CHAPTER I

Introduction

This research will mainly focuses on the Different Personality Types of a Millennials. This

research will be conducted to determine which of the known personality type are common among

Millennials. This research will also tackle the etymology of both said topics starting of with the

Millennials then followed by the Personality Types and theories that support both Personality Types and

the Millennials as said.

Millennials

According to Douglas Main a Writing Staff in a website called Live-Science "The term

Millennials generally refers to the generation of people born between the early 1980s and 1990s,

according to the Merriam Webster, some people also include children born in the early 2000s." as he

stated in his article from September 2017.

They are called Generation Y because it comes after Generation X those people between the early

1960s and the 1980s. The population Ad age was one of the first to coin the term "Generation V" in an

editorial in August 1993. But the term didn't age well and "Millennials" has a largely overtaken it. But the

terms basically mean the same thing, Douglas Main added.

According to Sonja Hannus “It seems that the millennial generation workers value and require

different traits from their work than the earlier generation.”

Personality Types

According to Merriam-Webster “Personality is the set of emotional qualities, ways of behaving,

etc., that makes a person different from other people.

11
“Personality is the sum of the unique psychological qualities of an individual that influence a variety of

characteristic behavior patterns.” As stated by Philip Zimbardo (Psychologist)

This means that personality can vary among different individuals because as stated Personality is

what makes a Person unique compared to others.

According to the Book Essentials of Psychology and Life “Personality Typologies attempt to

simplify the relationship between an individual’s behavior and a simple, highly visible characteristic of

the person, or assumed characteristic of the categorical class.

Personality types are the term used to make a classification or to categorize an individual

personality characteristics and make them easier to analyze and understand. And also "According to type

theories, for example introverts and extroverts are two fundamentally different categories of people."

These two classification by Carl Jung (Psychologist) gave inspiration to other researchers to search for a

deeper understanding of the said classification. Examples are the Big Five Model, Jung's Analytical

Psychology, Hans Eysenck's three-factor model, Raymond Catell's sixteen personality factors, the

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

“Eysenck (Psychologist) has developed a personality inventory that can identify people who vary along

the trait dimension of extraversion-introversion.” From the Book Essentials of Psychology and Life. It is

also mentioned there that “Extravert are sociable, outgoing, active, impulsive, “tough-minded” people.

Introverts are their psychological opposites; they are “tender-minded” individuals, noted for being

withdrawn, inner directed, passive, cautious and reflective”

The purpose of this research is to establish new knowledge about which Personality is dominant

among Millennials hence the title. This research aims to provide better understanding of why Millennials

act the way they do with the help of the Personality Type test indicators. This aims to provide answer for

people who wants to understand the Millennials better. Because a lot of people sees the Millennials as too

12
open-minded and a lot of people are puzzled by their thought patterns. Leading us to the expectation that

with the help of the Personality Type Indicators/Test such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicate or MBTI we

can determine the traits and characteristics of the subject resulting to the better understanding for

Millennials and gathering new information on how effective and accurate the Personality Type

Indicators/Tests are, and find new answers on how our society gets affected by the subjects actions and

traits.

The following variables that will be a factor in this research are first and the foremost the Age,

because this research aims to find out which Personality Type are dominant among Millennials we will be

restricting the Age Group from people born between the early 1990s up to 2000s, second variable is of

course their Personality Type, this comes as a variable because Personality Type Indicators/Test will be

used to determine which Personality Types is dominant in the subject. Also characteristics will play an

important factor in this Research because it also affects the Personality of the Subject. Next is Family

Background, environment and Interests because as said from past studies that social interactions build up

a person, because of this we determined that it is also important to include the following variables.

Statement of the Problem

We the researchers aim to find out which personality type is prevalent amongst the Millennials in

Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo. We also want to find out the answer to the following questions:

1. Does our current society have an effect to the Millennials personality?

2. Can the Personality Types Indicator/Test accurately gauge out the subject's personality?

3. Can the Millennials still be classified as Introverts or Extroverts?

4. Is there a significant difference between the results of the test takers who got an introvert

or extrovert results?

Significance of the Study

13
This research would benefit:

1. Millennials

Of course the main beneficiary of this research, are the Millennials themselves because as we

know, Millennials are known for their self-seeking trait. Thus this study can help them understand

themselves better.

2. The Personality Test Makers and Developers

This study can help the test creators and developers to know if the test can still determine the

personality type of the subject accurately or not.

Hypothesis

There is no significant difference between the numbers of test takers who got an introvert and

extrovert result.

Scope and Delimitation

The results of this study are limited to the population of Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo of

which can be considered as Millennials. The research will be conducted by the first week of February

2018 S.Y. 2017-2018. The results of the study also cannot be assumed to be representative of other

population or the other population of Millennials from other schools

Review of Related Literature

According to the Merriam Webster, "The term Millennials generally refers to the generation of

people born between the early 1980s and 1990s."

