UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL PUNJAB, LAHORE

This article was published in Bulletin of Education and Research in 2017. The paper seeks to
examine the leadership styles of Heads of Departments and the faculty's perspectives on their
Educational leadership style. Beginning of the article explains that as representatives of an
educational process and operations, they are regarded as an educational leader. Higher Education
is responsible for harmony. Generally, higher education is neglected and faces mismanagement
in the name of leadership, resulting in dropping academic excellence standards.
Some setbacks have been discussed too, mostly foreign qualified are appointed as HoD’s
and mostly male dominance can be seen but when evaluated, each gender and sector has an own
influence on styles of leadership, while foreign qualification has no impact on leadership styles.
It is evident from the findings that the HoD’s of the universities whether private or public rated
themselves higher as compared to the faculty. Foreign degree is considered very important for
attaining a higher position, but according to the research in this article there was no visible
difference seen in the scores.
It is suffice to say that in self-evaluation exaggeration or over confidence can be a vital
flaw to assess or conclude any results based on its findings. Though on the other hand faculty
evaluation cannot be accurate as well because there can be an element of grudge or biasness. Not
much of research is done in this field, so it is difficult to give a final verdict about the leadership
performance.
In Pakistan the higher education leadership style is same in both private and public
sector. There is no significant difference that can be seen in the performance of both except for a
few traits. Our system lacks proper training and learning that is necessary for the leadership of
universities to execute their role well. In a place like university, where people are prepared to
enter into the professional field it is essential for the HoD’s to manage and facilitate them
accordingly. And become the role models so the problem of leadership performance is
eliminated if any student wishes to join the head position in the future.
Inducing Emotional intelligence and using it further enhances and nurtures the
Educational leadership style. It is often known that emotional intelligence is a mixture of non-
cognitive characteristics as well as skills and abilities that enable a person to succeed in meeting
his or her requirements.
