Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 10

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, 80% of the students should be able to:
1. Discuss the difference between physical and chemical change.
2. Determine examples of physical and chemical change
3. Appreciate the importance of physical and chemical change by citing its
application

II. Content
A. Topic: Changes of matter
B. Skills: Describing, Differentiating, Explaining, Observing, Critical thinking
C. Values Integration: Inquisitive mind, cooperation, and awareness

In chemistry, physical changes only change the appearance of a substance, not its
chemical composition. It is a change on its size, shape, color, texture, magnetic or electrical
condition but its molecular condition remains totally unaltered.
Chemical changes cause a substance to change into an entirely substance with a new chemical
formula.

the shape of container.
 Exactly!
Solid has a definite shape and
 How about difference between Solid and volume while gas has no definite
gas? Yes (student name) shape

 Very true!
How can we distinguished that matter is a We can distinguish that matter is a
gas? Yes (student name) gas by its particles due to that the
particles of gas are far from each
other.
 Exactly

 So is there any questions regarding our None, ma’am

previews lesson?

 now, let us move unto our next lesson for

today

Motivation

 Before we proceed to our discussion, I have

here a piece of paper and a candle with
matchstick. What we are going to do is to cut
the paper into small pieces and burn the
candle with the use of matchstick. So in
order to perform this activity I want two
students to participate. Any volunteer?
Please raise your hand. Yes (student name)

 Who else? Yes (student name)

 So I'll be assigning (student 1 name) to cut

the papers into small pieces and (student 2 (students will do the activity)
name) to burn the candle using a matchstick.
And everyone please observe.

 So now, what have you notice on the I notice the changes in its appearance

Changes in its state or matter was
 Ok good. What else? Yes (student name) observe in the activity ma'am.

 very good

 So, what you have observed in these activity

was related to our topic about changes in
matter

 Let us proceed to our discussion.

Activity

 Today I will discuss to you the Two changes

of matter which are the physical and
chemical change

 When you hear the word physical change Ma'am, the physical change is a
what comes into your mind? Yes (student change the physical form of matter
name) not in its identity.

 Ok very good. What else? Physical change is a change on its

size, shape, color, texture,
magnetic or electrical condition but
its molecular condition remains the
same
 Very good

 How about chemical change? Yes (student A chemical change is a process

name) that cause a substance to change
into a new substance with new
chemical properties
 Yes your right

Class I have here a picture of Aspirin capsule

which it is crushed into powder and a glass
What changes are taking place in this sample?
Who can answer? Yes (student name)
Sample 1:
a.

b.

Ma'am, it is a physical change

 How can you say that these two samples

undergo physical change? These samples undergo physical
 very good change to that it is being the same
and there is no new product being
I also have here another sample. Two beaker of an form.
Acid base solution. What changes do this sample
undergo and why? Yes ( student name)
Sample 2:

It undergo chemical change ma'am.

Because there is a change in their
chemical properties
 Very good

 What do you think is the chemical

reaction that formed on these sample?
Any idea? Yes (student name)

 OK very good
I think ma'am it is a chemical
 Did you bring the materials needed for precipitate because of the acid-
your Laboratory activity today? base reaction.

 OK, so we will perform this activity to

see the actual changes of matter and you
must identify whether it is a physical or Yes ma'am
chemical change. Since I already divided
you into two group. Each group will
perform the laboratory Activity with
Their materials. So the group 1 will
perform lab experiment no. 1 and group (students are preparing their
2 will perform lab experiment no. 2 materials )

 Please present your laboratory materials Lab Experiment # 1.

and procedures group 1 and group 2
Materials: cornstarch, water,
cup, stir stick

 Place 30 mL of cornstarch in a
cup
 Add 10 mL of water and stir
well
 Place some of the mixture on a
table.
 Touch it with your fingertips

Lab experiment #2
 As long as you are ready you can start
now I only giving you 10 mins to do Materials: Steel Wool, Vinegar, Two
your activity. beakers , Paper or a lid (something to
cover the beaker to keep the heat in),
Thermometer

 Place the steel wool in a

beaker.
 Pour vinegar on to the steel
wool and allow it to soak in
the vinegar for around one
minute.
 Remove the steel wool and
drain any excess vinegar.
 Wrap the steel wool around
the base of the thermometer
and place them both in the
second beaker.
 Cover the beaker with
paper or a lid to keep the
heat in (make sure you can
still read the temperature on
the thermometer, having a
small hole in the paper or
lid for the thermometer to
go through is a good idea).
 Check the initial
temperature and then
monitor it for around five
minutes.