From the book created by Ron Alsop (Author) entitled "Trophy Kids", "Millennials have been

characterized in a number of different ways. On the negative side, they've been described as lazy,

narcissistic and prone to jump from job to job." According to the PWC's 14th Annual Global CEO Survey

that "Millennials are irrespective of the long-term aims and ambitions of an individual company, the

ability to attract and retain millennial talent will be a vital to achieving it." (2017). According to the site of

Millennial Impact Research Report (2013), "Millennials are compelled to share their content." According

to Jayne Thompson (2017), "Millennial' and all the pejorative stereotype that come with it. Millenials are

variously described as entitled, self-interested, tough to manage, narcissistic, unfocused, lazy and

'precious snowflakes' who can't handle criticism and want everything handed to them on a silver platter."

According to Sonja Hannus “It seems that the millennial generation workers value and require

different traits from their work than the earlier generation.” (Sonja Hannus 2016).

According to the site of Primer (2016), "Millennials in the Philippines are described as those who

are social-media dependent and also, the 'selfie' generation. Millennials in the Philippines are known to

usually spend for luxury goods which leave their bank accounts shaken - the reason why they are also

described as 'broke'. Compared to other generations, Millenials have their say about issues and are more

involved with politics." According to the site of Rappler (2016), "In the Philippines, Millennials make up

20
one-third of the total population. They're the ones politicians talk to. The ones marketers try to entice and

persuade. The ones companies want to hire. They are a force to be reckoned with." According to the site

of Philstar (2014), "Older, much wiser individuals have frowned upon this young generation's growing

list of offenses, often built on the Millennial's desire for shameless self-promotion." According to the site

of The Standard (2015), "Countless studies have been made in an effort to understand Millennials, but it

is only now that particular focus has been given to the uniqueness and intracacies of the Filipino Youth."

According to Nikki Natividad (2016), "Millennials are estimated to account for 72% of the global

workforce. This means that the attitudes and traits of these self-involved, selfie-taking individuals are

what will be shaping various industries, both as workers and consumers.

“Personality is the sum of the unique psychological qualities of an individual that influence a

variety of characteristic behavior patterns.” By Philip Zimbardo (Psychologist)

According to the Book Essentials of Psychology and Life “Personality Typologies attempt to

simplify the relationship between an individual’s behavior and a simple, highly visible characteristic of

the person, or assumed characteristic of the categorical class.

“Eysenck has developed a personality inventory that can identify people who vary along the trait

dimension of extraversion-introversion.” From the Book Essentials of Psychology and Life. It is also

mentioned there that “Extravert are sociable, outgoing, active, impulsive, “tough-minded” people.

Introverts are their psychological opposites; they are “tender-minded” individuals, noted for being

withdrawn, inner directed, passive, cautious and reflective’”

While on Jung"s Theory (Psychologist), "People are innately different, both in terms of the way

there see the world and take in information, and how they make decisions." According to Mahler (2017),

"The reality is that poor communication has NOTHING to do with being an introvert or extrovert." Also

21
he states that "Introverts and Extroverts make great presenters." According to Joseph Bennington-Castro

(2013), "Extroverts talk more abstractly while Introverts talk more concretely." Another aspect coming

from Mahler (2017), "Introverts is someone who needs to reflect within themselves in order to source

their energy, and groups may de-energize them, but that does not give them any real excuse for being a

social outcast, they have the same skills as everyone else." In an article by Naomi Karten (2010), she

stated that, "Introverts describe extroverts as: a) Lively and enthusiastic, b) Bringing great energy to

interactions, c) Able to keep any conversation going and d) Skilled in Social Situations."

A statement about extroverts as stated by Mahler (2017), "Extroverts loves to bounce ideas off

the people around them. They do things like mention prostitutes just for fun." According to Jung

(Psychologist), "Extroverts wear more decorative clothing, whereas introverts are more practical in their

clothing choice." In an article by Naomi Karten (2010), she stated that, "Extroverts describe introverts as:

a) Deep thinkers, b) Articulate in presenting their ideas, c) A calms and calming influence and d) Good

Listener.

CHAPTER III

Methodology

Method of Research Used

In this research, we will be using the qualitative Research Method in our data gathering procedure

using a revised edition of Myers – Briggs Type of Indicator (MBTI) which consists of “21” questions.

Respondents / Locale of the Study

RESPONDENTS

The researchers w gave out 10 questionnaires to random subject from each sections on each grade

level as long as it is in the campus of Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo. Simply we will be needing ten

people from each sections from each year levels.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

, The research was performed in Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo

Secondary Education Department were it is located on P. Ocampo St., Guitnangbayan I, San Mateo,

Rizal.

23
Data Gathering Procedure

First step was to prepare a sample survey questionnaire for the respondents of our research study.

We will use the simple random sampling technique to select the ten respondents from each section from

each year levels in Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo. The researcher letter of request must give to the

campus head of Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo to approve and allowing the researcher to conduct the

said questionnaire. After the letter was approved, the researcher was already able to conduct and give the

questionnaire to the respondents. After all data information was answered, the researcher analyzed and

interpreted the said data.

