Lesson Plan

Modern Physics
SY. 2016-2017

LP NO. 15 August 7, 2017 (Monday)

I. Targets: At the end of the activity, at least 80% of the students should be able to:

1. define what MASER is,

2. differentiate LASER and MASER,
3. cite atleast three uses or application of MASER.

II. Learning Task:

A. Topic/Activity: MASER
B. Concepts:

1. A maser is a device that produces or amplifies a highly intense, coherent

beam of electromagnetic waves, particularly in the microwave region.
Historically, the term came from the acronym "Microwave Amplification
by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." Modern masers, however, emit over a
broad portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Charles H. Townes, who led
the team that developed and built the first maser, therefore suggested
replacing "microwave" with "molecular" in the acronym. When masers were
developed to operate in the optical region, they were initially called optical
masers, but it has become more common to refer to them as lasers, where "l"
stands for "light."

2. Maser generally refers to a device which is used for creation and amplification
of an intense and coherent beam of high frequency radio waves. Laser is
same as the maser, but it specifically applies to infrared or optical
wavelengths only. Laser has evolved from maser. Laser and maser are based
on the concept of stimulated emission introduced by the Einstein. This
concept is described as a process in which an electron moves to a lower
energy due to an interaction with electromagnetic waves.

3. Maser can be use by: satellite communication, air to air communication,

maser in radio telescope, maser is also used in radar technology, and as an
amplifier and ascillator in microwave in those components or equipment
where low noise factor is of the most importance.

C. Skills: Discussing, comparing, classifying, valuing

D. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, Visual Aids, Film Video, Activity &
Assessment papers
E. Reference: Pdf, internet, slideshare

III. Learning Strategies:

A. Daily Routine: Praying, greeting, checking of attendance and cleanliness.

B. Recall : “I’ll pick a name, You’ll pick a number” Inside the container there’s a
name of students written in a small paper and I will shake it and pick one and
he/she will pick a number and answer the question.

QUESTIONS:

1. What device emits light through a process of optical amplification

based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation?
2. What are the three primary components of the laser?
3. What is the acronym for the word LASER?
4. Give atleast one harmful effect of laser.
5. What year was laser invented?
C. Motivation: “Hephep Maser” The class will form (4) groups. Each group should
have 2 representative. The mechanics of the game is also the same in “Hephep
Hooray” but instead of saying hooray they will say “maser”. I will put the
microphone in front of a contestant's face and they are supposed to say "Hep
Hep" while clapping their hands together below their waist, and next I will put the
microphone to another contestant's face and they are to finish the cheer with
saying "MASER" and raising their hands in the air.

D. Lesson Proper

D.1. Pre-Laboratory:
A. Arrange the jumbled words and make it a sentence. Paste the arrange
sentence on the cartolina and explain the sentence or give idea about it.

D.2. Activity Proper: Perform the activity for (3) five minutes by group.

D.3. Post-Laboratory: Presentation of the group’s output. One or two

representative of the group will present their work in front of the class. Each of
them is given 3 minutes to present their work

D.4. Application/Valuing: The students will watch a short video about MASER
and they will give reflection about the video they
watch.
D.5. Generalization: Maser generally refers to a device which is used for creation
and amplification of an intense and coherent beam of
high frequency radio waves. Laser is same as the
maser, but it specifically applies to infrared or optical
wavelengths only. Laser has evolved from maser.
E. Evaluation: Multiple Choices.
