FIRE PROTECTION

A. The Work under this section shall include providing all materials, labors and plants
to furnish and install fire protection system as shown on the drawings and specified
herein.

1.3 SUBMITTALS:

A. Material and equipment information: Shall include catalog cuts and technical data
for each component or device used in the system.

B. The contractor shall provide information outlining the operation and maintenance
procedures that will be required by Engineer.

C. Sequence of operation, electrical schematics and connection diagrams shall be


provided.
D. Shop Drawings: Shop drawings shall indicate locations, installation details and
operation details of all equipment associated with the fire protection systems.

1.4 WARRANTY:

A. The Contractor shall furnish a written guarantee covering the satisfactory operation
of the fire protection system in all its parts for a period of one (1) year after date of
acceptance. During this period, the Contractor shall repair or replace any defective
work and pay for any repair or replacement costs.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. All the work specified in this section shall be installed in accordance with the
applicable provisions of the following codes and standard:

1. Factory Mutual Laboratories (FM)

2. Underwriter's Laboratories (UL)

3. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 PIPES AND FITTINGS:

A. Piping for fire hose cabinets, vertical dry risers and sprinkler system shall be
seamless Black steel pipe, conforming to ASTM A 53, Type E, Grade A or B,
Schedule 40, roll grooved ends. Vertical dry risers shall be provided with 63 mm dia
valves at each floor complying with civil defense requirements for connecting their
hose.

Fittings for pipes 2 inches dia. and smaller shall be malleable iron threaded type
conforming to ANSI B16.3, Class 150.

Fittings for pipes above 2 inches dia. shall be fire-lock fittings by VICTAULIC or
approved equal with fire-lock couplings or as recommended by manufacturer.
Sprinkler head connections shall be Snap-let By Victaulic or approved equal.
B. Concealed piping in masonry walls shall be protected against corrosion with
DENSO tape or approved equal corrosion resistant wrapping approved by the
Engineer. All exposed piping shall be painted red with alkyd enamel paint
complying with the requirements of Section PAINTING.

2.2 RECESSED MOUNTED FIRE HOSE REEL CABINETS:

A. Fire hose reel cabinets shall be surface mounted and recessed trimless type
constructed of 20 gauge steel box, 20 gauge tubular stainless steel door with 18
gauge frame with a continuous steel hinge (brass pin).. Door shall have Duo-vertical
panel with break glass. Cabinets shall be complete with fire hose reel assembly with
25 mm dia, single, 30 m long multiple ply synthetic rubber hose with red exterior
mounted on revolving steel drum, angle valve, fog nozzle and 10 Lbs. multi-
purpose dry chemical portable fire extinguisher, as mentioned below. All steel
components shall be powdered coated with electrostatically-applied thermally fused
re-coatable red polyester finish. Fire hose reel and all other components inside
cabinet shall be UL listed. Cabinets shall be of size as shown on drawings.

2.3 MULTI-PURPOSE PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS:

A. Multi-purpose portable fire extinguishers shall be of red enamel steel shell, SASO
64 and SASO 647 compliant, UL Listed, FM approved, 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) capacity,
Class A+B+C, multi-purpose dry chemical (Ammonium phosphate base) complete
with squeeze grip discharge horn, pressure gauge and wall-mounted bracket.

2.4 CARBON DIOXIDE PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS:

A. Portable fire extinguishers shall be red glossy polyester-coated aluminum cylinder,


SASO 63 compliant, UL Listed, 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) capacity, carbon dioxide agent used
to provide protection against Class B and C fires, complete with squeeze grip,
discharge horn and wall-mounted bracket.

2.5 FLUSH FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION:

A. Fire department connection shall be UL Listed, wall type, cast brass six-way inlet
body with drop clappers. Two polished brass 2-1/2 inch double female snoots with
rigid end N.P.T. x pin lug hose thread swivels, plugs and chains, having NH
standard threads, for the connection size as indicated or as specified in NFPA
1963, and conforming to the local Fire Department requirements. Unit shall have
wall escutcheon of polished cast brass, finish to match connections, with words
both in English and Arabic "AUTO SPRINKLER - FIRE DEPARTMENT
CONNECTION" in raised letters.