24
CHAPTER 4

Finding and Discussion

This Chapter will include the Data Analysis and Data Interpretation. We will use graph to depict

the data collected. The data collected through the use of MBTI inventory will be discussed and will be

elaborated in this chapter. This section will present the findings of the study. And will be showing of the

Rejection or Acceptance of the Hypothesis. This study also aims to provide answer to the following

questions:

Q1: Can the Personality Type Indicator/Test accurately gauge out the population / subjects

personality?

Q2: Can the millennials still be classified as Introverts or Extroverts?

Q3: Is there significant difference between the results of the test takers who got an Introvert and

Extrovert results?

4.1 Findings

QUESTIONNAIRES

As said in the last chapters we picked the Secondary Department of Roosevelt College Inc. San

Mateo which includes the Junior and the Senior High School Departments. The questions are provided by

the Personality Trait Test an application for Android Smartphones. The application is developed by

Aaditya Prakash. The application is used as our main guide for the questionnaires and the survey papers

gathered from the given population is interpreted by the application..

25
After inputting the survey papers in the application we have found that the Test Takers is inclined more in

Introversion than Extraversion by a wide margin. As shown by the table:

26
the respondents while the least in the Introvert area is the INFP. In the Extroversion area the majority of

the respondents have the result of ESTJ while the least is ESFP.

The findings in the study shows that millennials nowadays are more into the Introverted side.

Chart. 4.1

The chart shows the numbers of respondents that inclines more in the Introverted and Extraverted side.

INTERVIEW

For the interview, we picked two respondents who we deem knowledgeable about the personality

types.

We picked two respondents for our interview both are Teachers from Roosevelt College Inc., San

Mateo.

Interviewee: Teacher from Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo

Question 1: Are you familiar with the MBTI?

Interviewee: No,

27
Question 2: Then, are you familiar with the Personality Types?

Interviewee: Yes, the Introverts and Extroverts right?.

Question 3: Based on your observation which do you think is more common Personality Type pf

millennials, Introvert or Extrovert?

Interviewee: For me it is Introvert, Because based on my experience. At home my siblings are very much

immersed in their Cellphones and I think that. Technology affects socialization of a person.

Question 4: Do you think exterior factors such as (environment, technology, etc.) have an adverse effect

on the Personality Type that an individual might possess nowadays?

Interviewee: Yes, because as I said, Technology is a major factor that affects the Personality of someone

because, a lot of people prefer playing and browsing the net with their phones than play outside.

Interviewee: Teacher/Guidance Counselor on Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo

Question 1: Are you familiar with the MBTI?

Interviewee: Yes, but I can say that I’m not that well-versed in MBTI, as I know MBTI is used as a test to

help a person determine the right career for him/her.

Question 2: Do you think that it is effective/accurate in gauging out the Personality Type of people?

Interviewee: For me it is accurate in its time, but now that a lot of other Personality Type Tests are

introduced, a lot of other modern tests are more accurate than MBTI.

Question 3: Based on your observation, Which do you think is more common Personality Type of

millennials, Introvert or Extrovert?

Interviewee: Extroverts, definitely because a lot of millennials are outgoing and more open in expressing

their thoughts and feelings among others.

Question 4: Do you think exterior factors such as (environment, technology, etc.) have an adverse effect

on the Personality Type that an individual might possess nowadays?

Interviewee: Yes, environment and technology affects the personality of a person greatly.

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION

This section will provide the summary of the how the research is conducted and this section will also

show the findings of the study.

29
5.1 SUMMARY

The data collection is conducted on February 21-26, 2018 among the chosen respondents which is the

Secondary Education Department in Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo. Starting from the Grade-7 to

Grade-12, each Grade levels and its section we picked out 10 respondents randomly. And gave them

questionnaires that relates to the Personality Types and the results are far different from the hypothesis

formulated for this research which is that “There is no significant difference between the numbers of test

takers who got an introvert and extrovert result”. Guided by the tool that we used to interpret the data the

interpretation tool namely the “Personality Trait Test” which can be downloaded as an application for

Smartphones. Developed by Aaditya Prakash the application uses the 16 Personality Types which is

divided by the two Dominant Personality the Introversion and Extroversion the two said Personality

Types are divided Into Eight each with their own sub-traits which can be either (1. N-Intuitive, 2.S-

Sensing, 3. F-Feeling, 4.P-Percieving, 5.T-Thinking, 6.J-Judging). After collecting and interpreting the

data we interviewed Two Teachers from Roosevelt College Inc. San Mateo and the Interviewees gave

Introverts are more common nowadays because of the influence of technology on their lives, some cases

are other teenagers or Millennials which are the main concern for this study, became recluse due to their

CONCLUSION

After the overall review and findings of the Study we reached the conclusion and gave answers to our

questions that we formulated in this study which are the following:

As the answers in each questions for no.1 According to our two Interviewees Societal

factors affect the Personality of a Person especially Technology which gives great effect

to the lives of it’s users. For no.2 According to the finding of the study it was determined

when we are interpreting the data a Personality Type called ISTJ is said to be more

common among the other personality type. Which is true based on what was found on

this study. For no.3 they still can but it can be also hard to believe because other people

may seem like an Extrovert but he or she is an Introvert for the final question, there is a

by a wide margin as shown on the last chapters.
