of discrimination.

People describe feeling isolated, ashamed, misunderstood, criticised and demeaned.
Judging can also result in students being less likely to talk about what they’re going
through and ask for the help they need. Students choose to lack themselves up rather
than express their opinions and emotions thus, affecting their overall social life and
academic performance

Mosha, (2014) said that, students’ performance was affected by shortage of

English teachers and absence of teaching and learning materials. However, her findings
showed that, the presence of untrained, under-qualified and trained teachers who are 2
incompetent resulted to skip teaching some difficult topics in the syllabus and students’
infrequent use of English language at school and home, large class size, teachers’

responsibilities, poor conducive teaching and learning environment in the classrooms,

limited home support environment and poverty are among the factors that affecting
students’ academic performance in English Language

Performance in public schools is something which everyone expects to be of

higher quality because of the roles the sector plays to provide service to the community,
on the other hand those who failed to perform better cannot contribute well to the
human resources because they don’t have skill needed.

Educational life is an important aspect of every individual’s life that greatly

impacts other aspects of his/her life. People come into an academic environment, due
to multiple factors; they have to go through a high pressure period. Students are the
essential part of institutes and the progress of institutes depends on them, similarly,
they mainly contribute in the prosperity of the country. But now-a-days students are
suffering from man problems in their institutes/universities due to the burden of work,
technological changes they are getting, pressure from others, financial capacity and etc.

Methodology

The researchers followed relevant procedures in conducting this study. The

prepared questionnaire was distributing to the respondents which are included in the
study. Distributed questionnaire were returned back after being filled by thre
respondents.

The study was confined to Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology
(NEUST) in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija. However, every effort was made to ensure
that sampling used was adequate to collect information required for drawing
conclusions. Fifty (50) freshmen or First Year BSBA students, Twenty five (25) male
and preferred by the researcher as the main respondents because they were the direct
consumers of the researcher’s concern. Researchers used survey questionnaire to
gather significant data needed in the study. The respondent’s view were drawn through
a pllaned set of questionnaire intended to acquire specific information to meet the
desired need about the research topic.

The responses of the respondents on the table above shows that the first in the
ranking is the statement item 1.4 which states, “Students are satisfied with the teaching
methods of the lecturers” with a mean 4. 30 verbally interpreted as “Agree”. 1.4 NEUST
students are satisfied with the techniques and methods of their teachers in teaching. It
got the highest weighted median. And it makes a huge impact in student’s ability to
absorb the lesson if the teachers have a lot of methods and ways of teaching and will
definitely affect their grades.

The second in the ranking is the statement item 1.1 which states, “Easily to
understand the presented books, but facing difficulty in expressing things in my own
words.” with a mean 4.04 verbally interpreted as “Agree”. 1.1 surveys show that most
students don’t know how to express themselves. They are afraid to get rejected by
others that’s why they are always struggling or hiding their emotions and opinions and
will end up not communicating with others.

The third in the ranking is the statement item 1.8 which states,” Worrying about
what other people think/ Afraid of disappointing people’s expectation”, and it seems
likes students are afraid of getting judged by others. They always think of what other
thinks about them. Afraid of not meeting the expectation or promises from others. And
this will put them in a lot of stress and will definitely affect their performance in
university.

The fourth in the ranking is the statement item 1.2 which states,” Struggling for
using a proper English Language because my language is still not good enough for
university level”, students tend to struggle with speaking in English and will end up not
answering at all. They confessed that they are still having problems constructing their
English vocabulary. Even though they are already at college level.

the sentence. And will end up being judged by others. Respondents will choose to not
answer in the first place rather attempting it first.

The sixth in the ranking is the statement item 1.7 which states, “Competition
Factor makes me work hard badly/ Competition creates stress among us competition is
good sometimes to make us”, put an extra effort to what we are doing healthy
competition like others say but too much competition will not make us productive. It will
create a dispute among other students and will result to conflict and stress of getting
defeated and being a failure.

The seventh in the ranking is the statement item 1.5 which states,” ” Lecturer
enhances the information/knowledge of the students “,shows that not all but most
teachers didn’t put effort in expanding the students’ knowledge of students. Other
teachers tell facts or trivia about the topics and try to correct student’s simple mistakes.
While others don’t care and just proceeds to teach only their lessons and nothing else.

