OKP for the preparation of sodium thiosulphate & Its standardization

Process Description Method Information. Machine TG:N/A Reference Number: Dept. Name & Rev. No. 00
OKP for the preparation of ASTM E200 Calibration Number: Section SOP Source:
sodium thiosulphate & Its Quality Control/IQC
standardization Chemical

Operational Key Point

Sodium thiosulphate Solution preparation:
1. Take about 100 ml of water in a cleaned & dried 1000 ml Volumetric flask.
2. Add about 25 gm of Sodium thiosulphate pentahydrate with continues stirring & add more about 700 ml of water
mix.
3.Add 0.11 g of sodium carbonate & make up the volume 1000 ml with water. Mix the solution throughly & keep
the solution for at least 24 hour & then carry out the standardization.
Standardization Procedure:
1) Weigh accurately 0.21 ± 0.01 g of the dried potassium dichromate (Previously dried at 120 ◦C for about 4 hours).
2) Transfer it in a cleaned & dried 500 ml glass- stoppered conical flask & add 100 ml of water , swirl to dissolve
,remove the stopper & quickly add 3g KI,2g of NaHCO3 & 5 ml HCl.Stopper the flask quickly , swirl to ensure
mixing, and let stand in the dark 10 min.
3) After 10 min. rinse the stopper & inner walls of the flask with water.
4)Titrate with the Na2SO3 solution until the solution is yellowish green.
5)Add 2 ml of starch solution (10g/L), and continue the titration to the disappearance of the blue color..
Calculation :Calculate the normality of the Na2SO3 solution as follows:
A =B/0.04904V
Where,
A=Normality of the Na2SO3 solution
B=grams of K2Cr2O7 used
V= ML of Na2SO3 solution consumed.
Stability: Restandardize Weekly.

1. Control the room temperature At 25°C .

2. Use safety Mask when chemical is Used.
3. Put on Hand Gloves when clean & chemical used in laboratory.
4. Read and understand all the instructions mentioned in the process manual before the test.