2.6 FREE-STANDING FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION:

A. Fire department connection shall be UL Listed, free-standing, six-way inlet cast brass
body with clappers, chrome plated. Six polished brass 2-1/2 inch double female
snoots with rigid end N.P.T. x pin lug hose thread swivels, plugs and chains, having
NH standard threads, for the connection size as indicated or as specified in NFPA
1963, and conforming to the local Fire Department requirements. Unit shall have
base plate of polished cast brass, finish to match connections, with words both in
English and Arabic "AUTO SPRINKLER - FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION" in
raised letters.
2.7 FIRE HYDRANT

A. Shall be of cast iron construction UL Listed, FM approved, complying with AWWA


C502, 6-inch wet barrel, traffic type. Hydrants shall have two 2-1/2 inch hose
nozzles and one having 4-1/2 inch bumper nozzle. Nozzles shall be American
National Standard Fire Hose Coupling Screw Thread in accordance with NFPA
1963, and conforming to the requirements of local Fire Department. Each inlet shall
have a plug and chain. Units shall be finished in UV resistant red polyester coating,
with words both in English and Arabic "FIRE HYDRANT" in raised letters for above
ground and epoxy coating for underground portion. Provide isolation valves
between hydrant and water mains.

2.6 FIRE HOSE VALVE (FHV):

A. Shall be UL Listed, FM approved suitable to be used as an auxiliary water supply


by the fire service. Shall be single outlet furnished with polished brass round plate
lettered WALL HYDRANT and female N.P.T. x male thread snoot with cap and
chain. Threads conforming to the local Fire Department requirements. Size shall be
2-1/2 inch diameter.

2.7 SPRINKLER SYSTEM:

A. Sprinkler Heads:

1. General: Automatic sprinkler heads shall be UL and ULC Listed and FM


approved, fusible element type. Sprinkler heads shall be with nominal 1/2
inch (12.7 mm) discharge orifice, 5.6 K-Factor, maximum working pressure
of 175 psi, and temperature rating of 93C for kitchen and 74C for other
areas. Sprinkler heads shall be located where shown on the drawings, and
shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 13 Standards.

2. Pendant Sprinkler Heads (Recessed): Shall be recessed pendent type


(adjustable), bright chrome, 2-3/8 inch length and 1-1/2 inch width (across
frame arms). Each sprinkler head shall be provided with adjustable chrome
plated recessed metal escutcheon, 3-1/4 inch dia; all nominal sizes. Fusible
alloy element is sealed into bronze center strut by a stainless steel ball.
When the alloy melts at its rated temperature, the ball is forced upward into
center strut, releasing the two ejectors and operating the sprinkler.

3. Sidewall Sprinkler Heads: Shall be bright chrome, 2-3/8 inch length and 1-
1/2 inch width (across frame arms). Sprinkler head shall be designed with a
special deflector which causes most of water to be discharged to one side in

manufacturer's standard pattern. Fusible alloy element is sealed into bronze
center strut by a stainless steel ball. When the alloy melts at its rated
temperature, the ball is forced upward into center strut, releasing the two
ejectors and operating the sprinkler.

4. Upright Sprinkler Heads: Shall be bright chrome plated. Fusible alloy


element is sealed into bronze center strut by a stainless steel ball. When the
alloy melts at its rated temperature, the ball is forced upward into center
strut, releasing the two ejectors and operating the sprinkler.

B. Water Flow Indicators:

1. Water flow indicators shall be of the paddle flow clamp-on type with vane
projecting into pipe through a hole drilled in pipe, instantly recycling retard,
and adjustable time setting of 30 to 60 seconds. Unit shall be for operation
on 220 volt, single phase, 60 hertz service with contacts for connection to
main fire alarm panel.

C. Floor Control Valve Assembly (FCVA):

1. Floor control valve assembly shall be the same as the Water flow indicator
mentioned above and as detailed in Drawings.

D. Valve Supervisory Switches:

1. Provide UL listed valve supervisory switches as required, arranged, to


detect the open or closed position of control valves. Switches shall be
attached to the various control valves being supervised and shall be
complete with tamper switches, required trim, contacts for connection to
main fire alarm panel and electrical characteristics compatible with those of
the fire alarm system.

E. Alarm Check Valve:

1. Shall be single-piece cast iron valve body, as shown on the drawings, UL


listed and FM approved. Valve shall be provided with all required
accessories and trims including water pressure gauge and pressure switch
for electric alarm to main fire alarm panel.

F. Valve Identification:

1. Provide UL listed tags on all control drain, test and alarm valves in
accordance with NFPA Standards No 13 and 14.

2.8 FM-200 FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM:

A. System Description and Operation:

1. The system shall be a total flooding FM-200 extinguishing system designed


to provide a uniform concentration of 7% FM-200 as shown on the drawings
and in accordance with NFPA 2001.

2. The system shall be actuated by a dual-loop system of a combination of


ionization smoke detectors. Automatic operation in each separate protected
area shall be as follows:

- Actuation of one detector in either loop shall:

- Illuminate the respective zone (circuit) lamp on the control unit.

- Energize a pre-alarm audible bell signal associated with that area in


which the detector was operated.
- Transmit a signal to the building's fire alarm system.

3. Actuation of a second detector in the other loop shall:

- Illuminate the respective zone circuit lamp on the control unit.

- Energize an evaluation audible horn signal associated with the area


in which the detector was operated.
- Shut down the air conditioning system and/or close its damper.

- Actuate a time delay mechanism which shall delay release of the FM


200 for 30 seconds necessary for a warning alarm for a personnel to
evacuate before release of FM 200.

4. Discharge of the FM-200 shall:

- De-energize computer equipment and power to rooms indicated on


drawings.

5. The system shall be capable of being actuated by manual discharge


switches for each protected area. Operation of a manual discharge switch
shall override all time delay and short devices in the system.
6. The system shall include an emergency power back-up.

B. Material and Equipment:

1. General Requirements: Materials and equipment shall be standard products


of the manufacturer's latest design and suitable to perform the functions
intended.

2. Pipe: ASTM A 53 standard weight, Schedule 80, seamless Black steel pipe.

3. Fittings: ANSI/ASME B16.3; Class 300, Black Steel iron, threaded.

4. Discharge Nozzles: Manufacturer’s standard anodized aluminum nozzles


designed to complete discharge of agent in 10 seconds, or less, size as
shown on drawings. Nozzles shall be 360 degree pattern, UL listed, FM or
LPCB approved and provided with internal threads.

5. Signs: Instruction signs complying with NFPA shall be provided in order to


easily understand the function of all devices. All signs shall be
manufacturer’s standard durable plastic and backed with adhesive for easy
installation. Signs shall be installed at all entrances to the protected area
and near devices for which extra explanation is helpful or as required by the
Engineer.

C. Control and Supervisory Systems:

1. An electrical control unit shall be provided to perform the functions
necessary to operate the detection and FM 200 Fire Suppression System.

2. The control unit shall be housed in a wall-mounted, sheet metal enclosure


suitable for protecting electrical circuits. It shall be a NEMA Type 1 metal
cabinet with hinged, locked doors.

3. The control unit shall operate on voltage available on site, unless indicated
otherwise on drawings.

4. The FM-200 control unit shall control circuits to the detectors, time delays,
control heads, manual discharge switches, alarm horns and lights, pressure
switches and other required equipment. All such circuits shall be supervised
so that a visible and audible trouble signal occurs at the control unit should
a fault occur.

5. The control unit shall supervise all FM-200 storage containers against loss
of pressure. A pressure switch shall be located on each container and shall
cause a visible and audible "trouble" alarm signal to the panel.

6. The control unit shall supervise all circuitry for ground fault.

7. This system shall utilize a time delay of 30 seconds to delay the release of
the FM-200 after the control unit has received alarm signals from the
detection circuits. The time delay shall be of solid-state electronic design,
adjustable from 0 to 120 seconds. The timing circuit shall automatically reset
when it is interrupted and restart at the beginning of the cycle when the
interruption is removed.

