Note: The learning module tool
needs to be added to your course The learning module is a component in Blackboard Vista that allows you to organize
before you can begin creating mod- your materials for a course in a logical order. Below is what the learning module
ules. looks like from the build view with information in it.

To add the Learning Module tool


select the Build Tab>Manage
Course>Tools

Note: You can add the following


items to a learning module:
• Assessment
• Assignment
• Web Link
• Chat/Whiteboard Rooms
• Discussion Topics
• Content Files (html and pdf
formats)
Design a Learning Module

The Learning Module allows you to design the flow of instructions by structuring the
various learning activities (files and interactive activities) sequentially.

In the drop-down menus for each component you can modify settings, preview,
modify the action menu, view the links, or delete each component.

Use only HTML or PDF documents in learning modules.

Create a Learning Module


A Learning Module includes the following:

• A table of contents
• A collection of sequentially arranged pages
• Built-in navigation links
• Optional interactive tools (Assessments, Discussions, etc.)

To create a Learning Module:

1. On the Build tab, select Learning Module from the Course Tools menu

2. Click on Create Learning Module

Title and Description

Title:

• What you write in the Title area will be displayed in the Learning Module

• Keep the labeling convention the same across Learning Modules

• Use titles that are descriptive and can be used from one semester to the
next.

Description:

• Use this space for assignment and Learning Module instructions

• You can choose to show or hide the newly created Learning Module

Table of Contents

On the Left:

• Students will be able to navigate freely within the Learning Module

Do not display:

• Students can only go through the module in a linear format

First page of the Learning Module

This last setting determines what you want the students to see when they first
enter the module.

Table of Contents:

• This option supports a module that encourages students to navigate freely

First page in the Table of Contents:

• This option supports a linear format but still displays a table of contents

3. Select Save, Cancel, or Save and Create Another to continue

Add Files or Instructional Activities

To add files:

1. Click Add File

2. Select Browse for Files to find a file or Create File to make a file

If you “Browse for Files” you will be asked to select a file from your class
files or your local computer.

Choose the files (you can select more than one) you want to include and
select “OK” to add them to your module.

If you “Create File” you will be asked to enter content to be included in an


.html file format.

You can format the content using html codes or use the HTML Creator for
an easy to use text editor.

To add instructional activities:

1. Click Add Content Link

2. Select an already prepared assignment, assessment, etc. from the inventory or


create a new activity (see next section)

Note: You can add more than


one file or activity at a time by
selecting all of them while holding Content Placement
down the Ctrl key.
To insert content in a specific spot within the Learning Module:

1. Click the activity that comes before the assignment.Your addition will be added
below the selected spot.

To move any activities up or down the Learning Module:

1. Select the checkbox next to the activity you want to move

2. Select the arrow next to the activity you want to put it above

Headings

Use the Create Heading button to organize the content added to a learning
module.

Indent

You can indent items in a module by selecting the checkbox next to the item and
choosing “Indent” from the buttons at the bottom of the screen.

To outdent an item click on the check next to it and select “outdent.”

Create an Instructional Activity with the Learning Module


If you intend to include an instructional activity but have not yet created it, you can
do so within the Learning Module.

1. Click the Add Content Link

2. Select the tool you want to add

3. Click the Create button

4.You will be directed to that activity’s tool

• For help creating different content items, please refer to the individual
tool’s instructions.

Note: Make sure the tool has been


added to the course if you wish to
create a new activity from within the
content module.

Learning Module Printable View

You can create a printable view of all content or selected content in a learning
module. The printable view can be printed or saved to a file.

The following information appears in the printable view:

• Files (word, pdf, excel, zip, graphics, txt) – Title and file type
• Web pages (HTML) – Title and full content
• Assessments - Title of assessments
• SCORM Modules - Title
• Assignments - Title, instructions, collaboration type, due date,
grading criteria, and attachments
• Discussions - Title and description of chat and whiteboard rooms,
and discussion categories and topics
• Media Library Collections - Title and description of media library
collections and the title, description, and attachments of the collection’s
entries
• URLs - Title and web site address of URL

To print in the Learning Module:

1. In the Action Menu, click the Create Printable View icon

2. The Select Items screen will appear displaying a list of all content in the learning
module

3. Click Continue. The compiled contents will appear.

4. Click Print.Your computer’s print dialog box will appear.

5. Make your selections to print the compiled content

To save the compiled content to a file:
