Planning of the Mock IO

Lit text: “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi

Non lit. Work: “One Young World Speech” by Emma Watson

Narrowed Down Global Issue: The increasing oppression of the male dominant world that
causes a fight back from strong women

1-2 minute introduction

What is the summary/description (title of the story, characters involved, setting,

audience, tone, etc) of this particular extract you’ve chosen and why? - background
information.
The literary work I chose is “Persepolis”. The extract of it that I chose is specifically
chapter 5, “The Letter”. Some of the main characters in the extract are Marji, Mehri,
Marji’s parents, and the neighbor. The story develops in Iran, specifically in Marji’s home,
the neighbor’s home and the streets. The audience is targeted accordingly to the rest of
the book. Everyone is welcome to read it, as long as they have a criteria and basic
understanding of the oppression that occured in the middle east during the last century.
The tone during the chapter is variant, but the tone emitted involvesinvolves disparity and
powerfulness.
The non-literary work I chose is the UN speech by Emma Watson, who is a famous actress
turned activist pledged to defend women’s rights and gender equality. The speech took
place at the HeForShe campaign launch at the UN. The audience is the summit, but the
target is everyone, to inform them that the current world situation is not great, and
change is needed. The tone of the speech is hurtful but at the same time encouraging.

Clear and precise connection between both extracts (the literary text and non-lit. text)
and the global issue.
What is your main claim? What would frame your exploration?
Both texts connect to each other well, but their connection to the chosen global issue is
even stronger. Both texts deal with young women with a passion for defending the rights
of their gender and fighting against the oppression of the male world. This is precisely the
issue chosen. A crescent wave of young girls are doing the same to fight the oppression
mentioned in the global issue. The main claim of this presentation is that there is an issue
regarding oppression caused by sexism and the belief that women are the weaker gender,
but also a coming wave of girls and women ready to fight against it, like Marji and Emma,
and that is the same workframe of the presentation, that concept and situation.
3-4-minute analysis of the literary extract zooming in on specific and detailed examples of
the author’s choices in connection to the global issue while also zooming out on the
broader implications in the whole literary work

Main claim/argument for this portion of the IO:

The protagonist of Persepolis is motivated by the situation of her country’s oppression to
women by the government to fight.

Piece(s) of evidence to support the claim/argument:

“But is it her fault that she was born where she was born?
Dad, are you for or against social classes?
When I went back to her room she was crying. We were not in the same social class
but at least we were in the same bed.
When I finally understood the reasons for the revolution I made my decision.
“Tomorrow we are going to demonstrate. “
“We are not allowed!”
“Don't worry! We are going anyway!”
So the next day…
“Take care!”
“Mehri, don't forget to cook her some chicken”
“Yes, madam.”
“See you later!”
“For once she didn't insist on coming with us.”
“There is the demonstration…”
We shouted from morning till night.
“It's late, we have to go home.”
“Yes.”
“Long live the republic!”
“Down with the shah!”
“Good lord, where the devil were you?”
We had demonstrated on the very day we shouldn't have: On “Black Friday”
That day there were so many killed in one of the neighborhoods that a rumor spread
that Israeli soldiers were responsible for the slaughter.
But in fact it was really our own who attacked us. “

Techniques and choices used by the author in the extract

Unpacking of the evidence - Name the formal or technical choice(s) in your evidence and
add your analysis and interpretation of how meaning is created.
The author uses the motive of the oppression that is suffered not just by women but the
whole country to show why Marjane protests with her maid. The meaning which is the
fight against oppression is created, redundantly, by the oppression displayed in the
extract.”

3-4-minute analysis of the non-literary text zooming in on specific and detailed examples
of the author’s choices in connection to the global issue while also zooming out on the
body of work making brief references to other works that are part of the collection.

Main claim/argument for this portion of the IO (you may have more than 1):
Emma Watson fights against sexism and gender inequality motivated by her own
experiences of sexism she has suffered.

Piece(s) of evidence to support the claim/argument:

And now let's turn to a young woman who has chosen to lend her voice to this very
important solidarity movement.
She's a leading British actor, an advocate for gender equality in her own right. She's
been involved with a promotion of girl's education for several years.
As part of her humanitarian efforts she has visited Bangladesh, Zambia.
Recently returned as we just heard from Uruguay on her first mission with UN women.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me in welcoming to this stage our co-host and the UN
Women's Global Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson.
Your Excellencies, UN Secretary General, President of the General Assembly, Executive
Director of UN Women, and distinguished guests.
Today, we are launching a campaign called HeForShe.
I am reaching out to you because we need your help.
We want to end gender inequality, and to do this we need everyone involved.
This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN.
We want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for
change.
And we don't just want to talk about it, we want to try to make sure that its tangible.
I was appointed as Goodwill Ambassador for UN women six months ago.
And the more I've spoken about feminism, the more I have realized that fighting for
women's rights
has too often become synonymous with man hating.
If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.
For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have
equal rights and opportunities.
It is the theory of political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.
I started questioning gender-based assumptions a long time ago.
When I was eight.
I was confused about being called "bossy".
Because, I wanted to direct the plays that we would put on for our parents.
But the boys were not.
When at fourteen, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media.
When at fifteen, my girlfriends started dropping out of their beloved sports teams
because they didn't want to appear "muscle-y".
When at eighteen, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.
I decided that I was a feminist.
And this seemed uncomplicated to me.

Techniques and choices used by the author in the extract

Unpacking of the evidence - Name the formal or technical choice(s) in your evidence and
add your analysis and interpretation of how meaning is created.
Emma Watson includes her own experiences of having suffered sexism to appeal to the
audience’s emotions and feel identified with her cause, but also to justify why she fights.
The meaning of this extract is created by this same justification, unfair experiences Emma
had to undergo just because she and her entourage were women. That's why she fights.

1-2 minutes - Conclusion/Synthesis

Return to the global issue at hand. Why does it matter? Try to synthesize what the
author has done in connection to the global issue. What’s interesting or insightful about
the ways in which he has explored the global issue?
The issue at hand is important because women’s fundamental rights are constantly
violated with this oppression problematic. Both the author of “Persepolis” and Emma
Watson appeal to the emotions of the target audience by opening up about oppressive
and sexist experiences they experimented and the reason they’re fighting for gender
equality. Both experience tellings are moving for the audience and causes them to identify
with the cause, and maybe, inform them more or change their mind regarding this
problem. Let’s not forget Marjane Satrapi’s novel is about her own true experiences. It’s
interesting and quite remarkable that both protagonists of the texts think almost
identically, this being proven by them using the exact same method to get to their
audience.

Return to the techniques and choices used by the author in the extract. How is the
global issue presented in the literary text? Why? Make sure this isn’t just a list of
devices or features!
The literary text presents the global issue in its content by including protests, or
demonstrations in the plot very heavily, also by having a protagonist that feels a lot of
indignity because of the situation and has a wish to fight against it. In the form of the
work, the issue is presented by showing camera angles by the side and above of the
demonstrations, to show how much people there are, which is a lot, fighting and
protesting every day, just goes to show how unhappy people are from the regime’s
oppression not just to women but everyone.

MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE AN ANALYSIS OF THE FORM AND CONTENT OF THE
LIT. WORK – REMEMBER: The key difference between form and content
in literature is that the content is what a text says while the form
is the way of arrangement of the content. In literature, the form
refers to the style and structure of a literary work whereas the
content refers to the plot, characters, setting, and themes.
