Safety precautions when working with Electricity

1. Avoid water at all times when working with electricity. Never touch or try repairing
any electrical equipment or circuits with wet hands. It increases the conductivity of
the electric current.
2.  Never use equipment with frayed cords, damaged insulation or broken plugs.
3.  Always use insulated tools while working.
4.  Electrical hazards include exposed energized parts and unguarded electrical
equipment which may become energized unexpectedly. Such equipment always
carries warning signs like “Shock Risk”. Always be observant of such signs and
follow the safety rules.
5.  Always use appropriate insulated rubber gloves and goggles while working on any
branch circuit or any other electrical circuit.
6. Never try repairing energized equipment. Always check that it is de-energized first by
using a tester
7. Never use an aluminum or steel ladder if you are working on any receptacle at height.
Use a bamboo, wooden or a fiberglass ladder instead.
8. Always check all your GFCI’s once a month.

9. Never use an electrical plug whose third prong (which is the grounding pin) has been
removed.
10. When an electrical appliance is plugged in and is running, it is “under load” and it
should not be unplugged. Doing so could cause an arc of electricity from the outlet to
the plug.
11. Never, ever, ever touch a downed power line.
12. Never work on live equipment.
13. Never use metallic pencils or rulers, or wear rings or metal watchbands when
working with electrical equipment.
14. If an individual comes in contact with a live electrical conductor, do not touch
the equipment, cord or person. Disconnect the power source from the circuit breaker
or pull out the plug using a leather belt.
15. Equipment producing a “tingle” should be disconnected and reported promptly for
repair.
16. Do not store highly flammable liquids near electrical equipment.
