It is assumed that you will be using virtual machines for the class.
Required Software to build your own VM
• Microsoft Server 2012R2 64 bit with GUI
• SQL Server 2014 Enterprise or Developer 64 bit with latest updates
• SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2012 https://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?id=36843
• Excel 2016 Professional or Higher
• Microsoft Power BI Desktop
• Course Lab Files
• Course PowerPoints
• Backup Database Files

Detailed Steps if not using our VM


Preparation
1. Download the following:
1.1. Course Lab Files
1.2. Course PowerPoints
1.3. Backup Database Files
2. If necessary, on your PC, install WinRar, which is free for decompression of files.
3. Decompress the files to an available location.

In Hyper-V manager
Configure the Virtual Machine
1.1. Click Tools Hyper-V Manager.
1.2. Under Actions, click Virtual Switch Manager.
1.3. Select New virtual network switch.
1.4. Select External.
1.5. Click Create Virtual Switch.
1.6. Name the switch External (or whatever you prefer).
1.7. Make sure it is connected to the External network and that your physical Network Interface
Card shows in the radio button box.
1.8. Place a check in the Allow Management operating system ….
1.9. Click OK.
1.10. Click Yes if you get a pop up.
1.11. Click Apply.
1.12. Close the Dialog box.
1.13. In Hyper-V manager, right-click on the name of your server and select New>>Virtual
Machine.
1.14. In the wizard, click Next.
1.15. Name the virtual Machine “752548”
1.16. Leave the default storage location or browse to where you want it stored.
1.17. Click Next.
1.18. Set the memory to 8000.
1.19. Do not select dynamic memory checkbox.
1.20. Click Next.

1.21. Change the connection to your External adapter.


1.22. Click Next.
1.23. Change the size of the virtual hard disk to 60GB.
1.24. Click Next.
1.25. In the Installation Options, move the Radio Button to Install as operating system… .
1.26. Change the radio button to Image file and navigate to your image of Server 2012R2.
(Evaluation software will suffice for the course.)
1.27. Click Next.
1.28. Click Finish.
1.29. In Hyper-V manager, select your new virtual Machine. Right-click and select Settings.
1.30. Move to the Processor tab.
1.31. Change the number of virtual processors to 4.
1.32. Click Apply.
1.33. Click OK.
Configure Server 2012 R2
2.1. In Hyper-V Manager, select your virtual machine.
2.2. Right-click and Start.
2.3. Switch to the Virtual Machine.
2.4. Click Next.
2.5. Click Install Now.
2.6. Select Standard with a GUI.
2.7. Click Next.
2.8. Accept the License.
2.9. Click Next.
2.10. Click Custom.
2.11. Click Next.
2.12. Enter and confirm password as Passw0rd with 0 as zero.
2.13. Click Finish.
2.14. Log on as Administrator.
2.15. In Server Manager, move to the Local Server.
2.16. Click the hyperlink next to Remote Desktop.
2.17. Move the radio button to Allow.
2.18. Click OK at the pop-up.
2.19. Click OK.
2.20. Click the hyperlink next to Windows Firewall.
2.21. Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
2.22. Change the radio buttons to Turn off for both private and public.
2.23. Click OK.
2.24. Close the Windows Firewall dialog box.
2.25. Click the hyperlink next to Internet Explorer enhanced security.
2.26. Move both radio buttons to off.
2.27. Click OK.
2.28. Click Tools>> Computer Management.
2.29. Expand Local Users and Groups.
2.30. Double-click the Users folder.
2.31. Right-click and Add new User.
a. User name is Student

b. Password is Passw0rd
c. Clear the checkbox User must change….
d. Check Password never expires.
e. Click Create.
f. Click Close.
2.32. Move to the Groups folder.
g. Right click Administrators and select Add to Group.
h. Click Add.
i. Enter Student.
j. Click Check Names.
k. Click OK.
l. Click Apply.
m. Click OK to close the dialog box.
2.33. Close Computer Management.
2.34. In Server Manager, click the computer name.
2.35. Click Change.
2.36. Change the name to StudentServer (no spaces).
2.37. In the pop-up, click OK.
2.38. In System Properties, click OK.
2.39. Click Restart now.
2.40. Log on as Student.
2.41. In Server Manager, move to the Local server.
2.42. Click Manage >> Add Roles and Features.
n. Click Next three times.
o. Check Application server.
p. Check Web Server.
q. Click Add features in the pop-up.
r. Click Next.
s. Check Net Framework 3.5.
t. Expand User Interfaces and Infrastructure.
u. Check Desktop Experience.
v. Click Add features at the Popup.
w. Click Next through to install.
x. Place a check in the Restart box.
y. Click Yes at the popup.
z. Click Install.
aa. Log on as Student.
bb. After installation completes, click close.
2.43. In Server Manager, move to the Local server.
2.44. Click the hyperlink next to Windows Update.
2.45. Select Never check for update.
2.46. Next step is optional:
a. Click the link Check for updates.
b. Click Install Updates (depending on your network speed, this may take over an hour or
more).
c. On completion, restart.

