Technology is the key to making our lives better due to its well-on effects and big help
towards our advancement, but we can’t deny the fact that although it is beneficial to
humans, it has this negative impact not just to us but also to the environment. Sure,
present-day innovations and technologies had helped us advance and make our
everyday living easier, but the speed progress leaves a brief period to evaluate the full
effect of what current innovation has on human existence. For instance, advanced
mobile phones furnished with all types of correspondence have drastically modified how
we associate with one another, we can associate with people without really being close
to them. Although it is beneficial to our current situation with the COVID-19 virus and all,
but I still think human interaction through face to face will help us become better in the
society and the technological advancements hinders that progress.

Activity 3.
Technological Advancement: An Advantage or a Disadvantage?

Technology is the key to making our lives better due to its well-on effects and big help
towards our advancement and it is being integrated into everyone’s daily life, but in time this
advancement has subtly destroyed meaningful connections and social interactions. We can’t
deny the fact that although it is beneficial to humans and it paved the way for making our lives
easier, it still has this negative impact on us and every aspect in our life.

While some forms of technology may have made positive changes in the world, there is
evidence for the negative effects of technology and its overuse, as well. Sure, present-day
innovations and technologies had helped us advance and make our everyday living easier, but
the speed progress leaves a brief period to evaluate the full effect of what current innovation
has on human existence. For instance, advanced mobile phones furnished with all types of
correspondence have drastically modified how we associate with one another, we can associate
with people without really being close to them. Although it is beneficial to our current situation
with the COVID-19 virus and all, but I still think human interaction through face to face will help
us become better in the society and the technological advancements hinders that progress.
Technology for instance, when overused has so many drastic effects like increased
isolation, reduced social interaction and social skills, and increased human-to-machine
interactions which has created a wall between many people globally. Also, being overly
connected to technology can have a large impact on our mental and physical health, this can
cause psychological issues such as distraction, narcissism, depression and negative
repercussions like hearing loss, vision problems and numerous effects that may be irreversible.

So you see, technology may have improved every aspect of our lives and progressed
our way of living, but the overuse and improper use of technology can cause a large negative
effect on us and on our daily living, so choose to create a healthier environment for the
wellbeing of our mental and physical self and implement the right usage of these technological
advancements. Always remember, technology is only good in moderation.

Number of persons who agreed - 3

Number of persons who disagreed- 1

1. Many agreed because I presented my opinions with factual data and

support from authors and other references. I think that the reason why
someone disagreed is because everyone is different, we have different
stances, ideas, opinions, and etc. about certain topics, and this affects how
we view something, if we agree or disagree. I also think that the reason
why someone disagreed is because my written work is not very convincing
for him because he has his own views about technology.
2. By enforcing strong opinions, factual data, references, and by not being
biased on my written works.

Activity 4.
Paragraph 1.
Main Idea: Information technology influences the way many of us live and work today.
Details: We use the internet to look and apply for jobs, shop, conduct research, make
airline reservations, and explore areas of interest. We use E-mail and internet to
communicate instantaneously with friends and business associates around the world.
Computers are commonplace in homes and the workplace.

Paragraph 2.
Main Idea: Although the number of internet users are growing exponentially each year,
most of the world’s population do not have access to computers or the internet.
Details: Only 6 percent of the population in the developing countries are connected to
telephones.

Paragraph 3.
Main Idea: A problem that exacerbates these disparities is that African- American,
Latinos, and Native Americans hold few of the jobs in information technology.
Details: Women about 20 percent of these jobs and receiving fewer than 30 percent of
the Bachelor’s degrees in computer and information science. The result is that women
and members of the most oppressed ethnic group are not eligible for the jobs with the
highest salaries at graduation. Baccalaureate candidates with degree in computer
science were offered the highest salaries of all new college graduates.

