Chapter 2

Method

This Chapter discussed the description of the research method used, the

procedure of the study including the sampling techniques, the research instruments

and the statistics used in the analysis data.

Research Design

This study utilized quantitative research employing descriptive correlation

method. This method is the specification of methods and procedures acquiring the

information needed and generally employed surveys of data that rely on existing

records (Bradley, 2013). Hence this method was appropriate to determine the level of

english fluency inside the classroom as a predictor on academic performance among

grade 12 automotive students, and examine the correlation between the two variables.

Research Subject

This part discussed research locale, time of data gathering and respondent.

This study is conducted in DBTC. The respondents were the batch 4 of grade 12

automotive students of DBTC. There were the 40 total number of respondents: 20

from section Albera and 20 from section Vigano.

Research Instrument

There were two research instruments used in this study to measure the

student’s english fluency inside the classroom as a predictor for academic

performance. The distribution of questionnaire was based on universal sampling.

English Fluency inside the Classroom Questionnaire. This questionnaire

was developed by Apple (2011). This would measure how students speak english

fluently inside the classroom. It consists of 3 indicators that assessed english fluency

inside the classroom: past english classroom experience, current english classroom
11

perception and perceived social value of speaking english. Each indicator had 8 items

with a total of 24 items. The ease of manifestation was 1 as strongly disagree, 2

disagree, 3 moderate, 4 agree and 5 as strongly disagree. There were few

modifications made and validated by experts. A Five-Point Likert Scale was specified

below:

Range of means Adjectival Rating Descriptive

Interpretation

4.50-5.00 Very High (VH) This means that the

students have always manifested
their English fluency inside the
classroom as a predictor in
academic performance.
3.50-4.49 High (H) This means that the
students have mostly manifested
their English fluency inside the
classroom as a predictor in
2.50-3.49 Moderate (M) This means that the
academic performance.
students have sometimes
manifested their English fluency
inside the classroom as a
predictor in academic
performance.

1.50-2.49 Low (L) This means that the

students have rarely manifested
their English fluency inside the
classroom as a predictor in
academic performance.

1.00-1.49 Very Low (VL) This means that the

students have never manifested
their English fluency inside the
classroom as a predictor in
academic performance.

Academic Performance. The tool that will be utilized for the academic

performance of the students will based on the grading system of Don Bosco Training

Center Mati, with the following criteria:

Learner Progress and Achievement

Descriptors Grading Scales Remarks
Outstanding 90-100 Passed
Very Satisfactory 85-89 Passed
Satisfactory 80-84 Passed
Fairly Satisfactory 75-79 Passed
Did Not Meet Expectations below 75 Failed

Permission to Conduct the Study. The letter of request to conduct the study

was submitted to the office the school’s administrator for approval.

Administrator of Retrieval of Questionnaire. The questionnaire ware

administered to the grade 12 automotive students in DBTC and were answered within

twenty to thirty minutes. The administered questionnaire we’re retrieved after they

have answered it.

Collating and Subjecting the Data to Statistical Analysis. The responses to

the items of the questionnaire by the grade 12 automotive students were accurately

tallied and recorded correspondingly with confidentially. The data were encoded,

tabulated, analysed, interpreted, and determined with new knowledge generated to

give essence to the factual investigation.

Ethical Consideration. The researcher presented the content to the

respondents to let them know why they were involved in the study. Participation of
14

respondents were voluntarily that they have been fully informed regarding to the

purpose of the study. Confidentially protection and privacy was certified to the

participant.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data gathered were analyzed and interpreted using the appropriate

statistical treatment as follows:

Mean. This was used to determine the level of english fluency inside the

classroom as a predictor on academic performance of grade 12 automotive students in

DBTC.
