What’s New

One morning in our school lobby I overheard my classmates, Marga

and Cassie, having an argument on who lives farther from the school.
“My house is 3000 meters away from school”, Said Marga.
“I live farther. My house is 3 kilometers away from school”, Cassie
answered.
If Marga’s house is 3000 meters away from school and Cassie’s is 3
kilometers, who lives farther from the school?

After reading, can you tell right away who lives farther from the
school? Where would you begin to solve this problem? Proceed to
learn some tips on how to solve the problem.

What Is It

A word problem is a situation that can be answered using one or

more operations. It may require one to make comparisons, form conclusions,
or provide answers supported by mathematical calculations.

In Mathematics, we have a four-step plan to solve problems.

Step 1. Understand the Problem.

Determine what information is A. What is asked?

given in the problem and what you B. What are the given values?
need to find. Do you have all the
information you need to solve the
problem?

6
Step 2. Devise a plan. C. What operation/s is/are to be

After you understand the used?

problem, select a strategy for solving

it. There may be several ideas or
strategies you can use.

Step 3. Carry out the plan. D. Write your solution.

Solve the problem by carrying

out your plan. If your plan doesn’t
work, try another.

Step 4. Look Back. E. Check your answer.

Finally, examine your answer

carefully. See if it fits the facts given
in the problem. You may also want to
solve the problem again in a different
way. If the answer is not correct,
make a new plan and start again.

Let’s answer the problem given earlier.

Problem 1 (Problem Involving Length)

One morning in our school lobby I overheard my classmates, Marga

and Cassie, having an argument on who lives farther from the school.
“My house is 3000 meters away from school”, Said Marga.
“I live farther, my house is 3 kilometers away from school”, Cassie
answered.
If Marga’s house is 3000 meters away from school and Cassies’s is
3 kilometers, then who lives farther from the school?

Using the four-step plan to solve problems, we will now know who lives
farther from the school? Is it Marga or Cassie?

7
Step 1: A. What is Who lives farther from the school
Understand the asked?
Problem. between Marga and Cassie?
B. What are the 3000 meters – Marga’s house
given values?
from school
3 kilometers – Cassie’s house
from school
Step 2: C. Operation/s to Multiplication
Devise a Plan. be used
Convert kilometers to meters
by multiplying 3 km by a unit
1000 m
fraction 1 km
.

Step 3: D. Solution Solving the distance of Cassie’s

Carry out the
house from the school:
Plan.

Solution A.

1000m
3km x = 3000 m
1km

Solution B. Using Metric Converter

3 km = _____m

km hm dam m dm cm mm

3 km = 3000 m

Step 4: E. Check your ?

Look Back. answer. 3000 m = 3 km

km hm dam m dm cm mm

Thus, 3000 m = 3 km
The distance of Cassie’s house from the school is 3000
Final Answer
meters. This means that Cassie’s and Marga’s house
have the same distance from the school.

Do you find the lesson interesting? Let’s have more examples.

kL hL daL L dL cL mL

Thus, 0.430 L = 430 mL

Final Answer Peter drinks 0.430 Liters of Chocolate drink in all.

What have you noticed from the examples given? Problems

involving conversion of units of length, weight, volume/capacity can
be solved using Metric Converter. Can we still use Metric Converter in
converting units of time and temperature? Well, let’s see.
