DJ: You're in the mix with DJ Matt, its 4:30 pm in the afternoon and you're listening to 195.5 P6 Radio.
We're here again for loads of stories and jamming sessions today. But first let's check out the new song
by Backstreet boys.
DJ: Wow, great new song from Backstreet boys. That's going to be a classic! Now we've got some
interesting story to hear from the historic literature of the Philippines. You know guys, I always wonder
how Filipinos live during the past centuries because it’s really amazing how they contributed to the
world we are living in right now. But anyways, I don’t want to delay this story any longer. Without
further ado lets listen to this story.
Narrator: In a small farming village called Manhayang, Sta. Barbara, somewhere in Negros. Like most rural
barangays, the hardworking and closely-knit village folk there had simple needs, simple wants, and simple
dreams. They were living their own lives when the war reached their place and brought death to their village,
their homes, and their hearts.

Narrator: Without seeing the dawn

Narrator: An industrious, strong, and sometimes quick-tempered young man, Carding, aspired to marry sweet
Lucia, the daughter of teniente del barrio.

Carding: Dad, I want to tell you something.

Juan: What is it my son?

Carding: I want to marry Lucia dad.

Juan: But you’re not prepared and besides, I am hoping for you to finish your study.

Carding: But I love Lucia dad, and I can’t imagine my life without her. I want to build a family with her.

Juan: Are you sure about that?

Script
Carding: Of course, dad.

Juan: Well, I guess no one can stop you with your decision. Go, marry her and live happily.

Carding: Thanks dad.

Narrator: After Juan gave his blessing to his son, Carding went to Lucia’s house to ask for her parents’ consent
about marrying their daughter through the traditional pamamanhikan. After the sincere talk with Lucia’s
parents, Carding and Lucia had a talk that night.

Carding: Lucia my love, I want you to meet me tomorrow morning at the forest.

Lucia: Why? Is there something wrong?

Carding: Non, just meet me ok? I have something important to tell you.

Lucia: Ok, be safe going home.

Narrator: Tomorrow morning, Carding and Lucia met at the forest.

Carding: From the first day that I met you, I adore you Lucia, I knew that it was love at first sight. I also knew
that you're the one. I love you Lucing, will you be with me for the rest of our life?

Lucia: Yes carding, of course I will marry you.

Narrator: Juan Suerte, the father of Carding gathered up almost all of his hard-earned savings for the dowry and
expenses for the wedding feast. Meanwhile, Carding excitedly built their house in spite of the advice of the
elderly that building one's house in May will bring misfortune to its inhabitants. Everything has settled and
finally, the most awaited time has come, the marriage of two lovers happened.

Priest: Ricardo, do you take Lucia as your lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for
worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you apart?

Carding: I do.

Priest: Lucia, do you take Ricardo as your lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better,
for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you apart?

Lucia: I do.

Priest: "What god joins together, let no one put asunder'. You may now exchange rings and blessings.

Carding: Lucing, receive this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit.

Lucia: Carding, receive this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit.
Script

Priest: I now pronounce you as husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.

Carding: I love you Lucing

Lucia: I love you too Carding.

Narrator: And so, it came to pass that after the grand wedding and the feast that followed, which was even
attended by their representate- the newlyweds lived happily on the entrusted land of tatay Juan by Don Diego.
But the happiness they experience did not last long. Misfortune struck early when their first child was stillborn.
A more difficult trial came when Lucing disgraced herself, her family and her husband by the temptation of the
house guest Luis, the son of their landlord. Carding caught Lucia and Luis naked inside their house.

Lucia: (Laughing seductively) Oh Luis.

Carding: What the heck is this?!!!! Get out of my house!!

Carding: How can you do this to me Lucia?!!!

Lucia: (Crying) I’m… I’m so sorry Carding. Stop hurting me!

Carding: You betrayed me!!! (enraged)

Lucia: (Sobbing)

Carding’s Friend: Ricardo! Ricardo! Ricardo!!!

Carding: What is it?
Carding’s Friend: The landlord is dealing you and your father’s land to another tenant!
Carding: Ok, I will talk to him.
Narrator: Carding set aside his anger to his wife and went to the landlord to talk to it. After an hour, Carding
went back to his house.
Lucia: Carding, forgive me, it was just a mistake. I truly love you (sobbing)
Carding: Stop crying, you know I will forgive you because I love you. Let’s start another life. (Calm)

Lucia: Thank you for forgiving me Carding! (Crying)

