1. A convex lens of refractive index 1.5 has a focal length of 20cm in air. Calculate the change
in its focal length when it is immersed in water of refractive index 4/3.
2. A double convex lens of glass of refractive index 1.6 has both its surfaces of equal radii of
curvature of 30cm each. An object of height 5cm is placed at a distance of 12.5cm from the
lens. Calculate the size of image formed.
3. A screen is placed 90cm from an object. The image of the object on the screen is formed by
a convex lens at two different locations separated by 20cm. determine the focal length of
the lens.

Section –B (Questions carrying 4 marks each)

4. (a) Write any two properties of electromagnetic wave.


(b) Name the constituent radiations of E.M. spectrum which is used for;
(i) Aircraft navigation.
(ii) Studying crystal structure.
Write the frequency range for each.
5. (a) What is refraction of light? Define absolute refractive index of a medium.
(b) Explain how the length of a day will get affected in the absence of atmosphere.
6. (a) Obtain an expression for equivalent focal length of two lenses kept in contact.
(b) Derive lens formula.
7. (a) Obtain an expression for the deviation produced by a thin prism.

(b) How does focal length of a lens change when red light incident on it is replaced by violet
light? Give reason for your answer.
8. (a) What is optical fibre? Write its principle.
(b) Write any two uses of optical fibre.
9. Name the types of E.M. radiations which

(iii) Maintain the Earth’s warm.
Write briefly a method of producing any one of these waves.
10. (a) The oscillating magnetic field in a plane e.m. wave is given by:

(ii) Write down the expression for the oscillating electric field.
(b) Draw a sketch of a plane E.M. wave propagating along z- axis. Depict clearly the

11. (a) How are X- rays produced? Write their any two important uses.
(b) How are infrared waves produced? Why are these referred as heat waves? Write their
one important use.
12. (a) Draw a ray diagram for a spherical mirror which produces virtual and diminished image
of an object placed anywhere in front of the mirror. Use this ray diagram to obtain the
expression for its linear magnification.
(b) When a monochromatic light travels from one medium to other wavelength varies but
frequency remain constant explain why?

13. What is critical angle? Obtain an expression for critical angle for a pair of media in terms of
their R.I.
A double convex lens of +5D is made of glass of Refractive index 1.55 with both faces of
equal radii of curvature. Find the value of its radius of curvature.

14. Obtain lens maker’s formula using the expression:

Here the ray of light propagating from rarer medium of R.I (n1) to a denser medium of R.I.
(n2) is incident on the convex side of spherical refracting surface of radius of curvature R.
A parallel beam of light incident on a glass sphere (ng=3/2) of diameter 40cm find
the point to which the light will converge.

A small air bubble is situated in a glass slab of 24 cm thickness. When viewed from one face,
its apparent depth is 10 cm and when viewed from the opposite face it is 6 cm. Calculate
the refractive index of the glass slab.
16. With the suitable ray diagram obtain an expression for angle of deviation produced by a
prism in terms of angle of incidence and angle of emergence.

A beam of light converges to a point P. A lens is placed in the path of the convergent beam
12 cm from P. at what point does the beam converge if the lens is a convex lens of focal
length 20cm.

17. Derive an expression for the refractive index of glass in terms of angle of prism and angle of
minimum deviation.
A ray of light passing through an equilateral triangular glass prism from air undergoes
minimum deviation when angle of incidence is (3/4) th of the angle of prism. Calculate the
speed of light in vacuum.
18. Write laws of refraction.
An illuminated object and a screen are placed 90cm apart. Determine the focal length
and nature of the lens required to produce a clear image on the screen twice the size of
object.