(the students will start doing the

activity and each member of the
group will participate )

Analysis

 Are you done? Yes ma'am

 Alright, is there a change in matter Yes ma’am

happened on your solution?
(students answers may vary on their
possible observation)
 So in your activity. Explain your answer Group 1
and observation in front. Each group - The product become solid
should have a representative. ma’am because when the
cornstarch mixed with water, it
turns solid. This happens
 In group 1. What was your product? because the water molecules
gets trap on the molecules of
starch, making this solution
firm.

- The physical change was

 As part of your observation, what type observe, because when the
of changes in matter was formed? cornstarch is mixed with water,
it causing a physical change,
even though it may not be
obvious. There is no new
substance produced, it is
simply a property of cornstarch
that it arranges itself in this
way when mixed with water.

Group 2
- When we soak the steel wool in
 How about group 2. What have you vinegar it removes the
observe in your activity? Explain. protective coating of the steel
wool and allows the iron in the
steel to rust. Which is this
reaction creates heat energy
which increases the
temperature inside the beaker.
The temperature inside the
beaker should gradually rise,
you might even notice the
beaker getting foggy. So a
chemical change was observe
in these experiment because it
causes a substance to change
into something chemically new.

 Ok very good

 So, based on your answers and

explanation physical and chemical
change in matter was observed on your
laboratory activity and you present it
very well

 Congrats everyone, for a job well done.

Please give yourself a round of applause

Abstraction

 Another way to think about physical

changes is that it does not cause a substance
to become a fundamentally different
substance but a chemical change causes a
substance to change into something
chemically new.
(students are listening)
A chemical change is a change in the
composition of the original substance.
Chemical changes are also known as
chemical reactions. The “ingredients” of a
reaction are called the reactants, and the end
results are called the products. The change
from reactants to products is signified by an
arrow:

Reactants → Product

 In some cases, it may be hard to tell whether - When you dissolve sugar in water,
a chemical or physical change occurred. a physical change occurs. The form
Please read some of the examples. Any of the sugar changes, but it remains
volunteer? the same chemically (sucrose
Yes (student name) molecules). However, when you
dissolve the salt in water the salt
dissociates into its ions (from NaCl
into Na+ and Cl-) so a chemical
change occurs. In both cases, a
white solid dissolves into a clear
liquid and in both cases, you can
recover the starting material by
removing the water, yet the
processes are not the same.

Another form of physical change are:

 Creation or separation of a mixture
(including homogeneous mixtures, where
the solute may not be visible)
 Physical deformation (cutting, denting,
stretching, etc.) •
 Physical relocation (moving an object

 Do you understand now the difference Yes ma'am

between physical and chemical change?

 Any question? None, ma’am

Application

 Since a chemical change and physical Students answer may vary but must
change happens every day. include the following.

Chemical change
o Burning wood
 Get ½ crosswise and write situational o Souring milk
example of physical and chemical change in o Mixing acid and base
matter that are happening on your daily lives o Digesting food
o Cooking an egg
 I will only giving you 5 minutes to write o Heating sugar to form caramel
your answer and then pass it to me o Baking a cake

Physical change
o Crumpling a sheet of aluminum
foil
o Melting an ice cube
o Casting silver in a mold
o Breaking a bottle
o Boiling water
o Evaporating alcohol
o Shredding paper
o Sublimation of dry ice into carbon
dioxide vapor
o Carbon changing from graphite
into a diamond

Generalization
Let me ask you a question as a sort of
review.

 What are the two changes of matter again? Physical and chemical change

 Ok!! Physical change is a change in an

objects physical properties such as
 So, based on what you have learned can size, shape, color, texture,
you now discuss the difference between magnetic or electrical condition
physical and chemical changes? but its molecular condition
remains totally unaltered. Some of
the examples of Physical change
are cutting, denting, stretching,
boiling, crushing, melting,
mixing, evaporating, etc. while A
chemical change is a process that
cause a substance to change into a
new substance with new chemical
properties. Examples are
precipitation, burning, cooking,
mixing, rusting and more

 Very good
The other examples of physical
 Who among you here can give other and chemical change that are
examples of physical and chemical changes happening in our community are
of matter that are happening in your hammering of wood to build a
community? house, combustion of fuel, heating
of zinc oxide and freezing of
water

 Therefore, how important is these physical Physical and chemical change are
and chemical changes of matter into our really important due to that we
community? apply these on our everyday
living.
 Yes, very good!
