Title of the Activity: “Action and Reaction”

Activity No.: 1

Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to explain why action and reaction forces do not cancel each
other. S8FE-Ib-16.2 2
Direction: Identify which is the action force and which is the reaction force on each statement.
The first one is already done for you to serve as your example.
Scenario Action – Reaction
Action Force: The boy’s body exerts a
1. A boy sitting on a chair. His body downward force.
exerts a downward force while
the chair exerts an upward force Reaction Force: The chair exerts an
for it not to collapse. upward force.

Action Force:
2. A man rowing a boat. As he
paddles, the boat pushes the
water backward and the water Reaction Force:
pushes the boat forward.

Action Force:
3. A walking girl in a room. Her foot
pushes the floor down and back
while the floor pushes her up and Reaction Force:
forward.

Action Force:
4. A deflating balloon. The air inside
the balloon rushes downward to
escape as the balloon is forced to Reaction Force:
move upward.

Action Force:
5. A basketball player shooting a
ball. The basketball player
pushes on the ball away, the ball
Reaction Force:
pushes back the basketball
player.

Closure: How are you going to differentiate Action and Reaction Forces? Do they cancel each
other?

Title of the Activity: “Balloon Rocket”

Activity No.: 2

Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to apply the law of interaction to falling bodies and to activities
like walking and swimming as well as to jet and rocket. S8FE-Ib-16.3

Direction: You may do this simple activity at home with the help of any home companion.
Materials:
- balloon
- straw
- string
- tape
- glue
- scissors
- 2 identical chairs
- tape measure
Procedure:
1. Measure a 3-foot distance between the two chairs using the tape measure. Label the
two chairs as Chair A and Chair B. Tie one end of the string to Chair A.
2. Put the other end of the string through a straw. Then pull the string tight, and tie it
to Chair B.
3. Blow up the balloon, and pinch the end of the balloon to keep the air inside. Do not
tie the balloon.
4. Tape the balloon to the straw so that the opening of the balloon is horizontal with the
ground.
5. Pull the balloon all the way back to the end of the string tied in Chair A, so the balloon
opening is against Chair B. Hold the balloon opening closed.
6. Let go of the balloon and watch it move along the string.
Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the balloon when you let go of its opening?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
2. How will you describe the motion of the balloon as it moves along to the string?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
3. Can you identify the Action and Reaction Forces in the set-up?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________

Closure: Do you think objects will be able to move without action and reaction forces?
Why? Why not?

Title of the Activity: “Interactive Sports”

Activity No.: 3
Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to apply the law of interaction to falling bodies and to activities
like walking and swimming as well as to jet and rocket. S8FE-Ib-16.3
Materials:
- old magazines or newspapers
- scissors
- paste or glue
- activity sheet / bond paper
Procedure:
1. Look for pictures of athletes playing their sports in the sports section of the magazine
or newspaper.
2. Cut out four pictures and paste it on the space provided in this activity sheet or a
clean bond paper.
3. Write a short caption below each photo and relate it with the Law of Interaction.

Closure: Aside from these sports activities, can you cite daily activities that manifest the
presence of action-reaction forces?
