Ayala Land Inc. is known for its large-scale, integrated, mixed-use, and sustainable estates that
evolve into thriving centres or business districts. These districts serve as a platform for economic activity
that is necessary for nation-building, and this also provides for the development needs of diverse
stakeholders. It also promotes inclusive growth and is operated through sustainability principles. As a
property developer, Ayala Land continuously refine its corporate social responsibility through the goals
and metrics of its four focus areas namely: Site Resilience, Resource Efficiency, Pedestrian Mobility and
Transit Connectivity, and Local Economic Development.

In Site Resilience, the company plans and conducts an advanced level of technical due diligence
throughout its properties. It includes the consideration of the extreme weather conditions, rising sea
levels, and other climate change hazards that can undermine their real estate products and the
communities they serve. They build a solid climate resilience for the purpose of quick recovery from
environmental stress. They screen for geohazards with technical due diligence, provide space for refuge
and rainwater absorption, and plant native trees to improve biodiversity and ecosystems.

For Resource efficiency, the company uses plenty of resources in property development such as
energy, water, and materials like steel and cement. To ensure that they do not contribute to the
continuing loss of the country’s natural resources, they use them in a judicious and efficient manner to
reduce both of their materials consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. They carry out sustainable
development programs such as energy and water conservation alongside waste diversion schemes.

In Pedestrian Mobility and Transit Connectivity, the company focused on their master planned
communities to ensure that people are provided with safe alternatives to motor vehicles. By creating
pedestrian-only areas, highly accessible walkways, transit stops and terminals, they also provide
abundant opportunities for walking and commuting. This is not only for the purpose of expanding
business development and work opportunities, they also help contribute to a healthier environment by
reducing oil consumption and improving air quality.

Finally in the local economic development, Ayala Land continuously build a large-scale, master
planned, and mixed-use estates across the Philippines, with that they also tend to generate progress and
growth for both the businesses and employees at the development cycle. The company has been
continuously contributing to nation building and has created value for the entire community through
various ventures such as prioritizing local hiring, investing in skills training in the areas they develop and
operate, and allocating spaces in their malls for home-grown businesses to prosper.

These CSR practices are carried throughout the company by the employees as sustainability
principles have been embedded into the organization’s value chain. These practices aimed for a positive
impact in the community and to shape a deeper commitment to environment conservation. Having
these sustainable practices and metrics into the company, Ayala Land ensures to address the future
needs of the Filipino society by taking advantage of its core competencies.
IV. Effects and Sustainability of CSR Practices

Corporations should continuously promote and develop corporate social responsibility as it will
impact the business, consumers, employees, and environment. By doing so, they can filter all their
strategic decisions before and after doing an action. For Ayala Land Inc., they believe that they have
potentials to make an impact in the lives of people and communities in which it operates, as well as in
addressing some of the most pressing development challenges. Due to their commitment and
continuous social responsibility practices, the business received numerous awards. That in turn, allows
them to build a good reputation.

The Ayala Land, Inc. is known for their four sustainability focus areas, that has the greatest
impact to society in which it operates. These are Site Resilience, Resource Efficiency, Pedestrian Mobility
and Transit Connectivity, and Local Economic Development. This approach ensures that sustainability is
guaranteed to continue as it has become part of the discipline of the company’s business processes from
the very beginning. In 2016, Ayala Land earns Asian CSR award for Environmental Excellence for "Native
Landscape for Site Resilience and Urban Biodiversity." It is not their first time to be recognized at the
Asian CSR Awards. As a matter of fact, the company received "The Asian CSR Environment and Value
Chain Management Award" in 2012 for establishing the first eco-city in the Philippines and integrating
conservation and biodiversity protection initiatives into its developments (Ayala Land, 2016).
Furthermore, as of 2017, Ayala Land was recognized as the "Most Socially Responsible Company of The
Year". This implies how they planned, constructed, and operated their products and services according
to sustainability principles, such as minimizing impact to the environment and neighboring communities,
and contributing to the economy.

Moreover, Ayala Land also champions traditional philanthropic initiative such as Hero
Foundation, which it actively assists to provide educational stipends to children of Filipino soldiers who
have been killed or injured in the line of duty (Aces Awards, n.d.). It all started in 2009, where the
company has gifted its partners with Christmas Cards that act as monetary donations to the foundation.
Aside from that, their shopping malls are venues for Hero donation boxes that promote, not just the
value of generosity but also a genuine appreciation for the sacrifices of Filipino soldiers.

Besides the awards they received, through their sustainable social responsibility principles,
practices, and programs, they are able to positively impact not just its communities but also the
surrounding towns. It also helps to minimize the impact and take advantage of all opportunities
available to enhance ecosystem services and community cohesion. Further, as one of the profitable
organizations in the country, the company was also able to contribute to the economy. All in all, the
company’s CSR activities and programs have netted them increased economic value, resulting in
increased economic value distributed (Aces Awards, n.d.).

In sum, these awards and recognitions reflects how committed the company is in creating a
positive impact on people and the environment by building communities that are well-integrated,
resilient to climate change, and supportive of local economic growth. That in turn, promotes inclusive
growth as well.
