2 Perception of Colour (Chromatic Sense)

2.2.1 Color Box 1 (table activity)

Material: Colour Box 1 containing six colour tablets of a pair of primary colours, Cloth Mat

Presentation I: Matching and pairing

Maintain work cycle

Invite the child- “Good Morning Jyotika, would you like to do a matching and pairing activity
with colour box 1? Come I will show you where the material is kept. This is the Sensorial
Shelf (point with two right dominant fingers).This is the colour box 1, This is how you
hold it (hold the box with both hands, thumbs on top and fingers below). Would you like
to hold it? Would you like to carry it to the work table?”

Once seated introduce the material (pointing with two right dominant fingers) this is the cloth
mat and this is the colour box 1. Open the box and keep the lid below the box. Pick up a
colour tablet and tell the child “This is a colour tablet and this is how you hold the tablet
(hold with right index finger and thumb).Would you like to hold the tablet?” After the
child has held the tablet say “Today we will do a matching and pairing activity with these
tablets and match some colours. Watch me first and then you may have your turn”

Place the tablets in semi-circular random fashion on the mat around the box, close the box and
keep it on top right corner of the mat. Following directionality bring the left most tablet
to the center of the mat, look for the corresponding colour and place it next to the tablet
in the middle. Trace the tablets with two right dominant fingers; drag the two tablets
together with both hands to the left corner of the mat. Follow the same procedure till all
the tablets are paired. Place the other tablet pairs below each other in vertical line, point
at each tablet with two right dominant fingers. Invite the child to carry out the activity.

After the child has finished the activity reinforce and wind up saying” Today we saw how to
match and pair the colored tablets. Feel free to do this activity any time you want. If you
have any doubt come to me. Shall we wind up now?” Dismantle the pairs with the Childs
help, put them back in the box, close the lid and ask the child to carry it back to the shelf.

Presentation 2, Learning name of colours with 3 period name lesson

Invite the child “Do you remember working with colour box 1 for matching and pairing color
activity? Today we will learn the name of some colours using colour box 1.Come I will show
you where the material is kept. This is the Sensorial Shelf (point with two right dominant
fingers).This is the colour box 1, for this activity we will need a cloth mat too. Will you please
unroll and lay the cloth mat at the work table. Please carry the colour box 1 to the work table
too”

Once seated introduce the material (with two right dominant fingers) “This is the cloth mat and
this is the colour box 1.Today we are going to learn the name of some colours.” Open the
box and take out one tablet of each colour and place them in them in vertical line on right
edge of the mat and close the box.

Period 1-Following directionality bring first colour tablet to the centre of the mat and say and say
“This is Red, can you say red. Can you say it again?”
Place the tablet back in the vertical line. Follow the same introduction by bringing the blue and
yellow tablet one by one then place them back in the vertical line.

Period 2- Following directionality place the tablets in centre of the mat in horizontal line.
Randomly ask the child to point at any colour.
“Can you point and show me Blue?” Repeat the same with the other two colours too.

Period 3- Place the back in vertical line following directionality. Randomly pick one colour
tablet and place it centre of the mat. Ask the child “Can you tell me what colour is this?”
After the child answers place the colour tablet back in the box and bring out the other two
colours and ask the same.

Reinforce and wind up saying “ Jyotika Today we learnt names of some colours which
are…”.Point to the colors one by one and let the child say the name. “We will learn the
name of some more colours some other day. Would you like to put back red back in the
box” Repeat the same with other two colours too. Close the box and tell the child to take
it back to the shelf.

Variations: memory game, sequencing, distribute tablets in groups and make them match pairs.
