INCREASING STUDENTS ABILITY IN READING BY THE THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS

Supervised by.

This research aims: to discuss the way how the instruction of reading English can be promoted.
The total population is 122 students with 30 students as the sample. This research employed a quasi-
experimental, a pre-test was held before treatment and post-test after treatment the use efficient
strategies to train students to found meaning and guess correctly the meaning of words in reading
the post-test is carried out by giving reading tests to students to got a data that shows students
achievement in understanding the meaning of words and correct pronunciation of words.

A. INTRODUCTION
In the world, English is used as the main language for most people make English as their
communication tool. English is supposed as the first foreign English in Indonesia. The government
also considers the role of English is very important means of human resources development through
foreign language education therefore, English begins to be taught at secondary school as compulsory
subject. The students have to master it in term of list : speaking, reading , writing , and listening in
English. They are expected to be able to know the development of science and technology of the
world with their competences.
In this paper author’s attention is focused on shooting the meaning of words , how students read
the appearance of words, how students or individuals understand the meaning of words or symbols
written or printed, reader’s guess can be wrong. Reading can provide students or individuals with
information, entertainment, research, etc. when we want to know the meaning of what we read,
generally reading is divided into three, namely the speech of learning is lass than 200 word/minute,
careful reading of more than 200 words/ minute and the last skimming of more than 300
word/minute to discuss the material in a hurry specially for their students taught by their teachers on
how to read the reading text and understand the meaning of the reading they are studying.

B. LITERATURE REVIUW
a. Definition of reading
Based on the Oxford Dictionary, reading means the activity of somebody who reads, he looks at and
understands the meaning of written or printed word or symbol While Bastidas ( 1984 ) in says that
reading is psycholinguistic guessing game that involves an interaction between thought and
language. the reader is always making guesses which may be correct or incorrect, the reader are
encouraged to take a risk, to take chance, this means that sometimes the guesses will be wrong The
reader needs to maintain many information just doing reading activity, but in fact sometimes since
the reading text is not their own language, then it always becomes a problem reading is interactive
the reader use their background knowledge in order to get information from the printed page
reading is to read efficiently
b. The process of reading
Reading is a complex process. It has been mentioned above of this text but , in general, the process of
reading can happen perfectly if the reader has known all written or printed words.
For example the reader can understand the universal sentence , question sentence and exclamation
sentences
c. Efecient reading
In order to gain a maximum result when reading, of course there are some minimum
requirements needed. Such as knowing sufficient vocabularies and ability of understanding the
written language this stetment many strategies used when reading.
In a information taken from a book of mei yun ( 1989) said that educative native speakers of
engloish generally read in three different speed, namely the speech of learning is lass than 200
word/minute, careful reading of more than 200 words/ minute and the last skimming of more than
300 word/minute to discuss the material in a hurry specially for their students taught by their
teachers on how to read the reading text and understand the meaning of the reading they are
studying.

C. METHODOLOGY

a. The research method of this study


What becomes the main concern of this study is that the writer wants to explore about the
significance of mastery for reading ability toward the students of SMP st. Antonius, especially those
who are sitting in the third year. Because the writer believes that reading is as one aspect which is
very important in the national examination. The writer chooses a kind of observation by having and
gathering data depend on a test result. According to sugiyono (2006:3) research methodology is a
scientific way together data for certain purpose and usage. The writer is a scientific thesis.

b. Time and place of the research


This research will be done at SMP YPKK St. Antonius Nabire. This R Time and Place of the Research
school is located in the middle of Nabire city.
The writer will make a schedule for seyeral steps that will be taken in tihe research. The activity will
be scheduled as shown on the table below :

c. Population and Sample


The school has 14 classes, where 5 classes is for the 1st year students, 4 classes for the 2nd year
students, and 4 classes for the 3rd year students And the total population for the third year students
are 122 students. The writer chooses the third year students, because they almost finish the learning
process by facing the National Examination next year in May The writer hopes that in 3 months this
research would be completed, in this case, the students of the Junior High School will be taken as
samples Exactly, the best students who sits in class A will be taken as samples.

d. Data Collection Technique Research data collection can be done before, during and after research
action. It means when collecting data for the purpose of a research, a researcher can do this activity
(collecting data) at any time It can be done previously, in the middle, and at the end of the research.
We know the term "direct and indirect observation While interview and survey is include in direct
observation, and the best kınd of observation is depend on the problem and research design. In
observation method, there are three important things. What have to observe, when and how is it
done. About the first question, what must observe, it is reference on behaviour which take as
variable will be searched This behaviour has to be translated in several indicators. Then the question
about when and how, is straight on time and finding data. The write takes the population only one
class in SMP St Antonius. The class is the first year of the Bilıngual Class, which students amount is 26
students, and the writer takes all of them as the sample of this research.

e. Data Analysis
The data gathered from the students would be analysed in descriptive analysis, and the will be
used variable is dependent variable. This variable is used to know the students achievement of
mastery reading ability.

