FUTURE TENSES

 Future Tenses are basically used to talk about the future, but their patterns and usages are varied.
 There are three kinds of future tenses:
a. Simple Future
b. Future Continuous
c. Future Perfect
 Patterns:

Simple Future Future Continuous Future Perfect

(+) S + will + V1 (+ O/C) S + will + be + Ving (+ O/C) S + will + have + V3 (+ O/C)


(-) S + will not + V1 (+ O/C) S + will not + be + Ving (+ O/C) S + will not + have + V3 (+ O/C)

S = Subject
V = Verb
O = Object
C = Complement

 Note:

a. Simple Future Tense is used to talk about activity/event done/happened in certain time in the
future.
Example:
(+) I will contact you later.
(-) I will not contact you later.
(?) Will you contact me later?
 Yes, I will.
 No, I will not.

b. Future Continuous Tense is used to talk about an activity in progress done around certain period
of time in the future, or, when something else is done/happening in certain time in the future.

To make clear a certain time in the future, we often use TIME SIGNALS such as:
- By this time tomorrow
- At this time tomorrow
- At the same time next month
- At … o’clock tonight/tomorrow
- All day tomorrow
- In a few minutes
- This time next year

Example:
(+) He will be presenting his journal in an international conference when we inform him about his
interview next Tuesday.
(-) He will not be presenting his journal in an international conference when we inform him about
his interview next Tuesday.
(?) Will he be presenting his journal in an international conference when we inform him about his
interview next Tuesday?
 Yes, he will be.
 No, he will not be.

c. Future Perfect Tense is used to talk about prediction related to the completion of an activity
during certain period in the future, or, when something else is done/happening in certain time in
the future.

TIME SIGNALS used in Future Perfect Tense:


- By the end of …
- When + Simple Present …

Example:
(+) The students will have cleaned the villa when their mentor arrives.
(-) The students will not have cleaned the villa when their mentor arrives.
(?) Will the students have cleaned the villa when their mentor arrives?
 Yes, they will have.
 No, they will not have.
