I. OBECTIVES
Content Standard The Learners demonstrate an understanding of: the relationship among
the locations of volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and mountain
ranges.
The Learners shall be able to: 1. demonstrate ways to ensure disaster
Performance Standard preparedness during earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions 2.
suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government efforts in
reducing damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
Learning Competencies Describe the internal structure of the Earth; S9ES –Ia-j36.4
Knowledge Define seismic waves scientifically.
Skills Discuss the characteristics of the different types of seismic waves.
Attitude Appreciate the importance of seismic waves in studying the
earth`s interior.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory The teacher will show a music video on seismic waves.

B. Motivation Based on the music video, what are seismic waves? (Ans.:
Seismic waves are mechanical vibrations that occur inside the
earth which is caused by the breakage of rocks.)
C. Activity The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups. Each group will
brainstorm on what they have learned about how an earthquake
happens. They are given 20 minutes to do it, then after the time
limit, they are to present the concept in their most creative way;
may it be in a form of dancing, singing, poetry, drawing,
storytelling, etc.
Criteria:
Content – 5 points
Artistry – 3 points
Teamwork – 2 points
D. Analysis What is the difference between body waves and surface waves?
(Ans.: Body waves can travel through the inner layers of the earth
while surface waves can only travel through the surface of the
earth.)
E. Abstraction An earthquake is a vibration of the Earth produced by the rapid
release of energy most often because of the slippage along a fault
in the Earth’s crust. This energy radiates in all directions from the
focus in the form of waves called seismic waves, which are
recorded in seismographs.

Seismic waves are classified into two types: the surface waves
and the body waves.

type of surface wave? (Ans.: Rayleigh wave)

H. Generalization Seismic waves are produced during earthquakes when energy
from the focus radiates in all directions of the earth.
