RATIONALE
Nowadays, with the advent of globalization that paves the way to a more challenging and

demanding prospects waiting for the generations of tomorrow, aside from academic excellence,

oral language proficiency has been a great factor for future employment and success. In a

nutshell, English becomes the second most important language to the students. It is because they

need to master the language in order to excel in their study and to prepare them for the

competitive job market. They have to compete with other graduates who not only have good

academic qualifications but also good communication skills in English. Nonetheless, students

from different backgrounds and native language must adjust in order to cope with the trends of

globalization. However, since English Language is not mainly the native language of all

students, they are facing several dilemmas such as redundancy, stage fright, rate of delivery,

stress, rhythm, and intonation.

Having attained the Level III Accreditation and considered as the crème of the crop of

Occidental Mindoro State College, the College of Teacher Education students are much required

and pressured in speaking the English Language. Thus, this study will be sought in order to know

the adjustments that the College of Teacher Education students do to address their problems with

regard to speaking fluently. This study also aims to determine the relationship of their coping

mechanism towards problems faced during speaking to their level of oral language proficiency.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What are the coping mechanisms of College of Teacher Education students in terms of:

a. redundancy;

b. stage fright;

c. rate of delivery; and

d. stress, rhythm and intonation?

2. What is the level of oral language proficiency of College of Teacher Education students

in terms of:

a. comprehension;

b. fluency;

c. vocabulary;

d. pronunciation; and

e. grammar

3. Is there any significant relationship between the level of coping mechanisms of College

of Teacher Education students and their level of oral language proficiency?

4. Which among the coping mechanisms of College of Teacher Education students

significantly influence their level of oral language proficiency?

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research method of the study. It includes where the study will be

conducted, who and how many will be the respondents, what instrument to be used, what method

to be used, how the study will be conducted, how the information needed was adopted and how

data were analyzed to solve the problem.

Research Design

This study is a descriptive non- experimental method of research as it aims to discover

the item relationship among dimensions of the problem which is the purpose of this study- to

determine the relationship between the level of coping mechanisms of College of Teacher

Education students and their level of oral language proficiency.

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted at the College of Teacher Education of Occidental Mindoro

State College - Main Campus in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. This is to eliminate other factors

about the venue which may affect the results of the study.

Respondents of the Study

The study will utilize sample students who are enrolled in College of Teacher Education

of Occidental Mindoro State College in the second semester of the school year 2016-2017. The

respondents are selected through the use of stratified proportional random sampling. From the

population of 541 students, the study will use a sample of students to a total of 135 respondents-

5 students from first year; 182 students from second year; 181 students from third year and 40
students from fourth year. The Table below shows the distribution on the number of the

respondents by year level.

Table 1. Distribution of the respondents

YEAR LEVEL POPULATION PROPORTION SAMPLE

1st 18 3.33% 5
2nd 182 33.64% 45
3rd 181 33.46% 45
4th 160 29.57% 40
Total 541 100% 135

Research Instrument

In order to gather information needed for this study, the instrument to be used will be

questionnaire which will be answered by respondents through survey and rubric which will be

used during observation.

The questionnaire will be used to determine the level of coping mechanisms of College of

Teacher Education in terms of redundancy, stage fright, rate of delivery, and stress, rhythm and

intonation. It is composed of 20 items. Every indicator has five questions where all items were

mae by the researchers. The first part uses Likert Scale. The highest value is 5 while 1 is the

lowest. The scales that was used to measure were the following:

Option Scale Range Verbal Interpretation

5 4.50- 5.50 Very High
4 3.50-4.49 High
3 2.50-3.49 Moderate
2 1.50-2.49 Low
1 1.00- 1. 49 Very Low
To measure the level of oral language proficiency, students will undergo into a speaking

activity which is interview. They will be assessed by five experts in teaching speaking using

analytic rubric which was adopted from Language Proficiency Handbook of Margo Gottlieb.

Since the questionnaire used are researcher-made, the questionnaire to be used in the

study is needed to be validated. Using the criteria developed for evaluating survey questionnaire

by Carter V. Good and Douglas B. Scates, a jury of experts will evaluate the questionnaire.

Every criteria will be judged whether it is strongly manifested, manifested, moderately

manifested, least manifested or not manifested. Afterwards, total weighted mean will be

calculated and be interpreted based on this index:

Option Scale Range Verbal Interpretation

5 4.50- 5.50 Highly Valid

4 3.50-4.49 Valid

3 2.50-3.49 Moderately Valid

2 1.50-2.49 Least Valid

1 1.00- 1. 49 Not Valid

Every item will also be evaluated by the set of jury to determine if the item will be

included, improved, or discarded.

The reliability of the instrument will be determined using the Alpha Cronbach Formula.

Twenty College of Teacher Education students who are not actual respondents of this study will

be asked to take part by simply answering the questionnaire given to them.

The following is the index of interpretation of reliability values used:

0 – no reliability

±0.01- ±0.20 – negligible reliability

±021- ±0.40 – low or slight reliability

±0.41- ±0.70 – marked or moderate reliability

±0.71- ±0.90 – High reliability

±0.91- ±0.99 – very high reliability

±1.00 – perfect reliability

The reliability of the first part of the instrument using the Alpha Cronbach Formula is

computed to be 0.8 which indicates the questionnaire is, indeed, reliable. While, in the second

part is 0.7.

To examine the thesis proposal, the researchers will seek the approval of the research

proposal from their research adviser and research instructor and will undergo proposal defense

where the propose study will be examined and approve by the research panel. Upon approval, the

researchers will prepare the questionnaires, rubrics and other concerning matters needed in the

study.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the experts have validated the questionnaire, the reliability of the prepared

questionnaire will be tested in advance among the twenty College of Teacher Education students.

Administration of the questionnaire for actual study will come after the validity and reliability of

the instrument is determined.

After which, necessary permit will also be sought from the Dean of the College of

Teacher Education for the researchers to conduct the study. Sample selection will follow

afterwards. The researchers will personally distribute and administer the questionnaire so as to

explain very well the purpose of the studies. Instructions will be clearly stated so as to gather the

correct and accurate data as a real reflection of their response. The researchers will assure the

confidentiality of the survey sheets since the identities are not important. The researchers also

understand that people’s consciousness may also affect their honesty and effectiveness in

answering the survey, and so, the researchers will give people the option of being anonymous.

Participants will be given time to respond and then the researchers will collect the surveys forms

the next day. There will be no incentives to be offered to the participants of the research study.

The responses will be checked, tallied, tabulated and interpreted.

Data Analysis

This study will use the following formula for computation: (a) weighted mean to

determine the level of coping mechanisms and oral language proficiency; (c) Pearson Product-

Moment Correlation Coefficient to test if there is significant relationship between the level of

digital information fluency and the level of vocabulary skill of the College of Teacher Education

students; and (d) Regression analysis to determine which among the coping mechanisms

significantly affect the level of oral language proficiency.
