CHAPTER I󠇖

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Studies

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is responsible for more fatalities than the SARS coronavirus,
despite being in the initial stage of a global pandemic. The first suspected case in the Philippines
was investigated on January 22, 2020, and 633 suspected cases were reported as of March 1.
According to Inquire.Net (03/12/21) It has been a year since the Philippines recorded its first
case of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and yet the country still continues to
grapple with SARS Cov2, the virus that causes it. Just recently Manila and its surrounding
provinces were put back under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the highest tier in its
containment protocols, for the first time since May 2020 to try to quell the surge in cases.

The Philippines economy hast taken a sharp turn due to the increase of cases just this mid-March
of 2021 and has expected to constrain the pace of economic recovery as major cities and
province are imposing stricter pandemic controls to quell the rising number of cases being
reported from around the country.

Having been in deep recession last year on 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,
the Philippines GDP contracted a by 9.6% year-on-year. This was reported as the largest annual
decline ever recorded since National Accounts data series for the Philippines commenced in
1946.

According to an article on Rappler.com, because the Philippines had the deepest contraction
among large, developing ASEAN economies last year, its inability to contain the spread of
coronavirus slows the return of aggregate output to its 2019 peak: nominal GDP (gross domestic
product) in 2020 amounted to P18 trillion ($362.9 billion), 7.9% lower than P19.5 trillion
($377.1 billion) in 2019. But fortunately, there was a hint of a silver lining present. When the
pandemic hit, many Filipinos found their hope online. Many Filipinos, including those who lost
jobs because of the lockdowns, put up online businesses.

Last year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) estimated that 73,276 online businesses
registered during the pandemic between March 16 and August 31, the height of the lockdowns.
While the pandemic reversed the gains in poverty reduction, it also highlighted the growth
opportunities offered by digitalization.

In a recent article it has been shown that e-commerce accelerated a great percent during the
pandemic. Companies are becoming more digitalized by increasing their online support and e-
commerce transactions. Many Filipinos are also seeing the advantages of increasing their online
transactions. The e-Conomy SEA Report 2020 said the Philippines is one of three Southeast
Asian countries that saw a rise in digital consumers from the rural areas. Majority of new e-
commerce users in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines came from non-metro locations. It
has helped small and medium enterprises cope with the decline in consumption spending and
limited mobility restrictions that kept them away from their clients and consumers. It has also
helped unemployed Filipinos make ends meet when they lost their jobs.

Statement of the Problem

A descriptive study on the State of Online Businesses under the growing number
of Covid-19 cases.

Specific Objectives:

A. Aims to accurately and systematically describe the situation of Online

Businesses amidst the rising Covid-19 cases.
B. Aimed to casting light on current issues of online businesses as we see a surge
of rising Covid-19 cases through the process of data collection that enables to
describe the situation more completely.

Significance of the Study

Conducting this study will help inform and educate readers on the state of the Philippines
Online Businesses as cases of Covid-19 continue to rise. Providing a holistic understanding of
the situation while also bringing awareness to the readers on the impact it may have to our
economy and to our families. The data collection is fast and easy and requires little to no expense
and provides information on the current situation therefore providing accurate and reliable data.
Scope and Limitations

This study is to only describe the phenomenon or situation studied. This methodology
focuses more on the “what” of the research subject than the “why” of the research subject.

Definition of terms

For purpose of clarification, the following key terms are hereby defined:

Covid-19 – Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly

discovered coronavirus. Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to
moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and
those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory
disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

SARS Cov2 – Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the virus that
causes COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), the respiratory illness responsible for the COVID-
19 pandemic.

ECQ  The enhanced community quarantine in Luzon is a series of stay-at-home orders and
cordon sanitaire measures implemented by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious
Diseases.
