Teaching Toolbox.

A little bit of advice from me to

you.

Level: Beginner.
Purpose: This activity can help in teaching children’s colours. This can be used when
teaching online or in a classroom. It’s a fun activity to get students moving and recognising
the words and colours of each colour taught. They will also have the chance to repeat the
words and thus create memory in their mind.
Preparation: Get a bunch of colours, please keep it simple, preferably the colours of the
rainbow. (do not try and teach complex colour with different shades etc.) With each colour
make separate labels for the names of colours, it has to be separate from the colours so that
it can work in this activity.) But if you want to help your students maybe write each colour
using the colour of the word. For example: red or green and so on.
Procedure: (1) Get the students to sit in a circle or in front of you on the floor is possible.
Away from the desks. If this is online classes then this is not necessary.
(2) Show the colour to the students and get them to say the colour, whether they are
correct or not, proceed by using the word of the colour to get them familiar with the two. (If
you have a board to stick the pair together then that’s great! If not, just handle this like flash
cards.)
(3) After several repetitions. Remove either the colour or the word and show the card to the
students asking: “What colour is this?”
(4) With the correct answer, or incorrect answer you can either, commend them or say “lets
try once more.” Then send them around the class to each collect one thing with this colour.
It can be anything really. They can even point at your shirt if you are wearing such a colour.
To participate with them to, you yourself, find that colour, or to make it wrong find another
colour and when you all regroup show it and ask the children “What colour is this?” They
should chant the colour usually.
(5) You can use this time to show your incorrect colour and ask: “Is this ________________”
“Are you sure____?”
Usually, you will get a few laughs in this.
You can repeat step (4) and (5) till all the colours are complete.
Reminder: These are children so they 1. May be slow to collect things, please be patient
with them. You can hurry them in a fun way, considering how long your lesson is. 2. They
are children but they are not silly or dump. Please treat them with much love and potential.
Help the one who struggle and get the whole class to praise one another, this helps to build
each students esteem individually.
