1. Some say that brisk walking is a good way of
exercising all parts of your body.

Adjectives change in form when used in comparing
objects, people, or things. These are degrees in
comparison; positive, comparative and superlative
degrees.

In the first sentence, the word good is used to modify

the word way no comparison made. The adjectives is in
the comparative degree.

In the second sentence, the adjective better shows

comparison between swimming and brisk walking. The
objective is in the comparative degree.

In the third sentence, the adjective best is used to

compare weightlifting with all the other kinds of
exercise. When three or more items are compared, and
one of them is singled out as having the best or the
worst quality, the superlative degrees is used.

We form the comparative degree of many one- or two-

syllable adjectives by adding -er and their superlative
by adding -est.

Examples:

POSITIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE

dark darker darkest
fast faster fastest
big bigger biggest
bright brighter brightest

We form the comparative and the superlative forms of

many two syllable or multisyllabic adjectives by
adding more and most to their positive forms.

Examples:
POSITIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE
intelligent more intelligent most intelligent
fast more diligent most diligent
big more successful most successful
bright more approachable most
approachable
We form the comparative and the superlative degrees
of irregular adjectives by changing their spelling.

POSITIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE

good better best
ill worse worst
many more most
far farther farthest

Some adjectives, such as correct, round, perfect eternal,

straight and open, do not have comparative or
superlative degree forms.
To make comparisons between two things that are
equal and similar in proportion, we use the structure
as…as
Examples:
The improvement observed in the new ballerina is as
great as the senior ballerinas.
This year, my dad’s company prepared as much food
for its employees as last year.
Her youngest daughter is as beautiful as the eldest.

When making comparisons between things that are not

equal in proportion, use the structure not as…, as, not
quite as…. or not early as…as

Examples:
My mom is not as strict as my dad.
The subject chemistry is not quite as easy as biology
Hiking was good but not as difficult as Triathlon
My new school shoes are not nearly as comfortable
as my old one.

When making comparisons referring to quantity, use as

much as with uncountable nouns and as many as to
refer to large number of something and plural nouns.
Examples:

There were as many as 300 students in the conference

prepared by the guidance counselor.
The farmers were able to harvest as much corn as they
could before the rainy season.
Teenagers of today want as much freedom as adults
have.
