Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Science VI

I. Describe the changes on the Earth’s surface as a result of earthquakes

S6ES-Iva-1
- Describe how earthquake affects the environment
II. Effects of an Earthquake
a. The New Science Links 6, pp. 328-331
DCLM IX, Topography, Flora and Fauna
b. Charts, pictures, video, activity worksheets and power point presentation, picture of
Menasngi Beach
c. Observing, describing, inferring
III. 1. ENGAGEMENT
a. Review
Ask: How does an earthquake occur? What is the difference between magnitude
and intensity? What is used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake? What is used to
describe the intensity of an earthquake? Describe an intensity VIII earthquake.
b. Motivation

Present this picture. Have the pupils talk about it.

Ask: What can you infer about the cause of this surface rupture?

2. EXPLORE
a. Divide the class into three groups.
b. Recall the standards during cooperative work.

EARTHQUAKE: ITS EFFECTS

Problem: What are the effects of earthquake?
What You Need: Video, Cartolina, Pentel Pen
What To Do:
Watch the video presented by your teacher.
Take note of the effects of earthquake.
Discuss with your group. Describe the effects of earthquake through the following:
Group 1: Poster
Group 2: Semantic web
Group 3: Concept Map
Prepare to present your output.

Note: Group presentation shall be graded following the rubric below.

Group 1 (Poster)

Criteria 1 2 3
Content Hardly shows an Shows a fair understanding of Shows a good understanding
understanding of concepts concepts of concepts
Clarity Hardly makes sense Makes some sense Easy to understand
3. EXPLAINATION
Each group presents the results of the activity. Teacher encourages interaction among the
class, clarifies the misconceptions and addresses questions.

4. ELABORATION
a. Generalization
What are the effects of earthquakes?

b. Application
Ask: What earth changes do you observe in each picture? What inference can
you make about the causes of each change?

c. Contextualization
Show pictures.
Ask: Are you familiar with this place? Where is this found? What possible changes
can happen to Menasngi beach if a strong earthquake hits this place?

d. History and Math Integration/Values Infusion

Say: Earthquakes are natural phenomenon. The 2010 Haiti earthquake was catastrophic
magnitude 7.0 with 316, 000 death toll. How should we behave if the same magnitude of earthquake
hits our place?

e. EVALUATION
Direction: Read each item carefully. Put a check ( ) mark before the number if the item shows an
effect of earthquake and cross (X) if not.

_______1. Destruction of properties and houses

_______2. Increase of food production
_______3. Ground rupture
_______4. Buried landscapes due to landslides
_______5. Increase of soil fertility
_______6. Ash fall
_______7. Loss of lives
_______8.Wiping out of coastal communities due to the generated tsunami
_______9. Fire
_______10.Shaping of landforms

Assignment: Draw a poster that shows an effect of earthquake. Below the picture, describe how
damage of such effect can be minimized.
