CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Rationale

Punctuality is said to be the soul the role of businness and there can be nothing more

fundamental to the school business than punctuality (Ezewu, 1982) and it can be subdivided in

two dimension; coming to school and closing at the right time. In flag ceremony for instance the

students advantage from it where important information, prayer and admonition are made. The

school has interconnection within the school and community they are responsible for discipline

and guided by the regulation of duty master that covers planning, controlling and organizing

(kachchar, 2002). Basically the school is not only mandated punishment for the late comers but

developing structure and strategy for preventing the habitual tardiness of students. On the other

side, students are completely rationalize excusing, such as traffic, intervention, long-distance,

family problem, working students, passive etc. However, students attendance policy has been

commission by the Department of Education from grade schools to colleges which strives to

develop and authorize all students to come early and be punctual at all times to fulfill their own

fundamental potential ensuring the full force to the curriculum itself According to Santillo

(2010) reported that psychological theorist considered some “personality traits” Including

anxiety and low self-esteem as absolute factors of lateness but some believed As an “inborn

quality”. The study of Pimentel and Quijada (2011) focused on the frequency of use of famous

social networking sites tackled by the UP Cebu freshmen students. Moreover, students have

mindsets or belief that there are no positive incentives to be on time as they assume that there
will be no constructive activities happen for the first ten minutes pertaining to class hour and

specifically to school activities.

Therefore, one of the greatest concern among school administration or the community

within is tardiness and it has become an educational crime nowadays (millennium period, 21St

Century). These problems range from government, parents and society. In general, there is a big

implication of continuous and contagious predicament about the tardiness of students.

Conceptual Framework

This study determined effects of tardiness on the academic performance of senior high

school learners of Tabawan Integrated school S.Y. 2022-2023. Figure 1 depicts the flow of the

study as well as the interplay of the variables that were considered during the investigation.

THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

This study determined the Effects of Tardiness on the Academic Performance of Senior

High School Learners of Tabawan Integrated School for School Year 2022-2023.

Specifically, this sought answer to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the student-respondents in terms of:

1.1. Age;

1.2. Gender;

1.4. Strands;

1.5. Parents’ Highest Educational Attainment; and,

1.6. Family Monthly Income?

2. What is the level of academic performance of the respondents in terms of:

2.1. Quizzes;

2.2. Recitation;

2.3. Performance Task; and,

2.4. Quarterly exams?

3. What are the levels of student’s tardiness in terms of:

3.1. Attendance;

3.2. Submitted works?

4. What are the factors that contribute to the tardiness of the Senior High School Learners

of Tabawan Integrated School?


5. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and their level

of tardiness?

6. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance of the

respondents and their level of tardiness?

7. Is there a significant difference between the factors affecting students tardiness and the

level of their tardiness in terms of;

7.1. Attendance

7.2. Submitted works

8. Based on the findings of the study, what program intervention can be proposed to

lessen the effects of Tardiness to the academic performance of the senior high school learners.

Significance of the Study

Null Hypotheses

In this study, the following null hypotheses was formulated:

1. There is no significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and their

level of tardiness.

2. There is no significant relationship between the academic performance of the

respondents and their level of tardiness.

3. There is no significant difference between the factors affecting students tardiness and

the level of their tardiness in terms of;