Narrator: The couple patched things up between them. But another problem came, the land that Carding and
his dad has been tilling for a very long time was given to another tenant. With no land to till, the pair try their
luck in the city. There, in Iloilo, Carding met Rosing and Nestong. They didn’t know that another problem will
test their love for each other.
Nestong: I guess it’s hard for the two of you to start since you have no land to build a new house and start a
new life. (wondering)
Carding: Yes, it’s really hard and nothings easy when starting a new life. But I am sure that we can live a happy
life that we had before.
Script
Nestong: Oh Rosing! Meet my fellow stevedore and union member, Carding. Carding, this is my wife, Rosing.
Rosing: Oh, nice to meet you Carding.
Carding: Nice to meet you too.
Nestong: Oh, I forgot to do something. Carding can you take my wife with you to your house?
Carding: Sure, no problem.
Nestong: Thank you, Rosing can you wait for me here?
Rosing: Sure darling, Take your time.
Narrator: Nestong and Carding with Rosing part their ways. Little did Carding didn’t know that something will
happen might destroy his relationship with Lucia.
Rosing: So, there are only two of us here, your wife cheated on you right?
Carding: Yes, why’d you ask?
Rosing: I know that it’s hard to erase what happen. Let me help you ease the pain. (seducing carding)
Carding: Oh no rosing stops, we both have our partners.
Rosing: Carding my dear, no one will ever know what happens between the two of us so, don’t be afraid.
(Seducing Carding)
Narrator: Carding was blinded by rosing’s seduction and forgot what he promise to Lucia.
Lucia: Carding? Carding? I’m home.
Narrator: Lucia was shocked at what she saw. It was Carding naked in the bed with another girl.
Lucia: (Angry and shocked) Carding!? What is this?!
Carding: (Shocked) Lucing... ah... let me explain... it’s not what you think.
Lucia: (Angry and hurt) How could you do this to me?!! This is it?!! Are you doing this because of the mistake
I’ve done to you!?. And you?!! You slut!! Get out!!
Narrator: Because of what happen, Lucia left Carding and went back to their barrio. After a week’s, carding
followed Lucia to tell good news.
Carding: Lucia my love, come back to me I have good news for you. The representate entrusted us to till the
land in Badlan. I missed you Lucia, come home.
Lucia: I miss you too Carding, I also have a news for you. I am pregnant.
Narrator: Lucia came back to Carding and they moved to Badlan and worked harder than ever. They were
blessed not only by a promise of a bountiful harvest, but also with a healthy son they named Crisostomo. Sadly,
their landlord sold the land, and they were given time to harvest what they sowed. Misfortune was like a
shadow though. A great flood destroyed everything that they had harvest and carabao as well.
Lucia: Carding what do we do now? Everything we worked hard for are now gone.
Carding: I guess we have to move to Mindanao to own another piece of land and start a new life.
Script
Narrator: Carding and Lucia moved to Mindanao but then Carding got drafted for military service.
Carding: Lucia, I will be gone for a long time. But don’t worry I’ll be back home and when I come back I will make
sure to continue the life we had in Badlan.
Lucia: Carding, I will wait for you, we will wait for you. Come back home safely my love. (Emotional)
Carding: I will.
Narrator: Carding didn’t know that another crisis will test their family.
Lucia: Please stop this!!, Help!!! Help!!!! Help!!!!
Narrator: Japanese soldier attacked their village and Crisostomo, their son and Tatay Juan, Carding’s father died
while Lucia was raped by the Japanese soldier.
Narrator: After a year, Carding finally went home. He returns with a hope of starting a happy life again. But
when he returned, he was delighted to find his wife heavy with another child. Misfortune welcome him again as
he got the news about what happen to Crisostomo and Tatay Juan.
Lucia: (Crying) Carding…. Crisostomo and Tatay juan are already dead. I’m sorry (sobbing)
Carding: Wha…. What happen to them? (shocked)
Lucia: They died because of illness (sobbing)
Narrator: All Lucia said to him was a lie, when he found out the truth about his father and son’s death and the
cause of Lucia’s pregnancy, he became like a fearsome madman that even his wife and mother-in-law thought
him to be bad. As his neighbors, relatives and friends in barrio Manhayang were tortured, raped and massacred
by the Japanese soldiers, Carding too became a seemingly heartless executioner to his enemies, and not even his
friend nor the brother of his mother-in-law were spared. He also almost killed the child that his wife had just
delivered, were it not born dead. For that, Lucia was so enraged that she sent him away and wished him dead.

Lucia: How could you almost kill a child?!! My child?!!! This is not you Carding!!!!

Carding: But that child is not mine!!! Seeing that child makes me remember of what happened to you, to our son
and to my father!!!

Lucia: I don’t know you anymore!!! Get out!!! If I knew that you will be like this, I wouldn’t wish you to come back
here!! I wish you were just dead!!

Narrator: Carding leaves. The Japanese then ordered everyone to enter a collective barrio or else considered
guerilla supporters and be shot. But the villagers of Manhayang refused to be considered enemies of their own
sons so they decided to evacuate in barrios farther away. However, Lucia was hesitant to go.
Lucia: No, I will stay here and wait for Carding, I know that he will come back!
Narrator: She knew that Carding will be leading the suicide attack to the Japanese garrison and when they
meet…
Lucia: Carding!
Carding: Luci…lucia…. I am…sorry for what... what I have done, please forgive me. Here... take this …. money and
flee… get out... get out of this place…
Script
Lucia: No Carding! I am your wife and I will stay by your side (crying and sobbing)
Carding: I... I lo… love... you rosing… forever… always... remember that…
Lucia: No!! Carding!!!! Carding wake up!!! Don’t leave me!!! Carding!!!!!!!
Narrator: Lucia refused to flee for she knew that she was still his wife, duty bound to receive the corpse of her
husband.
