Scalar quantities

A physical quantity is something that can be measured. Scalar quantities only have a magnitude or size.

Speed

 Speed is a way of measuring how quickly something is moving or being done

 Formula
Speed = distance ÷ time.
Speed= meters ÷ second

It takes a fast swimmer about 25 seconds to complete a 50 meters freestyle. What is the speed
of the swimmer?

Given:
Distance: 50 m.
Time: 25s.

Solution:
S= D/T
=50m/25s
= 2 m/s

Volume

 Volume refers to the amount of space the object takes up.

 Formula

Volume = mass ÷ density

A bottle is filled with 2 kg of olive oil which has a density of 0.925 g/cm³. What is the volume of the olive
oil to the nearest cm³?

Given

Mass: 2kg

Density:0.952 g/cm³

Solution

V = M/D

= 2000/0.952

=2162cm³
Density

 Density is a measure of how tightly the mass of an object is packed into the space it takes
up.
 Formula:
Density =mass/volume

A concrete block weighing 2460 kg has a volume of 1.2 m³. What is the density of the block?

Given

Mass:2460 kg
Volume: 1.2 m³

Solution

D = M/ V

=2460kg/1.2m³

= 2050 kg/m³

Time
 The measured or measurable period during which an action, process, or condition
exists or continues
 Formula
Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Victor covers 210 km by car at a speed of 70 km/hr. find the time taken to cover this distance.

Given
Distance:210km
Speed:70km/hr.

Solution.

T= D/ S
=210km/70km/hr.
=3 hours
Work
 Work is the measure of energy transfer that occurs when an object is moved over a
distance by an external force at least part of which is applied in the direction of the
displacement.
 Formula
Work = Force × Distance.
Work(joule) = Newtons × meters

A body builder lifts a 1600 N barbell over his head and is lifted to a height of 2.0 meters. How much work
has he done?

Given

Force: 1600 N

Distance: 2.0 m.

Solution.

W= F×D
= 1600 N × 2.0 m.
= 3200 m = 3200J
