CHAPTER 2

METHOD

Presented in this chapter are the research design used, research subject,
research instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

The study employed the Descriptive Correlational Method. It is descriptive since

it will assess the information on the effectiveness of blended learning in relation to
students’ engagement during internship of college education students. For instance, the
purpose of a descriptive study is to provide a picture of situation, person or event or
show how things are related to each other and as it naturally occurs (Blumberg, Cooper
and Schindler, 2006).

Research Subjects

Presented in table 1 is the distribution of respondents. The respondents of the

study were 19 Graduate students in Bachelor of Secondary Education at Holy Cross
College of Sasa, Inc. Batch 2021 – 2022.

The total number of respondents was determined with the use of Slovins’
formula. A purposive sampling technique was used in the determination of the selection
of respondents.

Research Instrument

2
The instrument used in this study was based on items drawn from the research
study entitled “Student Perceptions and Achievement in a University Blended Learning
Strategic Initiative”, the survey questionnaire is in the appendix of Owston, R. et al.,
(2013) and from “The Student Engagement in Schools Questionnaire (SESQ) and the
Teacher Engagement Report Form-New (TERF-N): Examining the Preliminary
Evidence” of Hart, S. et al., (2011). The questionnaire for Blended Learning includes
indicators in terms of student satisfaction, course satisfaction and grades, student
perceptions of convenience and grades, and student engagement and grades. The
questionnaire was composed of five (5) items per indicator and a total of fifteen (15)
items.

On the other hand, the questionnaire for students’ engagement includes

indicators in terms of affective liking for learning, behavior, effort, and persistent, and
cognitive. The questionnaire was composed of five (5) items per indicator and a total of
fifteen (15) items. The respondents of this study are the 19 Graduate students in
Bachelor of Secondary Education at Holy Cross College of Sasa, Inc. Batch 2021 –
2022.

The scale below will be used to elicit responses from the participants on Blended
Learning.

Range of Means Description Interpretation

4.00 – 5.00 Strongly Agree This indicates that Blended

Learning is always observed.

3.50 – 4.49 Agree This indicates that the Blended

Learning is often observed.

3
2.50 – 3.49 Neutral This indicates that the Blended
Learning is sometimes observed.

1.50 – 2.49 Disagree This indicates that the Blended

Learning is seldom observed.

1.00 – 1.49 Strongly Disagree This indicates that the Blended

Learning is never observed.

The scale below will be used to elicit responses from the participants on
Students’ Engagement During Internship.

4.00 – 5.00 Strongly Agree This indicates that Students’

Engagement During Internship
is always observed.

is never observed.
Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will present a letter of approval to the Dean of College in

Holy Cross College of Sasa, Inc. to ask permission to conduct a study inside the
school premises. Before starting the data gathering procedure, the research tool
will be subjected to validity and reliability tests to ensure that the quality of data
that will be gathered from respondents is accurate. The survey questionnaire will
be validated by a panel composed of three experts, a statistician, a grammarian,
and a program head of education. The reliability test will be conducted based on
the results of the study that will be held at Holy Cross College of Sasa, Inc. The
letter will also include the sample questionnaire for further assessment and will be
subjected to approval or modification of the study. Before giving the survey
questionnaire, the respondents will be oriented and informed about the purpose of
the study. The researchers will also emphasize that their identity and privacy will
be ensured and their answers to the questionnaire will be confidential to others.

After the data has been collected it will be statistically treated, analyzed, and
interpreted.

5
Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were used in the computation data:

Mean - This is used to determine the effectiveness of blended learning in relation

to students’ engagement during internship of college education students.

Pearson Product Moment Correlation - This is used to determine the

significance of the relationship between blended learning and students’ engagement
during their internship.
