Overview

The novel El Filibusterismo (Reign of Greed) was written by Dr. Jose Rizal the national hero of
the Philippines. It is the sequel of the Noli Me Tangere also written by Dr. Jose Rizal published
on September 18, 1891. The novel was also written in Spanish just like the first novel Noli Me
Tangere that is first published in Ghent. Unlike the prequel there is big changes in character and
theme of the novel. The Noli Me Tangere was called as the work of heart while the El
Filibusterismo is called the work of the head. The El Filibusterismo is a political novel that is
dedicated to GOMBURZA giving the emotion of anger and revenge for the wrongly accused and
executed. Dr. Jose Rizal writings became his weapon to fight for his country against the abusive
government of Spaniards. His works is not just a writing to read but it gives hope and faith by

m
showing the true identity of the society that being controlled and tortured by Spaniards. How

er as
Rizal inspired scholars by his works? Maybe that is because they share thought, why they must

be used in their own land? Why would they follow foreigner in their native land and why they

are being slaved and why they are always the one who’s been the victim by the foreigner which

Personal Reflection

El Filibusterismo is a social-critical work and political work that show how corrupt and how the
vi y re

society devastated in the work of politics and its influence to its official and friars. El
Filibusterismo contain 38 chapters that contains scene how brutal the Spaniard government and
ed d

how they abused the power to take advantage of the lives of other people. The novel emphasizes
ar stu

the position of the society back in the Spaniards government that is aim to open the eyes for
those who’s been blind, to be an ear for those who’s been deaf and be the voice for the people
who don’t have position in the society that can’t speak. The novel become the reflection for
is

every Filipinos not to be degrade that everything will change and make an appearance anyone
Th

will not expect. Simoun in the novel of El Filibusterismo was also the Crisostomo Ibarra in Noli
Me Tangere we notice that there is a big difference on their characteristic. Simoun was too
sh

powerful and doesn’t live with the past anymore. Some of these are very entertaining, and some
of the points both amusing and well-made, but ultimately Simoun is left in the shadows too much
of the time. Almost too powerful a figure, it's understandable that Rizal did not constantly want
him at the fore, but he's certainly the figure readers want to hear and see more from. While, much

of the social criticism here is specific to a time and place, enough is certainly universal; Rizal
was also clearly well-versed in the European fiction of the time, and El Filibusterismo is
certainly comparable to and often more entertaining than much of the social fiction coming out
of Europe at the time. Regardless of the changes of the character the novel become the great
novel written by Dr. Jose Rizal. The changes of the character persona are how Rizal want the
society change its perspective how they view the Spaniards which is they are not helping the
Filipinos to socialize and make the economy improve but they are extracting everything to use
against the Filipinos in their own land.

The novel El Filibusterismo was written to honor the three-martyr priest who has been wrongly
accused and executed injustice. The death of the GOMBURZA give a big impact to the Filipinos

m
back then to fight for their own land which has been colonized by the Spaniards. The three-

martyr priest was executed because friars frame them up as the leader of the Cavite Mutiny.

As the national hero of the Philippines, I don’t think we need to quarrel abut this kind of issue
that is because they are national hero in their own way. Such a title for me doesn’t define why Dr.
Jose Rizal write the novels because he didn’t write the novels to impress and to be declared as
is

the national hero. He writes the novel because of his love to his own land and being the national
Th

hero is just a title for him. Without the execution there is no dedication for the novel and there is
no courage for the revolution of the Filipinos that express their thought and freedom against the
sh

wrong doing of the Spaniards government.

The intended messages of both novels

The novel Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo was written to express for the people of the
Philippines. The issue in the society back then they are present in each novel and giving life to
the character enhance the characteristics of every character in the novel. The novel is reflecting
what happened under the Spaniard regime and the novel itself is the History of the Philippines.
Knowing the Noli Me Tangere is a work of heart reflect how Dr. Jose Rizal love his country by
expressing it to Maria Clara and the novel also present other characters who is also a contributor
and has a love to his country. The novel Noli Me Tangere is expressing the love and there is
calmness to the character of Crisostomo Ibarra while in El Filibusterismo Crisostomo that is in

m
er as
disguise as Simoun show a different kind of character that want a revenge and his emotion is full

co
of anger and too hungry for justice to reveal the wrong doing of Spaniards government. The two

eH w
novel show what the Filipinos need during that time where everyone was afraid for being lack of

o.
rs e
connection and power which took their voices to shout for help for being merciless of the
ou urc
abusive Spaniards.

Differences between two novels

o
aC s

Dr. Jose Rizal the author of the two-premising novel of the Philippines that told the history under
vi y re

the regime of the Spaniards government. The novel set the understanding Filipinos for the
Spaniard that they are lifting the Filipino but they are taking advantage for being voiceless and
ed d

the people who is not able to learn who become uneducated to know their right as a citizen of
ar stu

their own country and their right as a person. The Noli Me Tangere is full of patient and respect
that make the character of Crisostomo Ibarra weak in other way that give the opportunity to the
is

other character to take advantage on him by embarrassing him in front of other people. The Nolie
Th

Me tangere was dedicated to our mother land expressing love, showing respect, beliefs and
culture which is completely different to the its sequel El Filibusterismo which focused on getting
revenge and its full of anger to reveal the wrong system of the Spaniards Government which is
sh

expressing the thought for what happened to GOMBURZA the three-martyr priest.
