In general, standardization organizations aim to give credibility to

terminology, product specifications, protocols, and more. Its main role is to

develop, coordinate, revise, interpret to produce technical standards that

support legal requirements for specific fields, for safety purposes and for

consumer protection from deceitful practices.  Fundamentally, standardization

means that your employees have an established, time-tested process to use.

When done well, standardization can decrease ambiguity and guesswork,

guarantee quality, boost productivity, and increase employee morale

Initially, standardization organization began to develop after the industrial

revolution due to the need of accurate machine tools and to solve the trading

problems that occurred between companies due to the diverse opinions and

selection. The first ever organization, the Engineering Standards Committee

was implemented in London in 1901, which helped the market to operate more

efficiently and consistently. After World War 2, other countries began

establishing other national organizations.

Currently, there is international standard organization (ISO) that provide

international standards to be used worldwide, with 166 national standards

members. ISO is a non-governmental body that communicate with English,

French and Russian. It began in 1946 in London when experts met from 25

countries to discuss the international standardization for one specific topic,

which is technology and manufacturing. Nowadays, ISO have 166 members

from different countries. Member organizations collaborate in the development

and promotion of international standards for technology, scientific testing

processes, working conditions, societal issues and more. ISO and its members

then sell documents detailing these standards.

The European standard is another organization, it is abbreviated to

EN which comes from European Norm. They are crucial in facilitating trade

and have high visibility among manufacturers inside and outside the European

territory. The EN must comply by all national standards to facilitate the

processes of trading in all EU members states and to secure comfort and

protection for all parties.

Another organization that is a member in ISO is the German

Institute for Standardization (DIN). It was founded in 1917 and its

headquarters is in Berlin. It covers the standards for nearly every field of

technology on a national, European and international scope.

The American National Standards Institute is the US representative

in the ISO and it aims to promote the use of American standards worldwide.

Becoming ANSI accredited means that you met the highest quality level,

which was tested and processed, this adds a level of confidence in the

certification of a certain product. ANSI’s role is to coordinate the activities of

organizations in the US that do develop standards.

The British Standard Institute was established in 1901, which was

the first standard organization ever, it prompts to promote trading, reduce the

waste by simplifying and standardizing production and protect the consumer.

The BSI produces technical standards for a wide range of products and

services.

AFNOR standards are created by the French Association Française de

Normalisation. AFNOR standards are less common than their English and

German counterparts but are still used to standardize certain niche products

with unique functions. It was established in 1926, and As a service provider,

AFNOR has developed a variety of deliverables - for companies in particular -

which, ranging from the distribution of standards to certification, including

training, helps in a practical way to integrate standards into the company's

development.

The American Iron and Steel Institute is an association of North American

steel producers. It is one of the oldest trade associations in the United States,

dating back to 1855. The group represents "over 75 percent of both U.S. and

North American steel capacity" by advocating for U.S. and North American

steel production companies.

SAE International is a professional association and standards development

organization for the engineering industry, with a special focus on transport

sectors such as automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicles. The

organization was originally established as the Society of Automotive

Engineers. It is based in the United States and was established in 1856.

ASTM International, formerly known as American Society for Testing and

Materials, is an international standards organization that develops and

publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of

materials, products, systems, and services. ASTM helps to ensure that only

quality, raw materials are used to produce bearings and other industrial goods.

‫‪GOST standards are regional standards administered by the Euro-Asian‬‬

‫‪Council for Standardization, Metrology and Certification (EASC). The‬‬

‫‪collection of GOST standards includes over 20,000 titles used extensively in‬‬

‫‪conformity assessment activities in 12 countries.‬‬
