Title of the Activity: “Stack of Blocks”

Activity No.: 1
Learning Competency: The learners should be able to define Inertia. S8FE-Ia-15.1

Direction: You may do this simple activity at home with the help of any home companion.
Materials:
- five blocks of wood
(as much as possible the blocks should be identical in size)
- mallet
Procedure:
1. Stack the five blocks of wood on top of each other.
2. Take the mallet, and with a fast motion knock out the bottom block.
3. Observe what happens to the other blocks of wood.
Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the bottom block of wood when you hit it with the mallet?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
2. In which direction did the bottom block of wood go after you hit it with the mallet?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
3. What happened with the other blocks of wood above the bottom block after you hit it
with the mallet?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
4. Did the remaining blocks of wood follow the motion of the bottom block after it was
swiftly hit by the mallet?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
5. Can you identify and describe the force / forces that acted on the:
bottom block of wood ______________________________________________________________
other blocks of wood on top________________________________________________________

Draw the blocks of wood and the force/s that acted on it. Use arrows to represent
the force/s.

Title of the Activity: “Magic Tablecloth”

Activity No.: 2
Learning Competency: The learners should be able to relate inertia to mass. S8FE-Ia-15.2

Direction: You may do this simple activity at home with the help of any home companion.

Materials:
- 2 identical plastic water bottles (preferably 1L-volume)
- 1 liter of water
- table
- tablecloth

Procedure:
1. Fill one plastic bottle with water. Make sure to tightly cover it with the cap so that the
water will not spill. The other plastic bottle must be empty.
2. Label the plastic water bottle filled with water as Bottle A and the empty plastic water
bottle as Bottle B.
3. Place the tablecloth neatly on the table and put the two plastic water bottles on top of
it.
4. Holding the tablecloth from the edges, slowly pull it. Observe what happens to the two
plastic water bottles.
5. Return the set up from its original position. This time, holding the tablecloth from its
edges swiftly pull it or whip it off. Observe what happens to the two plastic water
bottles.

Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the plastic water bottles when you slowly pulled the tablecloth from
the edges?
Bottle A __________________________________________________________________________
Bottle B __________________________________________________________________________
2. What happened to the plastic water bottles when you swiftly pulled the tablecloth from
the edges?
Bottle A __________________________________________________________________________
Bottle B __________________________________________________________________________

Closure: How will you relate the mass of an object to its ability to resist change in its present
state of motion?

Title of the Activity: “Spot the Difference”

Activity No.: 3
Learning Competencies:
The learners should be able to relate inertia to stopping forces like friction. S8FE-Ia-15.4
The learners should be able to cite situations where the law of inertia applies.S8FE-Ia-15.5

Procedure:
Analyze the pictures below and answer the questions that follow:

An airbag is one of the safety features included by car manufacturers to cars to lessen
the force of impact to drivers in case of a car crash or a sudden accident.

Scene A Scene B
The pictures show a dummy in a simulated car crash.
Guide Questions:
1. Can you spot and tell the difference between the two scenarios?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
2. Based on the two scenarios, what is most likely to happen if a real person is driving
the car in Scenes A and B?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
3. What do you call the force that pushes a body forward inside a moving vehicle when
it suddenly stops? How is this force related to friction?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________

Closure: Is it important for cars and other vehicles to have seatbelts, air bags and other
safety features? Why? Why not?