D. Findings And Discussion

In this thesis, although the title is the Achievement of the Reading Ability of the Third Year Students
of SMP SL Antonius Nabıre, and hos or thesis' discussion is about the nchievēment or the successful
of the students m making a comprehension of the reading text. The writer thinks that Explaining the
best way to have deep understanding is also imponant for this matter will also become the main
requirements of the successful reader

a. The View of Reading


Because the main purpose of writing this research is to discuss about the achievement of the
reading ability then the writer finally make a rescarch to have the desired data from the students in
their reading skill From the discussion with the English teacher to get the success in teaching English,
the English teachers have several tasks that must be done, They are :
1. Make the lesson plan, in which it discusses a text
2 Doing teaching and learning process of reading
3 Make an evaluation of the result of teaching process of reading
4 Giving a chance to the students and the teacher to discuss together about the topic given.

5. Find and help the students who have difficulties.


6 The teacher must make an interesting environment or situation when the students and the teacher
in a teaching and learning process.
7. Make a research in every reading learning process, or at least the teacher must make a conclusion
for what has been taught.

Since there are so many problems as written above, at least these would not be an easy
problem to do, to complete. Because we all know that each teacher has different style in teaching,
and the ability of the teachers are different each other This what makes the purpose to complete all
tasks above become uncompleted To overcome this problem, here we have some things to be done
by the teachers of English, such as :

1 The teacher must teach effectively and actively


2. The teacher has to manage the classroom activity
3 The teacher must have the interaction with students actively.
4 The teacher must be professional for his task according to his skill, or field of knowledge.
There are still many ways in order to make the teacher qualıfied when teaching reading But
when we talk about the efforts, sometimes the reason why it becomes useless and unsuccessful
always comes

b. Reading Activities
To solve some problems of reading activities, the teacher supposed to know about the
activities of reading itself so that they will have an understanding of the reading activities and they
could make a good treatment for each activities, such as
b.1. Pre-reading activity The aims of pre reading activity are
1. To introduce the topic or to encourage the students interest to read the text (the text book are not
interesting, and through this activity it is hoped that it can encourage the students interest to read
the text).
2. To motivate the students to have reason or aim to read
3. To anticipate both the vocabulary can be discussion among the students in group or in pairs, using
picture or oral or written tasks given by the teacher.

b.2. While-reading activity


In this part, the students are trained to do the reading skills, such as skimming, scanning, etc.
Skimming is rapid reading skill to get general idea
of the text or skimming is more intensive readıng than scanning Scanning is a way of rapid to get a
certain information of a text After doing 'skimming and "scanning', the students might want to read
intensively, because they want to get more detail information By reading intensively, the students
find the whole meanıng which they do not know
b.3. Post- reading activity
In this part, the students can do the various kinds of activities, for example to connect the topic
to the daily activities where must use English
Those activities of are done by the students in reading activity in order that they can do readıng
as well as possible, and finally the ability of reading can be reached.

C. The Test
What makes the writer interested in making a research and discussing about reading, it is
because the material før the National Examination are mostly reading text While reading requires a
lot time to make a comprehension, more over if the students do not have experience and know the
best way to do It.
The test is hold in two times, means the test is done twice Although all students follow the
test, but the writer chooses only 30 students who's grade are the best The writer assumes 30
students as 100% of the total students who follow the test The difference between both test are only
in the form of the teacher's approach to the student, while for the first test tlie teacher doesn t teach
the student about the best way to understand the reading text, but in the second test the teacher
prepare the students with the reading knowledge in order to be more ready to face reading text test
The material of the first and the second test is alse different It is meant the students will have
dıfferent experiences in English reading test, and the more ihey follow the test, the better the result
will be. The malerial of the first test and the second test are taken from the English National
Examination text. The purpose of this decision is that the students can achieve their ability in makıng
comprehension in reading text, more over they can be more ready in the National Final Examination,
just because the experience of facing the example form of The National Examination text previously
In this test, the writer also set a minimum standard score The minimum score is adapted from
the minimum National Examination standard
Score, it is 55 or 5,5 ( five point five )
D. The result of the test
1. The first test
The writer makes a test for all students of the third year at SMP St.Antonius. it is done a research to
know the achievement of the reading ability of the students. The test is done in two times. It is
because the writer wants to explore the achievement of the students ability in reading, before and
after been taught about how to do the reading text well. The test is fairly done by not allowing the
students to cheat and use dictionaries. The first test is done without teaching the students first,
about how to do the reading text effectively and efficiently so that they do the test naturally and
depending on their ability only The writer takes the best 30 students from all students.