8. Abort switches shall be provided to prevent FM-200 discharge if such


switches are actuated within the pre-discharge period.

9. Manual pull stations shall have a cast metal housing with release
configuration to prevent accidental system discharge.

10. The detectors shall be spaced, located, etc. in accordance with the
manufacturer's specifications. The smoke detector shall have a status
indicating LED for visual supervision. The sensitivity of the detector shall be
monitored without removal of the detector head.

11. The alarm bells shall operate on 24 volt polarized DC power.

12. The alarm horns shall operate on 24 volt polarized DC power.

13. All wiring shall be furnished and installed by the Contractor in accordance
with applicable rules of the National Electrical Code.

D. FM-200 Storage and Distribution:

1. Each protected area shall have its own separate supply of FM-200.

2. The FM-200 shall be stored in manufacturer’s standard welded steel


painted containers, UL listed, FM or LPCB approved and suitable for the

liquid clean agent having a natural vapor pressure of 458 kPa at 25 o C, and
super-pressurized with dry nitrogen to 2048 kPa. at 21 oC to provide a quick
and effective discharge in 10 seconds, or less. Each agent storage
container shall be suitable for refilling and shall be equipped with a
discharge valve assembly with fast acting rupture disc, safety plug,
overpressure relief, fill port, pressure gauge, low pressure supervisory
switch and liquid level indicator. Capacity of FM-200 storage containers
shall be as shown on the drawings.

3. Each storage container shall be secured in place by steel retaining brackets.

4. Discharge nozzles shall distribute the FM-200 throughout the protected


area.

5. All distribution piping shall be in accordance with the latest requirements


listed in NFPA. The piping shall be securely supported by UL listed hangers
with allowable for expansion and contraction.

6. All reductions in pipe size must be made by using reducing fittings, reducer
swaged nipples. Reducing bushings are not acceptable.

7. All pipe lengths must be reamed, blow clear and swabbed with suitable
solvents to remove burrs, mill varnish and cutting oil before assembly.

2.9 FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM FOR KITCHEN HOODS:

A. The fire suppression system shall be the dry chemical pre-engineered, piped, fixed
nozzle type. The system shall be suitable for ventilating hoods and cooking
appliances, and shall be specifically UL listed for the hazard and installed in
accordance with NFPA 96. The system shall actuate automatically by heat sensitive
detectors and shall also be provided with manual operation by strike push button.
The system shall be complete with all required equipments and accessories
including detectors, piping, fittings, nozzles, valves and chemical storage cylinder.
The contractor shall also be fully responsible for design and shop drawings for the
system and all shall be subject to approval of the Engineer; capacity of system shall
be as required.

2.10 PIPE HANGERS AND SUPPORTS:

2.11 FIRE PUMPS:

A. Refer to Section PUMPS.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION:

A. Installation shall be made in accordance with the applicable National Fire Protection
Association Standards. All equipment and devices used shall be listed in either the

UL Fire Protection List or the Factory Mutual Approval Guide.

B. Installation of the fire protection systems shall be made in strict accordance with
NFPA 12A, 70, 72A, 72E and 2001. The fire protection system shall be installed by
an experienced firm regularly engaged in the installation of fire extinguishing
systems; firm shall be subject to Engineer's approval. Installation shall also comply
with the requirements of Section BASIC PIPING MATERIALS AND METHODS.

C. Seal all pipe penetrations of fire barriers (walls and slabs) using fire barrier
penetration seals as specified in relevant Section of the Specifications or as
approved by the Engineer.

D. System Inspection and Checkouts:

1. After installation is complete the system shall be inspected by factory-


trained personnel in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended
procedures, in the presence of Engineer.

3.2 INSPECTION AND TESTING:

A. Tests shall demonstrate that entire system functions as intended. Tests shall be
carried out in accordance with applicable requirements of NFPA. Discharge tests
shall be conducted for each area; each area shall be tested separately. Piping
system shall be capped and subjected to minimum static water pressure of 1.5
times designed working pressure and maintained for two hours with no leaks or loss
of pressure. After performance test, complete the necessary adjustments and reset
the control and equipment.
