Choosing the Right Path

Decisions and choices are the things that set senior high school apart from junior
high school. Graduates have shared that deciding on the strand/track to take is just the
beginning of creating choices. As we move to the next level, more critical choices are
made. Entering Grade 12 marks the next crucial step in life - choosing the curricular exit.
Curricular exits are the paths that learners take after they finish their senior high school.
These exits include higher education, middle level skills development, entrepreneurship,
and employment. The decisions and choices to be made would rely on numerous factors
like the resources and priorities. Senior high school may not be not college yet and not
junior high school, but it is the important period in choosing the right path. - Cindy Sicat,

Grit

Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. One way to think about
grit is to consider what grit isn’t. Grit isn’t talent. Grit isn’t luck. Grit isn’t how
intensely, for the moment, you want something. Instead, grit is about having what some
researchers call an ”ultimate concern”–a goal you care about so much that it organizes
and gives meaning to almost everything you do. And grit is holding steadfast to that
goal. Even when you fall down. Even when you screw up. Even when progress toward
that goal is halting or slow. Talent and luck matter to success. But talent and luck are
no guarantee of grit. And in the very long run, I think grit may matter as least as much,
if not more.

To be gritty is to have passion and perseverance about something in your life.

This doesn’t mean that you necessarily engage in all possible pursuits with equivalent
passion and perseverance. And indeed, the limits of time and energy suggest that
focusing on one thing means focusing less on others. You can’t pursue becoming a
great pianist and at the same time a great mathematician, and a great sprinter, chef and
philosopher…But it’s also true, I think, that to be gritty means to pursue something
with consistency of interest and effort. Some people choose not to pursue anything in a
committed way, and that, to me, is a lack of grit. - Angela Duckworth, 2021

Time Management

The stumbling block is that productivity and creativity demand opposite

attention management strategies. Productivity is fueled by raising attentional filters to
keep unrelated or distracting thoughts out. But creativity is fueled by lowering
attentional filters to let those thoughts in.
How do you get the best of both worlds? In his book “When,” Dan Pink writes
about evidence that your circadian rhythm can help you figure out the right time to do
your productive and creative work. If you’re a morning person, you should do your
analytical work early when you’re at peak alertness; your routine tasks around lunchtime
in your trough; and your creative work in the late afternoon or evening when you’re
more likely to do nonlinear thinking. If you’re more of a night owl, you might be better
off flipping creative projects to your fuzzy mornings and analytical tasks to your
clearest-eyed late afternoon and evening moments. It’s not time management, because
you might spend the same amount of time on the tasks even after you rearrange your
schedule. It’s attention management: You’re noticing the order of tasks that works for
you and adjusting accordingly.
Time management says we should eliminate distractions altogether — not just
interruptions from other people, but also the times when we interrupt ourselves. If
you’re getting sucked into social media, you’d need to stop cold turkey. Attention
management offers an alternative: Be thoughtful about the timing of those distractions.
If you’re trying to be more productive, don’t analyze how you spend your time.
Pay attention to what consumes your attention. Which brings me to one more thought:
I’m pretty sure there’s an eighth habit of highly effective people. They don’t spend all
their time reading about the seven habits of highly effective people.

History of Pampanga

The Kapampangans live in the provinces of Pampanga and some border

towns of Bataan (Dinalupihan and Hermosa) and Tarlac (Bamban, Capas,
Concepcion and Tarlac City). Pampanga, which etymologically means
“Pampang” or riverbank, is bounded on the north by Tarlac City and Nueva Ecija,
on the east by Bulacan, southeast by Manila Bay, on the southwest by Bataan and on
the west by Zambales.

Just like the other ethnolinguistic groups, the Kapampangans have rich
customs and traditions governing the rites of passage. Some of these practices are
still being observed nowadays.

In one of the barrios of Guagua, Pampanga, close relatives of a woman who

is about to deliver a child, together with their neighbor, make noise like shouting,
beating tin cans and exploding firecrackers in order to help expel the fetus faster. In
many Kapampangan houses, the baby’s baptismal dress serves as a souvenir and
decoration for the sala. It is put on a frame and hung in the sala like a picture.

The only prevalent form of courtship now is the pamanhikan, where the
male, with the permission of the parents, is to visit the girl in the latter’s house.
When the agreement is reached between the boy and the girl, the marriage ceremony
is arranged. At present, pamanhikan is being practiced when the parents of the boy
confer with their balae (parent of the bride-to-be) regarding marriage plans of the
children.

Death and burial practices are also unique in Pampanga. The wake
(makipaglame) lasts for at least three days and two nights after which everybody
participates in the libing (interment). As part of the ritual, vigil is observed till the
ninth day after the death of the deceased known as pasiyam (day). On the first death
anniversary, lukas paldas (literally the removing of the dress for mourning) is