d. Log on as Student.
2.47. Switch to Hyper-V Manager on your host Server.
2.48. Select your VM.
2.49. Right-click and select Settings.
2.50. Move to the IDC Controller.
2.51. Browse to your image file of SQL 2014 Enterprise or Developer 64 bit.
2.52. (Evaluation software will suffice.)
2.53. Click Apply.
2.54. Switch back to your VM.
Install SQL Server 2014 Enterprise 64 bit
3.1. Open the D:\ drive and double-click Setup.exe.
3.2. Click the Installation hyperlink.
3.3. Click New.
3.4. Use either evaluation or select your license and click next.
3.5. Accept the license and click Next.
3.6. On the Microsoft Update page, click Next.
3.7. On the Setup Role page click Next.
3.8. In the Feature Selection, check:
3.8.1. Database Engine Service
3.8.2. Analysis Services
3.8.3. Reporting Service Native
3.9. Under Share Features, select:
3.9.1. Integration services
3.9.2. Management Tools Complete
3.10. Click Next.
3.11. On Installation Configuration, click Next.
3.12. On Server Configuration, click Next.
3.13. On Database Engine Configuration:
3.13.1. Click Add current user.
3.13.2. Move the radio button to Mixed Mode
3.13.3. For password enter and confirm Passw0rd
3.13.4. Click Next.
3.13.5. In Analysis Server, click Add Current User.
3.13.6. Click Next.
3.13.7. On Reporting Services Configuration, click Next.
3.13.8. Click Install.
3.14. Restart the installation wizard.
3.14.1. Go through the same process but only select Analysis Services.
3.14.2. Name the instance Tabular
3.14.3. Add the current user.
3.14.4. On completion, close the installation wizard.
3.14.5. Copy the database backup files, AdventureWorks2014.bak and
AdventureWorksDW2014.bak, to the c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER\backup folder.

3.14.6. Copy the Tabular database backup file, AW Tabular Model SQL 2014.abf, to the
c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS12.Tabular\OLAP\backup folder.
3.14.7. Copy the Multidimensional database backup file,
AdventureWorksDW2014Multidimensional-EE.ABF, to the c:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS12.MSSQLSERVER\OLAP\backup folder.
3.14.8. Press the Windows key.
3.14.9. Type SQL Server Management Studio
3.14.10. Click on the App and select it.
3.14.11. Close SQL server Management Studio.
3.14.12. Again type SQL Server Management Studio
3.14.13. In the list, select it and right-click and select Pin to task bar.
3.14.14. Switch back to your desktop.
3.14.15. In the taskbar, start SQL Server Management Studio.
3.14.16. Connect to the Database Engine.
3.14.17. In Object Explorer, right-click the Database folder and select Restore.
3.14.18. Move the radio button to device.
3.14.19. Click the ellipses.
3.14.20. Click Add.
3.14.21. Select the first of the two backup files.
3.14.22. Click OK three times.
3.14.23. On completion, click OK in the pop-up.
3.14.24. Repeat for the other database.
3.14.25. Connect into Analysis Services.
3.14.26. Move to the Database folder.
3.14.27. Right-click and select restore.
3.14.28. Click Browse.
3.14.29. Move to the top address and expand.
3.14.30. Select the AdventureWorksDW2014Multidimensional-EE file.
3.14.31. Click OK.
3.14.32. Connect into Analysis Services\Tabular.
3.14.33. Move to the Database folder.
3.14.34. Right-click and select restore.
3.14.35. Click Browse.
3.14.36. Move to the top address and expand.
3.14.37. Select the Tabular file.
3.14.38. Click OK.
3.14.39. In Object Explorer, verify all databases are present.
3.14.40. Pin SQL server Management Studio to task bar.
3.15. Download and Install SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2012

3.16. After installation, pin to task bar.
3.17. Install Excel 2016 Professional or higher.
3.18. Download and install Chrome browser.
3.19. Download and install PowerBI Desktop.

Install other files


4.1. Copy the course lab files.
4.1.1. Create a folder Lab Files.
4.1.2. Copy the lab files into this folder.