Paragraph 4.
Main Idea: The higher percentage of the schools with more affluent students have
wired classrooms than those with high-concentrations of low-income students.
Details: Ninety-eight percent of schools in the country are wired with at least one
internet connection. The number of classrooms with internet connection differs by the
income level of students. Using the percentage of students who are eligible for free
lunches at a school to determine income level.

Paragraph 5.
Main Idea: Access to computers and the internet will be important in reducing
disparities between groups.
Details: It will require higher equality across diverse groups whose members develop
knowledge and skills in computer and information technologies. The field today is
overrepresented by white males. If computers and the internet are to be used to
promote equality, they have to become accessible to schools cannot currently afford the
equipment which needs to be updated regularly every three years or so. However,
access alone is not enough; Students will have to be interacting with the technology in
authentic settings. As technology has become a tool for learning in almost all courses
taken by students, it will be seen as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. If it
is used in culturally relevant ways, all students can benefit from its power.

What I Learned
Lesson: The lesson is all about the approaches in literary criticism, and it has taught
me how to express my opinions by writing a reaction paper. I also learned the tips on
how to write a good reaction paper, we must support our opinions with facts so that the
readers will agree with our views.
What I Want to Say About the Lesson: I want to say that the lesson is quite
challenging to answer, but it is a great way to improve my writing skills.
What I Found Out: I found out that this lesson will teach you the appropriate language,
manner, and critical approaches in writing views. I also found out that having knowledge
on how to write a reaction paper and expressing your opinion is important.

What I Can Do
Outline:

I. Introduction
A. Information technology influences the way many of us live and work today.
1. We use internet to look and apply for jobs, shop, conduct research,
make airline, reservations, and explore areas of interest.
2. We use E- mail and internet to communicate instantaneously with
friends and business associates around the world.
B. Although the number of internet users is growing exponentially each year,
most of the world’s population do not have access to computers of the
internet.
1. Only 6 percent of the population in the developing countries are
connected to telephones.
2. Only 56 percent has personal computers at home and 50 percent has
internet access.
3. On some Native American reservations only 60 percent of the
residents have a telephone.
II. Body
A. The digital divide between the populations who have access to the internet
and information technology tools and those who don’t is based on income, race,
education, household type, and geographic location.
1. Eighty-five percent of households with an income over $75,000 have
internet access, compared with less than 20 percent of the households
with income under $15,000. Over 80 percent of college graduates’ use
the internet as compared with 40 percent of high school completers
and 13 percent of high school dropouts. Seventy-two percent of
household with two parents have internet access; 40 percent of
female, single parent households do.
2. Differences are also found among households and families from
different racial and ethnic groups. Fifty-five percent of white
households, 31 percent of black households, 32 percent of Latino
households, 68 percent of Asian or Pacific Islander households, and
39 percent of American Indian, Eskimos, or Aleut households have
access to the internet.
B. Another problem that exacerbates these disparities is that African-American,
Latinos, and Native Americans hold few of the jobs in information technology.
1. Women about 20 percent of these jobs and receiving fewer than 30

III. Conclusion
A. Technology affects the way individuals communicate, learn and think. It
helps society and determine how people interact with each other on daily
basis such as education, workplace, at home and in society. Despite of
technology booming in other countries, many developing countries suffer
from the lack of productivity of labor and education about technology
which can be seen as unskilled labor force is the most important reason
and failure of the transfer of technology.

The Digital Divide: The Challenge of Technology and Equity

1. No, because it is informal. It is inappropriate for a student to talk to his/her teacher
like that because it lacks respect and politeness.
2. The student should use a more formal language to show respect to his/her teachers.

also consider the person we are communicating with and the situation we are put in.

Activity 3.
Teenage Pregnancy

Teenage pregnancy is one of the biggest problem teenagers under the age of
twenty, face today. As sexual development sets in, teenagers are hounded by curiosity
to explore their bodies. Due to a lack of awareness regarding sex, they often engage in
unsafe sex, eventually becoming teenage parents. This alone has caused the rise of
teenage pregnancies at an alarming rate and the repercussions of their actions often
lead to negative and damaging effects.

