STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND FOUNDATION DESIGN FOR 4B+G+20 BUILDING
THESIS PROPSAL
April 15, 2019

Background

Our country is in the process of Development. One of this Developmental fruit is the
Construction of high-rise Buildings at the major cities. A few Decades ago most of the buildings height
was not more than an Average Height, but now a days we are capable of constructing High-rise
buildings. This is considered as an asset and icon for the cities. Although it needs a bunch of engineering
knowledge’s, Geotechnical engineering is one of those professions. This demand causes for great
concern on the future safety of those who use this buildings on their day to day life, regarding to the
load baring capacity of the soil and determination of sufficient foundation condition.

Our planet is created with many nonstop and time dependent Geological changes. Those
changes results heterogeneous soil types with different responses when load is applied on it. Some of
the materials beneath the ground are rock, silt, clay, sand, minerals and alluvial which have different
load baring capacity. That`s why before construction the Geotechnical Engineers are concerned to
assess the ground condition of any construction sites.

Through time Engineers develop a chain of soil test mechanisms and analytical formulas to
determine the baring capacity of any soil type. At the result determining the sufficient foundation type
and size regarding to the given project load. Isolated footing, combined footing, mat foundation are
options for shallow foundations pile foundation is also for deep foundation. The following proposal
outlines for Structural Analysis and Foundation design for 4B+G+20 building located at the capital city,
Addis Ababa.

General Objective

 Compare foundation types on Sandy SILT with Gravel soli layer on Very Dense CLAY soil:
Such as combined, mat and pile footings for 4B+G+20 building by considering all applied
action loads.

Scope of the Research

 The main concern of this thesis is to compare foundation types for 4B+G+20 building and it
focus on today`s solutions with respect to their cohesiveness, unit weight of each soil layers
and water table.
 The design is based on ETABS data output collected from the analysis and with the use of
the new EBCS or Euro Code using SAFE for shallow foundation designs and GEO5 for deep
foundation design.

Methodology

 Create the building model on ETABS for analysis and collect the data some parts might
need hand calculation.

 Perform analyses of the building and know all action Forces that needs to transferred to
the ground.
 Such as: wind load, Earthquake, self weight of the building and Live load
 Based on the soil report determine the baring capacity of the soil. Select appropriate
foundation type and any remedial majors to be taken regarding to the soil type.
 Design the intended foundation by applying any necessary Euro Code also Design the
foundation with the aid of SAFE and Geo5 software’s.
 Determine the size and depth of the foundation without any settlement that can result
any stability issues for the structure.
