Grade: 10 Subject: SCIENCE

Quarter FIRST Week No: 2 Session No. 1

I. OBECTIVES
Content Standard The learners demonstrate an understanding of: the
relationship among the locations of volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters, and mountain ranges.
Performance Standard The learners shall be able to:
1. demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness
during earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions
2. suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to
government efforts in reducing damage due to earthquakes,
tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions
Learning Competencies The learners should be able to:
1. describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters, and major mountain belts;
Code: S10ES –Iaj-36.1
Knowledge To describe the distribution of earthquake epicenters and
major belts.
Skills To identify the areas prone to earthquakes.
Attitude To tell of some precautionary measures one should make
when they are on earthquake prone areas.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparation Show different maps on the board (These maps are the maps
that will be used by the students in the activity, if possible the
teacher can have it printed in tarpaulin)

B. Motivational Ask: What can you say of these maps?

Question (Ans: Different Maps showing the distribution of active
volcanoes, mountain ranges and earthquake distribution in
the world.)
What do these maps tell us?
(Ans: It tells us where the different volcanoes and mountain
ranges in the world can be found and possible earthquakes
can occur.)
C. Activity Map Analysis
- The class is divided into 4 groups. Each group will
be given different maps for them to study and
analyze.
Group Seismologists: Map of Earthquake Distribution
Group Volcanologists - Map of Active Volcanoes
Group Orologists - Map of Mountain Ranges of the World
Group Montologists- Map of Active Volcanoes (for
Sketching)
- Give 10 minutes for learners to study and analyze

the map assigned to them. Let them answer the
guide questions found in the activity sheet.
(For Day 1, let the Group Seismologists present
their work in front of the class.

D. Analysis Ask the following questions:

(Note to the Teacher: The following questions are the same
questions found on their activity sheets)
- How are earthquakes distributed on the map?
(Ans: The world’s earthquakes are not randomly distributed
over the Earth’s surface. They tend to be concentrated in
narrow zones)
- Where are they located?
(Ans: Some are located near the edges of the continents,
some are in mid- continents, while others are in oceans. But
not ALL edges of continents, mid-continents, or oceans can
be places where earthquake might occur.)
- Where are places with no earthquakes?
(Ans: Answers may vary. Some of the possible answers
are: large part of the Pacific Ocean, northernmost Asia,
majority of Europe, eastern portion of North and South
America and western Africa.)

E. Abstraction  The world’s earthquakes are not randomly

distributed over the Earth’s surface. They tend to be
concentrated in narrow zones)
 Some are located near the edges of the continents,
some are in mid- continents, while others are in
oceans. But not ALL edges of continents, mid-
continents, or oceans can be places where
earthquake might occur.

F. Application Why do you think it is important for us to identify areas

which are prone to earthquakes?

(Ans:It is important to identify areas which are prone to

earthquakes so that necessary precautions could be done if
ever you’re living in one of those places.)

G. Practical Anything can happen in a day, therefore, it is necessary that

in Daily Living
H. Generalization  It is relatively easy to see the relationships between
earthquakes and the plate boundaries. Along
divergent boundaries like the mid-Atlantic ridge and
the East Pacific Rise, earthquakes are common, but
restricted to a narrow zone close to the ridge, and
consistently at less than 30 km depth. Shallow
earthquakes are also common along transform

faults, such as the San Andreas Fault. Along
subduction zones earthquakes are very abundant,
and they are increasingly deep on the landward side
of the subduction zone.

and-plate-tectonics/.
I. Evaluation Answer briefly:

How are earthquakes and plate boundaries related?

Ans: Most earthquakes occur at the boundaries where

the plates meet. In fact, the locations of earthquakes and
the kinds of ruptures they produce help scientists define
the plate boundaries. There are three types of plate
boundaries: spreading zones, transform faults, and
subduction zones. 2. What can you infer if a city has a
volcano?

Activity: Map Analysis

Group 1: Map of Earthquake Distribution

Procedure:
1. Study Figure 1 showing the earthquake distribution around the world. Trace
the approximate locations of several earthquake “clusters” using a marking
pen on one of the plastic sheets.

Figure 1. Map of Earthquake Distribution
Q1. How are earthquakes distributed on the map?
Ans: The world’s earthquakes are not randomly distributed over the Earth’s surface. They tend
to be concentrated in narrow zones.
Q2. Where are they located?
Ans: Some are located near the edges of the continents

Q3. Where are there no earthquakes?

Q4. Why is it important for us to identify areas which are prone to earthquakes?

Group 2: Map of Active Volcanoes

Prepared by:

Figure 2. Map of Active Volcanoes

Q1. How are volcanoes distributed?

Q2. Where are they located?

Q3. Based on the map, mention a country that is unlikely to experience a volcanic eruption.

Group 3: Sketching the Location of Active Volcanoes.

Prepared by:
ARGELYN A. MAHUMOT
Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High School-Main
1. On the second plastic sheet, sketch the approximate locations of several volcanoes using a
marking pen.
2. Place the earthquake plastic sheet over the volcano plastic sheet.

Figure 2. Map of Active Volcanoes
Q1. Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters with the location of volcanoes
around the world.

Group 4: Map of Mountain Ranges in the World

Figure 3. Map of Mountain Ranges in the World
Q1. How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges with the
distribution of earthquake epicenters and volcanoes?

6. Now that you have seen the location of volcanoes, mountain ranges, and majority of
earthquake epicenters, study Figure 2 on page 7, Map of Plate boundaries once more.

Q14. What do you think is the basis of scientists in dividing Earth’s lithosphere into several
plates?
