ACTIVITY 6. THE LANGUAGE OF RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS

Do what is asked in the problem.

1. Let A= {2,3,4} and 𝐵= {6,8,10} and define a relation R from A to B as follows: For
all (𝑥,𝑦)∈𝐴×𝐵,

(𝑥,𝑦)∈𝑅 means that 𝑦𝑥 is an integer

a) Is 4𝑅6? NO

Is 4R8? YES

Is (3,8)∈𝑅? NO

Is (2,10)∈𝑅? YES

b) Write R as a set of ordered pairs. R= {(2,6), (3,6), (2,8), (4,8), (2,10)}

c) Write the domain and co-domain of R. DOMAIN= {2,3,4} ; CO-DOMAIN= {6,8,10}

d) Draw an arrow diagram for R.

2. Let 𝐸= {1,2,3} and 𝐹={−2,−1,0} and define a relation T from E to F as follows: For
all (𝑥,𝑦)∈𝐸×𝐹,

(𝑥,𝑦)∈𝑇 means that 𝑥−𝑦3 is an integer.

a) Is 3𝑇0? YES
Is 1T(-1)? YES

Is (2,−1)∈𝑇? NO

Is (3,−2)∈𝑇? YES

b) Write R as a set of ordered pairs. R= {(1, -2), (2, -1), (3,0)}

c) Write the domain and co-domain of R. DOMAIN= {1,2,3} ; CO-DOMAIN= {-2, -1,
0}

d) Draw an arrow diagram for R.

3 0

3. Define a relation T from R to R as follows: For all real numbers 𝑥 and 𝑦,

(𝑥,𝑦)∈𝑇 means that 𝑦2−𝑥2=1 .

Is T a function? Explain.

No. T is not a function because it does not satisfy property.

4. Let 𝑋= {2,4,5} and 𝑌={1,2,4,6}. Which of the following arrow diagrams determine
functions from 𝑋 to 𝑌.

The answer is D. It is a function because each element in X is related to one

element in Y and no element in X is related to more than one element in Y.

5. Define functions 𝑓 and 𝑔 from R to R by the following formulas: For all 𝑥∈𝑅,

𝑓(𝑥)=2𝑥 and 𝑔(𝑥)=2𝑥3+2𝑥/𝑥2+1

Does 𝑓=𝑔? Explain.

Yes because it is equal to zero.
