I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard Content standard- the learners demonstrate understanding
of how sound waves travel inside the ear when eardrums are
exposed on loud noises.
B. Performance Standard The learner should be able to know the practices that are not
good for the ears and practice proper healthful habits in
taking care of the ear. Moreover, learners should be able to
know what causes eardrums to damage.
C. Learning Competency The learners should be able to describe the parts and
functions of the ear and how eardrum works and enumerate
healthful habits to protect the ear.
1. Unpacked Competency The learners should be able to describe the parts and
functions of the ear and determine the importance of the
eardrum and how sound waves travel.
2. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic Parts and Functions of the Ears
B. Science Ideas A human ear is an organ that helps us to hear, detects and
analyzes sound. The parts of the ear includes outer ear,
middle ear, eardrum, incus (anvil) and stapes (stirrup).
C. Science Processes observing, experimenting, analyzing, inferring, identifying
D. Value Focus Attentive to our hearing and balance.
E. Materials Plastic cup, Plastic wrapper, rubber band and 10 grains of rice
or salt.

II. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Engage
1. Drill Let the students learn and familiarize these following words:
Hammer (malleus)
Anvil (incus)
Stirrup (stapes)
Cochlea
Eustachian tube
Ear canal
Eardrum

2. Review Provide an illustration and let the learners label the

important parts of the ear. What are the functions of these
parts? What are these parts looks like? Observe properly.
B. Explore
1. Motivation Introduce the lesson by
showing your students
several different images
Of animals. Ideally, the
images should contain
close-ups of the animals’
faces, and specifically
Show the ears of each
animal.

1. What is common
on the pictures?
2. What they are used for?
3. What is the shape of the ears of each animals?
4. How the ear look similar to and different to
human’s ear.
5. How the structure of our ears helps us hear
things in our environments.

2. Presentation Show a video of How the Ears Work - Nemours KidsHealth

which can be downloaded from
https://youtu.be/RiVx5Lih_44
As the video is shown, ask the learners to identify the
different parts of the ear and examine the function of the
eardrum.

3. Pre-Activity Before dividing the class into 4 groups, discuss first the
properties of sound and hearing. Make sure that they are
knowledgeable that sounds came from vibrating particles.
Give a brief explanation on how vibrating particles travel to
our ear and make our eardrums vibrate.
4. Activity Proper Distribute the materials together with their worksheets.
Follow the instructions on how to make an Eardrum model
then accomplish the worksheet. Assign one group member
to be the reporter.
*See attach worksheet*
C. Explain
1. Group Activity After the group activity let them put their self-made model
eardrum in front. Ask all the representative of each group
to share and explain what materials they have used, what is
their conclusion in making an eardrum.
2. Discussion Ask:
Did you learn on what will happen to their eardrum if it will
be exposed in loud noises?
How does the sounds travel?
What is an eardrum?
• A thin flap of skin that is stretched tight like a drum and
vibrates when sound hits it.
What is the function of eardrum?
• Makes a vibration when a sound is hit.
• Separates the outer ear from the middle ear.
What a normal eardrum looks like?
• Pearly white or light gray.
How fragile is our eardrum?
• The eardrum is a very fragile membrane and this repetitive
gesture can damage it.
How much sound waves can picked by the ear?
• Sound waves as low as 20 Hz, and as high as 20,000 Hz.
What is the function of outer ear?
• Collects sound waves that travel in the air to the ear canal.
What does the cochlea produces?
• It produces vibration as the sound waves travel into the
inner ear?
Where can you see the middle ear?
• Can be seen through the ear drum and a portion of the
incus.
What is the function of middle ear?
• To carry sound waves from the outer ear to the inner ear.
What is the function of incus?
• Transmits vibrations from the malleus to the stapes.
What is stapes in the ear?
• The third of three tiny bones in the middle ear and the one
closest to the inner ear.
D. Elaborate
1. Generalization Why can a blind person still sense what is going on around
him? Why is the sense of hearing as important as the sense
of sight? What have you learned today?
2. Application CHALLENGE:
1. Look at the outer ear of your classmate near you.
How does it look like?
2. Cover your ears tightly with your two hands. Can
you hear any sound? Why?
3. Ask your seatmate to go out of the room and beat a
drum. Can you hear the sound well? Why?
4. Close your eyes and listen to the different sounds
around you. Can you identify them? Why?
5. How will you describe the sound produce by objects
near you? By objects around you?
E. Evaluate
A. Complete the pathway of sound through the ear.

Sound → → Auditory →
waves nerve

Eardrum ←

B.

III. Assignment Close your eyes and listen to the different sounds around
you. Can you identify them? What are the sounds that you
can hear and why can you hear them? (Write your answers
on a piece of pad paper).

ACTIVITY NUMBER: _______________

Listen Hear: The Function of Eardrums

Objective: Identify the structure of their ears and how they work through a diagram and by building a model ear
drum.

Materials:

A plastic cup

A piece of plastic wrap large enough to stretch over the lid of the cup and stay there securely.

A rubber band

10 grains of rice or salt

PROCEDURES

1. Prepare the materials needed.

2. Give each group about 10 grains of rice or salt.
3. Stretch the plastic wrap tightly over the cup, secure it, and place the grains of rice or salt on top. They
now have model eardrums.
4. Experiment with noisemakers to see if they can get their model eardrums to vibrate.
5. After a while ask for volunteers willing to make small holes in their model eardrums. Experiment with that
for a while. Notice what happens. Compare those with tears to those still intact. Also compare different
size tears.

Guide Questions:

Q1. What did you notice about what happened when we exposed our “eardrums” to different sounds?

Q2. What happens if we poke a hole or make a tear in one of them? Does it work as well?

Q3. Try to imagine a hole or a tear in your own eardrum. What do you think would happen to your hearing?

Q4. How would you take care of your ears? Especially your eardrums