According to a website, teenage pregnancies are often a product of economic

disadvantage, poverty, lack of social awareness, inadequate educational systems,
familial instability, emotional deprivation and so much more. People living on the edge
of poverty are more likely to get pregnant because of the little or no sex education
enforced upon them. Mostly such pregnancies are unplanned, and minors are not ready
to bear the responsibilities of being a parent. Globally, the rate of teenage pregnancy is
relatively high. Most cases are reported from the United States, the United Kingdom,
and Africa, whereas rates are comparatively lower in Asia. As per studies, it is seen that
the quality of teenage pregnancy is higher in developing countries as compared to
developed countries, and mostly rural areas report higher cases than urban areas. This
shows that the socio-economic background of teenagers majorly contributes to teenage
pregnancies. Mostly teenagers from lower backgrounds with little or no sex education
end up with teenage pregnancies. Another reason is a discussion regarding sex being a
taboo. Often conservative parents and even teachers in schools don’t engage in sexual
conversations. As a result, teenagers lack basic knowledge about sex or safe sexual
practices. The lack of resources on sexual awareness leads teenagers to seek help
from their peers that eventually leads them to have wrong notions about sex. Teenagers
barely understand the issues regarding sexual intercourse and the use of
contraceptives. A study in the United States reveals that about 53% of teenagers lack
information regarding sexual intercourse and contraceptives. The glorification of sex in
mainstream media is another reason why most teenagers lack the moral outlook that
prevents them from engaging in irresponsible sexual activities. Often teenagers seeking
social validation from their peers engage in drinking resulting in them losing their senses
and eventually engaging in unsafe sex that may lead to an irreversible action.

That’s why I encourage everybody to take revolutionary steps to restrain growing

numbers of teenage pregnancies in the country in order to maintain a healthy, happy,
and peaceful society. I also want to encourage the youth to think before you act, to
evaluate your actions and foresee the consequences that comes with it. Pregnancy is
not a joke, you are bringing a life into this world and you are responsible for that child’s
wellbeing. That’s why we need to evaluate and make a stand in making a change for
our children, because the children are our future.

Activity 4.
1. Based on their comments, they liked my views about teenage pregnancy because it
is written in formal language appropriately. They find my written work very informative
and relevant to our current situation, because the need to exterminate or lessen this
problem is very evident in the text without sounding off as rude or to ridicule people who
have experienced teenage pregnancies.
2. Their comments were mostly praises and compliments about how I written the topic
beautifully and how I addressed the issue without coming off as rude. This made me
feel happy and accomplished because I written the text appropriately, I feel like I did
good for once.

Activity 5.
WORDS MEANINGS FROM DICTIONARY

1. Cynic A person who believes that people are motivated purely by

self-interest rather than acting for honourable or unselfish
reasons.
2. Demoralize Cause someone to lose confidence or hope.