The seventh in the ranking also is the statement item 1.9 which states,” ” Lack of
financial support/ assistance”, others are hardworking, intelligent confident about
themselves but are financially lacking of support and assistance. We all know that even
if going to college is free we still need money for other purposes. And by lacking, it will
affect the student performance.

The ninth in the ranking also is the statement item 1.6 which states,” Pressure
from parents/ Parents involvement”, most students have pressure from their parents.
They are afraid to let them down or disappoint them because most parents think their
child can do everything and has a lot of expectation. And this will lead to an opposite
outcome because the students are always afraid that they will make mistake and
disappoint their parents.

The tenth in the ranking also is the statement item 1.12 which states,” I enjoy
expressing ideas to others”, expressing ideas are good for cooperation but students
tend to struggle about expressing. Once again they are not confident about their selves
they think they still lack and not capable enough to say something. And will cause of
them not cooperating and communicating to others.

The eleventh in the ranking also is the statement item 1.13 which states “I am
not afraid to be evaluated/judged by others “,some are okay of being judge and others
are not. Others used this side comments to correct themselves and be a better version
of themselves. While others are really affected by the judgements and it will be a burden
for them and will lead to negative and stressful outcome affecting their performance in
college.

Summary of Findings

The first factors: Factors of English Language and Communication affecting

student academic performance. The results showed that many learners could not
master the English as their language and they had very poor knowledge of vocabularies
used in various subjects, they had weak English capacity to the extent of failing to make
good and logical sentence in English.

The second factors: Factors of teaching style that affecting student academic
performance. The results found that students' performance is significantly correlated
with satisfaction with academic environment. Amongst education researchers, teacher
quality is widely considered an important school factor and maybe even be the most
important factor of students learning. The quality of education is directly related to the
quality of teaching and learning. These characteristics involved teacher qualifications
and experiences, their level of motivation, personal attributes, attitude, and commitment.
Studies show that when teachers are motivated and love the teaching profession,
students are motivated to learn the content taught by their teachers more effectively.

Conclusion

When parents have realistic expectations this can foster an increase in the child’s
self-esteem and encourage healthy development. On the contrary, putting too much
pressure on a child can lead to increased feelings of anxiety and can negatively impact
their sense of self-worth, especially when they are not able to meet these expectations.
This may also lead to them labelling themselves as a failure or cause them to want to
give up easily. Placing high expectations on children removes their sense of control and
ownership as they tend to have no say in the matter. The key is to develop a clear
understanding of your child’s abilities and strengths so as to encourage them to reach
their potential and nurture their strengths.

Students are satisfied with the methods of the teachers' use in explaining
lessons. Teacher preparation and knowledge of teaching and learning, experience,
subject matter knowledge and certification all establish teacher effectiveness. Teacher
preparation is important to their effectiveness in a classroom. Good quality teacher
preparation is important to student academic achievement.

Academic competition is advantageous when it challenges students to work

harder on their studies and helps them get excited about academic content.
Competition can be negative when it leads to unbalanced living or forces students to
give up their other interests. Parents and teachers can encourage students to have a
balanced approach to preparing and executing academic challenges, without sacrificing
their other passions. Academic competitions can be disadvantageous for students when
they lead to fear, anxiety and disappointment. Students might worry that they won't
measure up or will disappoint their teachers or parents. To help reduce anxiety,
teachers often promote friendly, age-appropriate games, grade-level-specific exams
and academic competitions that encourage students to beat their own previous
individual scores. By focusing on personal academic goals and individualized progress
reports, parents and teachers encourage students to do their personal best, rather than
competing against peers.

While the debate goes on which language of instruction nation has to take to
allow effective learning our secondary schools, there is a need of schools to strengthen
the good practice for students to practice English in everywhere and every place they
require school services. This would build vocabularies, build skills in communication
using English and confidence in using English ultimately they can apply it in their
studies and in answering questions. If the government will still use English as one of
official language in teaching, government should need to make sure the students are
well educated in English vocabulary because if the students don’t know how to speak
and write in English language, they will not going to understand the lessons that will be
thought to them in using the English language. As we can all see most students are still
having problems constructing their sentence even after graduating in high school and
are still not confident speaking it.
