ABSTRACT

The study aims to know the degree of satisfaction of the food

served in the school canteen among Grade 12 ABM students. This study

was conducted to identify how are the students satisfied, and what make

them satisfied with the foods that are served in the school canteen and

designed as Descriptive Research. This study used a survey

questionnaire, the respondents were taken through the use of simple-

random sampling and the participants were Accountancy, Business and

Management Grade 12 students from sections Courage, Honesty and

Loyalty. The study used a checklist to know what are the foods that

students attain the most and a 5-point Likert-scale to determine whether

they are satisfied or not on the statements provided by the researchers.

Based on the findings, grow foods are the type of foods students

attain the most in the canteen that contains meat and other foods that

rich in protein. Grade 12 ABM’s satisfaction of the food is based on the

freshness, healthiness, and the nutritive value, students prefer the foods

that are get in their standards. The data shows that the Grade 12 ABM

students prefer the food that they are buying is budget friendly but high

quality of foods at the same time. This shows that many students typically

buy food based on their taste preference and their budget.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

School canteen is where foods are served for students to have

energy to accomplish the tasks throughout the day, because food plays a

big role in the student daily life. The Department of Education is strongly

committed to support student’s health and well-being through its

curriculum in schools and range initiatives that offer opportunities for

physically fit individuals who love eating healthy foods. Schools are

encouraged to implement comprehensive health and well-being programs,

including food and nutrition education. The establishment and operation

of school canteen is important in developing love and interest in buying

nutritious and healthy food among students, faculty and the school

personnel, making it possible for them to enjoy nutritious and healthy

food at affordable prices during school day. The canteen should also

provide the students variety of foods and dishes that enhance their skills

and knowledge (DepEd Order No.8 of 2007). But the foods that are

served in the canteen are always the same and the students are not

satisfied anymore, they left no choice but to buy foods to ease their

hunger.

This study also includes on what satisfaction will the students want

in their food, the problem in the school canteen are they always serve
same food every day and they’re being rude to their customers. Also,

what benefit in this study will students get and what other satisfaction can

make them satisfied in terms of food service and quality.

We conduct this study because as a student, we also need to feel

comfortable and satisfied during our break time after doing all the

academic tasks, so we want to know how to establish a strategy that will

meet the satisfaction of the students and also improve the foods in the

canteen.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Each student wanted to have good quality and proper serving of

food from the school canteen to gain energy for them to complete the

task throughout the day. Unfortunately, not all the students get satisfied

with the food served in the canteen due to lack of staffs and unreasonable

price. In this way, this study wanted to know the other reasons why the

students are not satisfied in the food served in the canteen. Specifically,

this study will aim to:

 Determine the reasons why students are not satisfied with the

food;

 Evaluate the satisfaction that the student wants

This are the following research questions:

1. What are the types of foods served in the canteen?

2. How are the students satisfied of the foods served in terms of;
 Price
 Menu
 Taste
3. To what extent Grade 12 ABM students get satisfied in the food

served in the canteen?

about the canteen’s services and foods. This research can help the school

to give new ideas and changes in the food served in the canteen.
For the students

This research will benefit the students to have a detailed analysis of

satisfaction of the canteen food served. The results would give knowledge

and ideas in the schoolmate’s level of satisfaction.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The scope of this research is only about the Degree of Satisfaction

on the School Canteen’s Service and Food of the Grade 12 ABM Students

of Pasay City South High School. This includes the foo that satisfies the

students, the services, the variety of products, and canteen facility.

The limitations of this study are the Grade 12 ABM Students of Pasay

City South High School who were randomly chosen to answer the

researchers survey questionnaire.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter reviews related literature and studies which serves as frame

of reference for this study. Related literature and studies, foreign and

local, are presented such that some of the present study’s variables

have been tackled.

RELATED LITERATURE

According to Dana (2016) she declared that Nutrition is extremely

relevant in improving a student’s ability to learn. It is important to settle

on the correct and proper equipment to be utilized in preparing the food

for the students as well as the equipment the students will use. Having

properly prepared food will boost the satisfaction of the student.

A canteen not only matters in its function to sell different kinds of

food, but it’s ability to make students socialize and develop friendships, to

be a study place for people where they can maintain mental power, and a

place to just sit back, relax and take a break from all the school works.

(Adel Tamano, 2011)

RELATED STUDIES
Consumer satisfaction is important for the food industry to ensure

product success. Food satisfaction was influenced by factors measured

during- and post intake; sensory satisfaction, fulfilment of expectations,

reason for ending intake, product performance relative to expectations,

hunger and fullness after intake were found highly influential in food

satisfaction. (Barbara Vad Andersen 2015)

Most students had high preferences and satisfaction to the meal

that presented by school canteen. Food consumption patterns of students

become an important factor to promote and ensure proper growth and

development. Students will access proper nutrient offer through a well-

planned that lead the students to actively participate the faculty meal

program. School meal ought to offer enough nutrients and a practical

menu arrange for the physical development and health of students (Hana

M. Elbakoush 2019).

Customer satisfaction is predicted by perceived worth, service

quality, food quality, value fairness, and convenience. Food quality, worth

fairness and convenience indirectly influenced student satisfaction

through the mediation of perceived worth. Following the academics and

social management recommendations were provide for future researchers

and school food service managers to get higher level of student

satisfaction (Huyen Pham 2018).