3. Destabilize To cause to be unable to be unable to continue.

4. Anarchic With no controlling rules or principles to give order.

5. Unrelentingly Not slowing down, stopping or growing weak.

6. Chronic disease Continuing or occurring again and again for a long time.

7. Callous Showing or having insensitive and cruel disregard for others.

8. Predominant Present as the strongest or main element

9. Transcend Be or go beyond the normal limits

10. Authentic Real or genuine

11. Vigorously Healthy and strong

Main idea 1: It has been said that truest motto of our people is “K. K. K”. No, not
Katipunan, shaping unity out of our diversity.
Details: But rather: Kanya-Kanya’ng Katwiran, Kanya-Kanya’ng Kagustuhan, Kanya-
Kanya’ng Kabig (or worse) Kanya-Kanya’ng Kurakot...
Cynics among us say that K.K.K is the definition of our national character, the
predominant strain in our national culture. It’s what we are when we are “most natural”,
most ourselves. “Bayan muna, Bago ang Sarili” is an abstract, non-operative ideal, good
for speeches, good for posters, goo for classroom rhetoric but not for real, notfor real
life. For real is K.K.K.
Main idea 2: Ninoy himself said: “We must criticize in order to be free, because we are
free only when we criticized.”
Details: We may not, at our own peril, forget that. But we must remind ourselves that
criticism is not an end in itself; it is not the absolute. It is meant to help us to become
free, but if it becomes the all-encompassing output of our days, a way of life... so it
takes up most of our energy, most of our time, when we begin to take delight in tearing
down, demoralizing, destabilizing; when we are at each other’s throats all day long,
then we really are engaged in self-destruction, and the destruction of hope, the creation
of despair, especially among the poor who continue to suffer in our midst.
Main idea 3: When Ninoy spoke to of “the quest for that elusive national unity which is
imperative for the nation’s survival”- he said “survival. He meant “survival”.
Details: How can we survive, as a nation and as a people, if we have made the name of
our national game as anarchic free-for-all in a “basket of crabs?” K.K.K also means, we
are told, Kanya Kanyang Kabig, Kanya- Kanyang Kurakot. Surely, I don’t need to dwell
on this theme this morning. For weeks, the papers, radios, TV, have shouted nothing
else. It is the talk of the marketplace. I myself have spoken, often enough, of the 40 big
thieves left behind in our midst, and many many smaller ones which might include . . .
even ourselves? Who among us did not re-echo the sentiments and the work of the
beloved Chino Roces when he asked for a renewed moral order in government and
society? It is a problem which must be addressed, and addressed vigorously and
unrelentingly.
Main idea 4: If all we do is talk and talk, and throw dirt at each other-forgetting to mind
the ship and its engines, and steer it in mine-filled waters-why, we will still be taking and
quarrelling when our ship goes down into the sea!
Details: We must begin, rather, where we can begin, with ourselves we must ask: What
can we do about it? What in our own heart, in our own attitudes, in our own practices,
must be changed? What sacrifices must we ourselves do to make a positive
contribution of deeds, to put under control this chronic illness in our society, and in our
culture?

1. No, because there are words used in the text that is beyond my comprehension,
some phrases don’t seem to make sense to me and words that were used were clearly
not intended for students.
2. I think the author used the “Marxist Criticism” as a critical approach because the text
focuses on the economic and political elements of art, emphasizing the ideological
content of literature, and because it is evaluative and judgmental.
3. I agree with the author, as true citizens of our country we should put the Nation first
before ourselves, and that if we set aside our differences and helped in doing our
responsibility as citizens, we could have marked a beginning and end to the disruption
of humanity.

What I Learned
Lesson- The lesson is all about the different critical approaches that we can use in
expressing our views
What I Want to Say About the Lesson- I want to say that the lesson is challenging
and hard to understand but in a good way because it helped me develop my writing
skills.
What I Found Out- I found out that having knowledge about the different critical
approaches is very important, because we can express our views in an organized and
proper way so that people would regard the text as accurate and understandable.

What I Can Do
Homily
According to YourDictionary homily is a speech or sermon given by a priest in a
Roman Carholic Church after a scripture has been read. The purpose of the homily is to
provide insight into the meaning of the scripture and relate it to the lives of the
parishioners of the church. A homily may also be a long speech given by a lay person to
teach a moral lesson.

Additional Activities
After doing the activities:
I noticed that I can now write a good reaction paper by reinforcing the learning I have
gathered through the module.
A question I have is how can students like me apply the learnings from this module to
our daily lives
I wonder why having knowledge about approaches in literary criticism is important in
our daily lives
It seems like my writing skills have improved after doing the activities in this module.
I’m not sure about my answers in the modules, some may be correct but I know some
needs improvement and further explanations from teachers.
I realized that it is very important to use appropriate languages when we are writing so
that our readers can easily comprehend our written work.
I discovered that there are different critical approaches that you can apply when
making a critique and you need also to apply the appropriate critical approach in your
critique.