Satisfaction of school meals varies counting on the standard of

meals, diversity of food hygiene and environment, however the eating
place of school meals is totally different from cafeterias to lecture rooms
and gender of meal eater is different. Service is the most significant issue
to enhance the satisfaction on school meals. We want to look at the
satisfaction on school meals by eating place and gender to enhance the
satisfaction of faculty meal (Kim 2003).

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methods and techniques used by the res

earchers for the study. This chapter also contains the population and

description of the respondents, the statistical tools, and the data

gathering procedure.

RESEARCH DESIGN

In order to see the general picture of the degree of satisfaction of

the foods served in the school canteen among Grade 12 ABM students in

Pasay City South High School, the descriptive method was used.

Descriptive method is defined as a research method that describes

the characteristics of the population or phenomenon that is being

studied. This methodology focuses a lot of on the “what” of

the analysis subject instead of the “why” of the research subject.

According to Porto (2013)

“Descriptive method involves collecting data in order to get the test

hypothesis or to answer the questions concerning the current status of

the study”.
LOCALE STUDY

This study was conducted at the Pasay City South High School since

the chosen respondents are students of the Pasay City South High School.

RESPONDENCE AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES

The researchers asked permission to the teacher in-charge of the

Grade12 ABM students from Pasay City South High School to conduct a

survey, after gaining permission, the researchers conducted a survey to

the students who were randomly chosen to answer the questionnaires.

The researchers then collected the data and analyzed it, after analyzing

the data, the researchers tallied and tabulated the gathered data and

proceeded to interpret.

To get the desired number of respondents, the Slovin’s formula used and

is interpreted as follows:

n = N/(1+Ne2), where n is the sample size, N is the population size and e

is the margin error to be decided by the researcher.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The instrument used in the gathering of data was a survey

questionnaire, the questionnaire has 3 parts consisted of items that

determine the degree of satisfaction of the food served in the school

canteen among Grade 12 ABM students. The sampling technique used by

the researchers was the simple random sampling where the researchers
chose a sample for a study where each individual is chosen entirely by

chance.

COLLECTION OF DATA

In this research we used survey method to collect data on Grade 12

ABM students of Pasay City South High School. The Probability Sampling

which is the simple random sampling that we used was able to help us to

gather data in what the Grade 12 ABM students on Pasay City South High

School react on the satisfactory of the foods served in the school canteen.

ANALYSIS OF DATA

In determining the degree of satisfaction of foods served in the

school canteen among Grade 12 ABM students the Likert scale have been

used.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, so conclusions drawn

from the findings, and the corresponding recommendation.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The study aimed to know the degree of satisfaction of Grade 12

ABM students of the food serve in the school canteen. The study was

designed to use descriptive method through survey questionnaires to get

the insight of Grade 12 ABM students who were selected through simple

random sampling. The researchers had surveyed with the respondents

last September 2019 that yielded the following:

1. The type of foods that the Grade 12 ABM students found that most

of the food in school canteen are the Grow Foods like egg, fish,

chicken and pork.

2. The Grade 12 ABM students are satisfied on the food served in the

canteen as regards to its nutritional value, good for the health of

the students, presentable and clean.

3. Grade 12 ABM students get satisfied in the flavor of the food and

the reasonable price of the food.

CONCLUSIONS

Base on the summary of findings, the following recommendations are

drawn:

1. Foods that Grade 12 ABM students found the most are more on

meat that are rich in protein, vitamin E, and B vitamins this implies

that the canteen offered these foods so students could become

active and smart and would sustain the various activities in school.

2. The Grade 12 ABM students are satisfied on the presentation and

cleanliness of the food that are served by the school canteen, and

also, they are satisfied for the nutritional value of the food they

wanted to eat. This suggests that the level of preparation and

sanitation complied with the student’s “desire”.

3. Based on the result, most of the Grade 12 ABM students see to it

that the food they are buying has a reasonable price for the food
quality and taste. This implies that students are aware of the

appropriate pricing of the foods that are offered in canteen.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Base on the summary of findings, the following recommendations are

drawn:

1. For the students, they should consider the nutritional value of every

food that they are buying.

2. For the school canteen management, they should introduce a new

variety of foods, lower price of the products that they sell, and

serve a healthy meal that attract the students and satisfy them.

3. For future researcher, they should conduct the same study in

different settings and samples.
